TEHRAN (Iran News) – Speaking to IRIB on Sunday mourning, Zarif said that Iran has been in talks with regional countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, and Turkey from the start of tensions in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

“We believe that the war will inflict most damages on regional countries and so these countries can have the most influence on ending the war. In this framework, and without any effort to compete with other mechanisms such as Minsk, we pursued these dialogues and aims,” added the minister.

“One of the important features of our plan is that it does not solely relate to a temporary ceasefire, rather it pursues moving towards solving the differences based on a framework that will start by both sides’ committing to some principles and then it will continue with other measures, especially withdrawal of occupying forces from all occupied territories,” he said.

“Ensuring people’s rights”, “establishing commuting paths”, and “regional countries’ monitoring over the process of implementing the peace plan” are among other aspects of Tehran’s initiative, according to Zarif.

He noted that Deputy FM Araghchi has offered the plan to Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, and Turkey and that Iran is now awaiting these countries’ response to it.

Zarif also reiterated that Iran will not tolerate the presence of terrorists near its borders.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Ali Akbar Velayati, an international adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, called on Armenia to withdraw its forces from the regions it has occupied in the Republic of Azerbaijan, but emphasized that such a process should take place politically, not militarily.

In an interview with Iranian daily Kayhan, Velayati commented on the latest flare-up of armed clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Pointing to the Armenian occupation of seven cities and the four UN resolutions calling for the withdrawal of Armenians from the occupied Azeri territories and their return to the internationally accepted boundaries, Velayati said all UN Member States must obey the resolutions.

“We call on Armenia to return those occupied parts to the Republic of Azerbaijan. More than one million Azeris have been displaced after the occupation of those areas and must return home soon,” he added.

The Leader’s adviser underlined that Iran takes the same stance on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that it has adopted on the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

Velayati made it clear that the dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan has no military solution whatsoever, and must be resolved politically.

Iran is opposed to any military action from any side, because people would be the only loser in the war, Velayati stated.

Deploring the recent attacks on residential areas amid the Nagorno-Karabakh war, the former Iranian foreign minister said this war runs counter to the interests of people of the two countries and to regional security.

Velayati further deplored the foreign parties, such as Israel and Turkey, for fanning the flames of war, adding, “Why is Turkey insisting on the continuation of war? This country (Turkey) must help end the war if it can do so, provided that the occupied cities of the Republic of Azerbaijan be liberated definitely.”

He also said that the illegitimate Zionist regime which is founded upon the occupation of Palestine has no right to comment on the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have exchanged heavy rocket and artillery fire, with each side accusing the other of targeting civilian areas as the fighting over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh intensified.

Dozens of soldiers and civilians have been killed in both countries in the new round of fighting.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani told the visiting Armenian MP Vahram Baghdasaryan in Tehran on Monday that Iran is resolute to solve the problem of Karabakh.

“Iran will spare no efforts to resolve the Karabakh crisis and we hope the issue be resolved very soon with peace and friendship,” said Ali Larijani, the Speaker of Iranian Parliament on Monday.

The top law-maker made the remarks during his meeting with Vahram Baghdasaryan, an MP from the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, also referred to as the Parliament of Armenia, who also heads the Parliamentary Friendship Group of Armenia-Iran.

“We believe that peace and dialogue are the best ways out of political conflicts, because currently the region is fed up with conflict and rift and more call for war is not in the interests of any country,” underlined the Iranian top legislator.

“When Iran makes friends with a country, it will stand up to its friendship till the end and Iran is not like some countries who suddenly turn their positions 180 degress, and it proved this quality in the case of Iraq and Syria which were hit by terrorists,” affirmed Mr. Larijani.

Mr. Baghdasaryan, for his part, said that political and economic relations with Iran are the top objectives of Armenia’s foreign policy agenda.

“Good political ties with Tehran is the objective of our foreign policy and we do our best to enhance bilateral ties to their utmost capacity,” asserted the Armenian legislator after describing Iran as one very good neighbors of Armenia.

“In all these years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has tried hard to keep a balanced and symmetrical policy toward the regional issues and the Karabakh crisis,” said the Arminian MP hailing the role of Iran in stabilizing the region.
