TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi says Iran will hold joint naval drills with Russia and China in the Indian Ocean later this month.

Khanzadi made the announcement in a meeting with visiting deputy chief of the Chinese Joint Staff Department, Major General Shao Yuanming, on Tuesday, saying the joint drills, code-named Maritime Security Belt, would be launched in the Indian Ocean on December 27th.

The two high-ranking military officials stressed the importance of cooperation between Iranian and Chinese armed forces as well as their effective role in maintaining regional and international security and peace.

“At the present time, the Iranian Army and the Iranian naval forces are resolute in their collaboration with China,” Khanzadi said. “Strategic goals have been defined at the level administrations, and at the level of armed forces, issues have been defined in the form of joint efforts.”

General Yuanming, for his part, praised Iran’s Navy as “an international and strategic force,” and said Beijing believed in a boost of bilateral ties between the two countries’ naval forces and called for a hands-on sharing of knowledge in the fields of education, technicalities and providing information.

The Chinese official also said the upcoming joint naval drills are a show of unity between Iran, China, and Russia.

In recent years, Iran’s Navy has increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.

It has also managed to foil several attacks on both Iranian and foreign tankers during its missions in international waters.

Navy chief Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi announced the mass production of the Jask cruise missile while visiting a navy exhibition showcasing a number of the force’s recent achievements on Saturday, Press TV reported.

Khanzadi said all of the force’s submarines will be equipped with the weapon and that the missile’s current range will be improved “substantially” in the future.

The commander added that the weapon, developed as part of the Jask-2 project, will allow the navy to hit targets across long ranges.

The missile “will surely be a serious surprise for the enemy,” he said.

Another project dubbed Jask-3 is also under development, Khanzadi said. The project will allow a wider variety of missile capabilities to be used in submarines, he added.

Also on Saturday, five other military projects and achievements, comprising the sea-launched Pelikan drone, the Sadaf-2 naval mine, the Soren positioning system, the Balaban guided bomb, and the Loqman training vessel, were also unveiled.

Among the unveiled projects, the Soren positioning system will allow Iranian submarines to obtain tracking information without using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology while operating discreetly underwater.

The Pelikan drone also incorporates four vertical-flight motors in order to allow the drone to take off and vertically on military vessels in order to perform maritime patrol operations from ships.

Rear Admiral Khanzadi said this first combat drone uses two jet engines that enable it to reach a speed of 1,000 km/h.

The UAV can also carry missiles with a range of 100 kilometers, the top commander added.

He noted that the half-size prototype of the drone has been built and successfully tested at the Iranian Ministry of Defense.

Rear Admiral Khanzadi went on to say that Sejjil can be launched from vessels and recovered by parachute.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.

Iranian officials have repeatedly underscored that the country will not hesitate to strengthen its military capabilities, which are entirely meant for defense and will be never subject to negotiations.

Back in February 2018, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei called for efforts to maintain and boost Iran’s defense capabilities, hitting back at the enemies for disputing the country’s missile program.

“Without a moment of hesitation, the country must move to acquire whatever is necessary for defense, even if the whole world is opposed to it,” Ayatollah Khamenei said at the time.

Construction of the heavy destroyer has been put on the agenda under a project dubbed “Negin” (gemstone), the rear admiral said.

The weight of the destroyer is expected to be between 5,000 and 7,000 tons, Khanzadi explained.

Iranian navy commander said the plans are that the warship will be used in long-running naval missions without any limitation.

According to Tasnim, the heaviest destroyers currently in service in the Navy are of the “Mowj-class” which weigh around 1,300 tons.

In December 2018, the homegrown Sahand destroyer and Qadeer submarine joined the Navy.

Sahand weighs 1,300 tons, is 96 meters in length, and can cruise at a speed of 25 knots. The destroyer is also equipped with various surface, subsurface and aerial weapons, and carries out radar jamming and deception operations.

Sahand is a stealth destroyer furnished with anti-submarine systems, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, point-defense weapon system, and anti-aircraft guns.

In naval terminology, a destroyer is a fast, maneuverable, long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against powerful short range attackers.

Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi announced earlier that Iran is designing a new naval destroyer, called Dena.

“The operations of installing VLS on Dena and Damavand destroyers are underway, and the systems will be tested in the near future,” Mehr quoted Khanzadi as saying.

Referring to remarks by Leader of the Islamic Revolution who has insisted on enhancing defense capabilities in all areas, including the strategic marine sector, the rear admiral said such developments will not be limited to Damavand and Dena.

“All Navy destroyers will be operating with installing VLS in the future.”

VLS is an advanced system for holding and firing missiles on mobile naval platforms, such as surface ships and submarines.

“The Navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Army is the protector of the country’s territorial integrity and its interests in the seas; therefore, we have so far dispatched 64 fleets to international waters to defend the country’s interests,” Khanzadi said earlier this month.

“In addition to the fleets that made occasional voyages to the region in the past, there are two fleets, 63 and 64, which have a permanent presence in the Red Sea all the way to Suez Canal to provide security for our shipping lines,” the Navy chief explained.

Back in October, an Iranian oil tanker, called the Sabiti oil tanker, came under attacks by two missiles fired from an unknown location in the Red Sea.

Commander of Iranian Army’s Navy Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi inaugurated the new headquarters in the southern Iranian city on Thursday. As news relate, Army’s Navy HQ moved to Bandar Abbas recently.

He said that the plan to move the Navy’s headquarters started some years ago with the guidance of the Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Khamenei so that the force would be closer to operational zones.

“A significant part of Navy HQ elements will be transferred [to Bandar Abbas] and the naval forces will be led with an increased focus,” he said.

Khanzadi said the fact that Army’s Navy HQ moved to south “will increase the speed of operations and will allow the Navy to have more focus on waters.”

He noted that the measure will have various cultural, social, and economic effects in the region and will turn into a great capacity for the people of Hormozgan province. Capacities of the Navy will be accessible to local people which is a great development, he said.

Currently, three buildings with an area of 26,432 square meters have been established as the headquarters of Navy in Bandar Abbas in an area as big as 8,500 ha.
