Russian Diplomat Informs of JCPOA Joint Commission Meeting

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov informed that JCPOA Joint Commission may meet in the near future but the meeting’s date will depend on the further easing of lockdown measures, including transport restrictions.

As Russian diplomat told TASS, the Joint Commission on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program is considering the possibility of holding an in-person meeting in the near future.

“An in-person meeting is possible, it is under consideration,” he pointed out. “No date has been set yet but it’s not a matter of distant future,” Ryabkov said.

He added the meeting’s date will depend on the further easing of lockdown measures, including transport restrictions.

The previous meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission, which involved political directors, took place in the Austrian capital of Vienna in February 2020.

In mid-July, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy also announced that the next meeting of the Joint Commission on Iran’s nuclear deal (JCPOA) will be scheduled as soon as travel conditions allow.

In light of travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has not been possible so far to convene a regular meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission.

All JCPOA participants reconfirmed their determination to preserve the agreement which is in the interest of all.

Ulyanov: Joint Commission Participants reaffirm commitment to JCPOA

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Referring to the JCPOA Joint Commission meeting in Vienna, Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said, “Participants reaffirmed their commitment to Iran nuclear deal as a key element of non-proliferation architecture.”

In a tweet on Wednesday, Ulyanov wrote, “Meeting of Joint Commission of JCPOA was held in the businesslike atmosphere. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to #IranDeal is a key element of non-proliferation architecture. Experts will further discuss nuclear implementation and economic issues.”

The Joint Commission was chaired on behalf of the EU High Representative Josep Borrell Fontelles by Helga Schmid and attended by representatives of China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Iran.

The meeting comes as the EU3 — the three European signatories to the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — accused Iran on January 14 of violating the terms of the accord and announced that they plan to trigger a dispute settlement mechanism that could eventually restore UN Security Council sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Iran started reducing commitments to the deal after the US withdrew from the agreement and reimposed sanctions on Iran.

The E3 also failed to safeguard Iran’s economic interests in the face of US sanctions.

Helga Schmid: ‘Crucial discussion’ on JCPOA underway

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Secretary-General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), Helga Schmid, says “crucial discussion” is being held among participants of the JCPOA Joint Commission meeting in Vienna on Wednesday.

“Joint Commission of the # JCPOA happening now, crucial discussion with participants on the way forward to preserve #Iran Deal,” Secretary-General of the European External Action Service (EEAS), Helga Schmid, wrote in a tweet on Wednesday.

Earlier, she had tweeted that participants had a “collective responsibility to preserve the #IranDeal.”

The Joint Commission is being chaired on behalf of the EU High Representative Josep Borrell Fontelles by Helga Schmid and attended by representatives of China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Iran.

Araghchi Visits Vienna for JCPOA Joint Commission

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for political affairs Abbas Araghchi arrived in Vienna late Tuesday to take part in the Joint Commission meeting of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The meeting is scheduled to be held in the Austrian capital on Wednesday (Feb. 26) at the level of the deputy ministers and directors-generals from Iran and the Group 4+1 (Germany, France, Britain, Russia, and China).

The meeting will be co-chaired by Iran’s Araghchi and Secretary-General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmidt.

According to Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi, the meeting is an ordinary session held once every three months and is not related to the E3’s dispute resolution mechanism.

Iran, remaining parties to JCPOA to hold expert-level meeting Tue.

Experts from Iranian foreign ministry and the foreign ministries of Britain, Germany, France, China and Russia will hold a JCPOA meeting in Brussels this Tuesday.

In this round of talks, the experts will discuss and exchange views on issues such as unilateral US sanctions, US refusal to extend sanctions waivers on Iranian oil, US refusal to extend sanctions waivers on nuclear-related cooperation, and economic cooperation using INSTEX trade mechanism.

The Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) is a special-purpose vehicle (SPV) established in January 2019 by France, Germany and the United Kingdom to facilitate non-dollar trade with Iran.

In a joint statement yesterday, Britian, Germany and France and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that the US decision not to extend sanctions exemptions on Iranian oil and nuclear cooperation was regrettable.

Araghchi departs for Vienna to attend JCPOA joint commission meeting

Co-chaired by Araghchi and European External Action Service Helga Schmid, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) joint commission meeting will be held in Vienna, Austria on Wednesday, with deputy foreign ministers of Germany, UK, France, Russia, and China in attendance.

According to reports, Araghchi will also hold separate meetings with some of his counterparts and also with Helga Schmid on Tuesday.

Iranian and other countries’ delegations have started expert meetings from Monday. The Wednesday session will be focused on ways to get around US unilateral sanctions against Iran, as well as solutions to implement remaining parties’ commitments.

The workgroup to implement lifting sanctions is scheduled to get underway in Vienna on Tuesday morning.

Director General of The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano said on Monday that Tehran is implementing all its commitments under JCPOA.

IAEA has always endorsed Iran’s adherence to its commitments after the inking of JCPOA in 2015, however, Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the deal and re-imposed harsh sanctions against the Iranian nation in May 2018.

Other signatories of the deal have vowed to keep it alive. After months of delay, European signatories, i.e. Germany, UK, and France established a financial mechanism dubbed as INSTEX (Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges) to facilitate trade ties with Iran and ditch US sanctions, however, the channel is yet to prove its true effectiveness. Meanwhile, Iran calls for the adoption of more practical measures by JCPOA signatories to safeguard Tehran’s interest.
