TEHRAN (Iran News) – Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi said on Sunday that Iran has completely implemented the fourth step of reducing its JCPOA commitments, a move made by Tehran to respond to Washington’s violations of the 2015 agreement.

The fourth step has been fully implemented, and accordingly, 1,044 centrifuges are enriching uranium at the Fordo nuclear site, Salehi said while addressing Iranian lawmakers in Parliament on Sunday, according to IRNA.

Under the nuclear deal, he said, Iran had promised that these 1,044 centrifuges will not enrich uranium, but according to the country’s decision to reduce its nuclear deal commitments to the 2015 deal, enrichment will be done as needed.

Earlier this year, the Iranian government announced its decision to take the fifth and final step in reducing its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal it signed with world powers, which is officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The Iranian government said on January 5 that from now on, the country will observe no operational limitations on its nuclear industry, including with regard to the capacity and level of uranium enrichment, the amount of enriched materials as well as research and development, Press TV wrote.

“By taking the fifth step in reducing its commitment, the Islamic Republic of Iran eliminates the last key operational restriction it faced under the JCPOA, which is the limitation imposed on the number of centrifuges,” it said.

The statement emphasized that following this decision, Iran will continue its nuclear program only on the basis of its “technical needs”.

The Iranian government, however, emphasized that it will continue to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as was the case in the past.

Iran has repeatedly said that it is ready to resume fulfilling its commitments under the landmark nuclear deal if sanctions imposed on the country are removed and it can avail itself of the JCPOA’s benefits.

US President Donald Trump, a stern critic of the historic deal, unilaterally pulled Washington out of the JCPOA in May 2018, and unleashed the “toughest ever” sanctions against the Islamic Republic in defiance of global criticism in an attempt to strangle the Iranian oil trade.

In response to the US unilateral move, Tehran has rowed back on its nuclear commitments five times in compliance with articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, but stressed that its retaliatory measures will be reversible as soon as Europe finds practical ways to shield the mutual trade from the US sanctions.

As a first step, Iran increased its enriched uranium stockpile to beyond the 300 kilograms set by the JCPOA.

In the second step, Tehran began enriching uranium to purity rates beyond the JCPOA limit of 3.76 percent.

In the third phase, after the Europeans failed to meet a 60-day deadline to meet Iran’s demands and fulfill their commitments under the deal, Iran started up advanced centrifuges to boost the country’s stockpile of enriched uranium and activated 20 IR-4 and 20 IR-6 centrifuges for research and development purposes.

In November, Iran began injecting gas into centrifuges at the Fordo plant as part of its fourth step away from the JCPOA under the supervision of the IAEA.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has announced the measures to be taken as part of Iran’s 4th step of reducing commitments to the nuclear deal (JCPOA).

“We will take the fourth step in reducing commitments to the JCPOA (tomorrow) and I will declare the directives to the Atomic Energy Organization today,” said President Rouhani on Tuesday, during the inauguration ceremony of Azadi Innovation Factory, a venue for the gathering of startups.

“The 4th step of reducing commitments includes obligations regarding the Fordow enrichment facility,” Rouhani said.

“Under the JCPOA, we were inquired to have up to 1,044 centrifuges at Fordow, which were supposed to remain without gas. Starting tomorrow, we will start injecting gas into the centrifuges at Fordow as part of the fourth JCPOA step,” the president added.

“To all the remaining sides to the JCPOA and other friendly countries, I’d like to state in advance that our new measures will be taken under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” said Rouhani.

“Also, all measures in the fourth step are reversible just like in the previous steps; that is, the moment the other sides to the agreement begin to live up to their commitments, we will resume our own suspended commitments as well,” he added.

“Some countries made efforts to reach positive results before the fourth deadline ran out, but we have no other choice but to take the fourth step starting tomorrow,” Rouhani said.

He went on to stress, however, that “there is time for negotiations for the next two months. If we reached a proper solution for the removal of sanctions on our export of oil and metal, if we could easily use our money in trade transactions, then we would be fully ready to return to the previous conditions [regarding the level of our JCPOA commitments.”

“Europeans have not been successful to meet their JCPOA commitments and have tied all of their decisions and measure to Trump’s confirmation,” he said, adding, “Iran has its own plan and its own predictions and if the Europeans remain impotent, Iran will take the fourth step.”

Referring to President Rouhani’ HOPE initiative (Hormuz Peace Endeavor), he said “what President Rouhani and FM Zarif presented, about HOPE at recent UNGA, was just an overview of the formulated initiative and the full version of the plan will be submitted to Persian Gulf littoral states in near future.”

“The initiative will be implemented with the participation of regional countries and supervision of the UN,” Mousavi said.

A year after the US’ unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA, and in the face of EU’s lack of practical measures to protect Iran’s economy and trade ties against the US sanctions, Tehran announced its decision to row back on its nuclear commitments in compliance with articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA.

Iran says its measures will be reversible as soon as Europe finds practical ways to shield the Iranian economy from unilateral US sanctions.

Tehran (Iran News) – Ali Akbar Salehi announced on Monday that the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) will start launching the second part of the Arak heavy-water nuclear reactor “within one or two weeks”.

Salehi, the vice president and the AEOI chief, broke the story of launching the second part of the Arak reactor in a meeting with members of the Parliament Education and Research Committee, the IRIB reported.

The announcement by Salehi falls within Iran’s strategy to partially remove limits on its nuclear activities in retaliation for the revocation of the multilateral nuclear deal by the Trump administration and a failure by the Europeans to honor their obligation to compensate Iran for the sanctions effects.

Salehi also said the stockpile of Iran’s nuclear fuel enriched above 3.5 percent has gone up highly so that every day 5-6 kilograms are added to the stockpile.

“This means that we have reached to the pre-JCPOA era,” stated Salehi, a nuclear physicist.

Under the 2015 nuclear accord, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran was allowed to just keep 300 kilograms of nuclear fuel enriched to 3.67 percent.

The nuclear chief also said by next month his organization will add 2,500 SWU (separative work unit) to its current 5,060 SWU and “this means that our enrichment capacity will increase by 40 percent.”
