Iran Can Double Oil Exports From Kharg Island

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company says Iran has the potential to double the crude oil exports from Kharg Island in the southern part of the country.

In recent months, Iran’s oil exports have grown with the successive increases being recorded, which have been unprecedented in the last three years.

The increase is despite the harsh sanctions imposed on Iran by the White House.

Emphasizing the importance of repairing and renovating oil terminal facilities, Deputy Minister of Oil and the CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company, Mohsen Khojasteh-Mehr said: “If market conditions allow, the export capacity of crude oil from Kharg can be doubled.”

Khojasteh-Mehr visited Kharg island on Thursday and noted: “Kharg has been a symbol of the resistive economy in the country since the beginning of the Islamic Revolution, and the island has been attacked by the enemies for the number of days of holy defense, but with diligent efforts and the will of the people and staff, even one day of oil exports has not been halted.”

The official added: “With transformation and dynamism in Kharg island and the Oil Terminals Company, no matter how much, we will have the same transformation and dynamism in the country’s economy.

“If we want to transform the country’s economy, we must take necessary steps in Kharg both in industry and social responsibilities and welfare of the people and inhabitants of this island,” he added.

The Deputy Minister of Oil has stated that the purpose of the visit is to closely review the latest status of projects related to the Oil Terminals Company, the Offshore Oil Company and the Kharg Island Oil Terminal, adding: “Major repairs mainly include repairs of docks, oil and gas condensate storage tanks located and safety and fire extinguishing systems in Kharg, which should be considered.”

Iran to harness flare gas in Kharg Island

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has successfully implemented the national waste-to-energy project in Kharg Island to curb the associated petroleum gas (APG) or flare gas of the petroleum products in the Persian Gulf oil and gas fields.

According to the portal of Bushehr province Department of Environment, the project has been launched by the cooperation of the Kharg Petrochemical Company (KPC) and Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC).

The project is envisaged to harness and transfer 50 million cubic feet per day of the associate petroleum gas of flare to offshore facilities in Kharg Island.

According to reports, the project will reduce the gas flaring in the major Forouzan Oilfield in the Persian Gulf to zero. Close to 6.5 million cubic meters of gas is burnt off in flares in this field every day that will be soon transferred to Kharg Petrochemical Plant and Kharg NGL Plant.

Flaring is the burning of natural gas that cannot be processed or sold. Flaring of APG is an important safety measure at many oil and gas production sites, as it prevents industrial plant equipment from over-pressuring and exploding.

Highlighting the need and significance of zero flaring projects to ensure zero hydrocarbon discharge into the environment, experts say the flaring of gas contributes to climate change and impacts the environment through the emission of carbon dioxide, black carbon, and other pollutants.

It also wastes valuable energy resources that can be used for sustainable development in producing countries.

According to a World Bank report, thousands of gas flares at oil production sites around the world burn approximately 140 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually, causing more than 300 million tons of carbon dioxide to be emitted into the atmosphere.

IOOC to coop. with DoE to revive coral reefs in Kharg Island

According to IOOC, the pilot plan is aimed at restoration of coral reef habitats on the island.

Accordingly, some of the goals of the 3-year project include restoration of damaged coral reefs, the creation of new coral habitats, identifying and introducing a suitable indigenous method for coral habitat development and developing and testing successful and operational techniques for restoration of other coral reefs in other areas in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

IOOC, a subsidiary of the state-owned National Iranian Oil Company, is in charge of developing several major crude oil reservoirs in the Persian Gulf region, including Abouzar, Hendijan, Bahregansar, Reshadat, Soroush, Norouz and Doroud fields as well as collecting associated petroleum gases in Kharg Island and Bahregan oil region.
