TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi on Wednesday discussed issues of mutual interest with Deputy Defense Minister of Azerbaijan Major General Fouad Mohammadov.

During the meeting, Khanzadi said that Islamic Republic of Iran has joint cooperation councils with most of the countries and the number of commissions with the neighboring states as well as those outside the region is increasing, IRNA reported.

The more the communications, diplomatic shuttles and commissions hold successfully, the more both the region and the world will be more secure, he said.

Noting that face-to-face dialogues, especially between neighboring states, are very significant, he said, “Such interactions will help us know each other better and understand common interests and undivided interests and have more collective security.”

The geopolitical zone of North of the Islamic Republic of Iran, where the Caspian Sea is located, is the most important component for the proximity and interaction of neighboring naval forces, he said, adding that many talks have so far been held on the Caspian Sea between the governments and naval forces of five countries and good agreements have been made.

Contending that the Caspian Sea needs security, Khanzadi said that the security should be ensured collectively and naval forces of the five littoral states hold talks in a safe and secure ambiance.

Iran and Azerbaijan Republic navy forces boast of good capacities for cooperation, he said, noting that they can exchange students and run courses in Persian, Azeri and English languages.

Fouad Mohammadov, for his part, said that there are many areas of cooperation between the two countries’ naval forces.

He also invited Khanzadi to visit his country to help promote interaction between the two forces.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said Iran is seeking to stage joint naval drills in the Caspian Sea with regional countries, following the recent successful drill with Russia and China in the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman.

He made the remark on Iran plans to make up drills in Caspian Sea in a TV interview on Sunday night, while discussing the details of Iran’s joint naval drill with Russia and China in the northern part of the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman, dubbed as the “Marine Security Belt,” which wrapped up on Sunday.

“There is no threat facing the Persian Gulf region except for the presence of foreign forces such as the US, which are endangering the security of this region,” the Iranian Navy commander said.

He said the reason for holding the joint drill in the northern part of the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman was that this region was in need of more coordination for staging drills and providing security.

Khanzadi maintained that the three countries of Iran, Russia, and China have agreed to stage the joint naval drill every year.

“We are seeking to achieve collective security, and for that purpose, we are inviting regional countries to join us [in the drills],” he added.

Khanzadi also said the drill, which covered an area of 17,000 square kilometers this time, would expand to further areas for future exercises.

The Iranian commander then described the efforts of some countries to form a coalition in the Persian Gulf as “pointless” and a waste of resources, which was not well received by other countries.
