According to Pirouz Mousavi, the managing director of Iranian Oil Terminals Company (IOTC), the necessary infrastructures for such a growth are being prepared in the terminal.
Iran exported 800 million barrels of crude oil from Kharg Island terminal in south part of the country during the last Iranian calendar year 1396 (ended on March 20).
Due to its close distance to oilfield regions, its good offshore position and suitable depth for gigantic oil vessels berthing, Kharg Island oil terminal has been recognized as one of the country’s most suitable places for crude oil export and loading sites.
According to the official, Iran is currently exporting about 2.6 million bpd of crude oil and gas condensate, most of which is being shipped from Kharg terminal.

It has been some years since Kharg had been put out of commission due to the need for some vital repairs, he added.

Kharg is a stable and great carrier which is suitable for remote missions of the Navy, the commander said, adding, “certainly, if there is a mission in Atlantic Ocean, Kharg helicopter carrier will be the main option for deployment.”

Propulsion system and some underwater parts of Kharg were repaired and reconstructed by Iranian specialists, he highlighted, adding that England has the required technology for this but they didn’t provide Iran with any information or equipment in this regard.

The Khalq helicopter carrier, along with Sabalan destroyer, began its mission on Wednesday in the Aden Gulf, the northern Indian Ocean, and the Strait of Bhalbamand.

The ship is the largest of its kind in West Asia and named after Iran’s Kharg Island. Being 679.5 feet long, she was originally built in Britain by Swan Hunter 1976-1978.
