Iran’s IKA reports major rise in Istanbul route flights after EU sanctions

TEHRAN (Iran News) As many as 74,111 passengers traveled between Tehran and Istanbul from October 15-29, IRNA reported Chalandari as saying on Saturday.

After the sanctions, only 10 Iranian airlines flew to or from Istanbul, he said.

To meet the needs of Iranians, flights to Istanbul and Dubai were put on the agenda through coordination with the relevant authorities, he said.

Regarding other destinations, 171,148 Iranian passengers were transported by 1,130 flights after the sanctions, he noted.

The sanctions have caused financial and time losses for Iranians intending to travel to Europe and vice versa, resulting in the need for two flights to travel to Europe instead of one direct flight, he further noted.

Iran’s Human Rights Secretary has condemned the EU’s recent sanctions on three Iranian passenger airlines, calling them a violation of international law and an infringement on Iranian citizens’ rights.

TEHRAN (Iran News) Khaled Mashal, the group’s political leader abroad, made the remarks in Istanbul, Turkey during a mourning ceremony held in honor of Sinwar, who was recently assassinated by the regime in the Gaza Strip.

“Sinwar kicked up a storm against the Zionist regime and afflicted it with a great earthquake that will lead to its destruction,” he said.

The enemy sought to face Sinwar with an unfavorable fate, Mashal added, but God realized a respectable destiny for him and he led a brave existence and died honorably.

He also asserted that the Palestinian resistance would continue to confront Israeli atrocities and would welcome whatever approach that ensures realization of the Palestinian people’s rights and leads to cessation of the aggression.

Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’s Political Bureau’s deputy chief, confirmed Sinwar’s martyrdom in a statement last Friday, noting that the group’s former political leader was assassinated during the Israeli regime’s war of genocide against the Gaza Strip, which has been going on for more than a year.

‘Resistance remains resilient’

Osama Hamdan, Hamas’s representative in Lebanon, asserted that Sinwar’s martyrdom had failed to weaken the resistance as shown by a recent operation that was carried out by al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing, against Israeli forces in the city of Jabalia in northern Gaza.

The operation saw resistance fighters conducting an ambush against the forces that resulted in the death of a colonel leading the Israeli military’s 401st Armored Brigade and seriously wounded the deputy commander and an officer of the 52nd Battalion, a subdivision of the brigade.

Hamdan hailed Sinwar for his efforts at stopping the aggression against Gaza without compromising the rights of the coastal sliver’s people.

“The heroic personality of leader Sinwar pushed him to resist the occupation from the frontlines,” he said.

Hamdan also asserted that “our resistant people in northern Gaza will [continue to] foil the plan of the new Nazi generals from the occupation leaders.”

He was referring to a week-long campaign that has been led by the regime against the northern areas, which is aimed at tightening the regime’s siege against the areas, cutting off humanitarian aid to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians inside, and labeling those who remain there as combatants so it could target and kill them after declaring the areas a “closed military zone.”

Under the pandemic, Qatarairways has been in charge of doing indirect flights from Tehran to Doha and Istanbul.

Flights between Iran and Turkey were temporarily suspended as of nearly three months ago from the closure of borders.

In early March, based on the coordination between Iran and Turkey, two special flights were conducted from Turkish city to Tehran to bring home the Iranian visitors stranded in Turkey.

The two countries are considering reopening borders and resuming the flights which have been suspended since March over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Sunday left for Turkey’s Istanbul for talks on bilateral relations and international issues.

The team arrived in Istanbul on Monday night and started the first training session on Tuesday morning.

According to reports, the team will also hold two friendly matches during its stay in the neighboring country.

Esteghlal is preparing for the 19th Persian Gulf Pro League. The last time that the Blues gained the event’s title, goes back to 2012-2013 season.

The team finished the previous season at the third place and in order to advance to 2020 AFC Champions League, it has to hold matches with still undetermined rivals at the preliminary round.

Esteghlal signed the 43-year-old Italian coach Andrea Stramaccioni in early June along with some other players from Iran. The team is seeking to further boost its attacking style by hiring international forwards as current reports link it with Malian forward Cheick Tidiane Diabaté.

Speaking to reporters in the capital Ankara on the results of Sunday’s local elections, High Election Board Chairman Sadi Guven said CHP candidate Ekrem Imamoglu is leading with 4,159,650 votes over AK Party’s Binali Yildirim with 4,131,761.

Guven added: “So far results coming from 31,102 ballot boxes have been defined in our system, count of 84 ballot box results have not been completed because of objections.”

Meanwhile, state-run Anadolu Agency has started posting election data at noon on Monday after hours of break. Anadolu’s data shows Imamoglu leads in the Istanbul mayoral race with 48.8 percent of the votes as Yildirim stands at 48.5 percent.

Sezgin Tanrikulu, a senior CHP MP from Istanbul, said that his party expected the board to declare victory later in the day.

“We have won the election in Istanbul with around 28,000 votes. For legal reasons, the board is waiting for the objection period to be over to declare our win,” Tanrikulu, who is also a lawyer, told Al Jazeera.

“There have been complaints about certain ballot boxes. Legally, the party objecting should show a valid reason in doing so over each partucular ballot box. Therefore, the number of boxes votes will be recounted in is limited,” he also said.

“The government should respect the results.”

The legal objection period to the board is set to end at 3pm (12:00 GMT) on Tuesday.

In the lead up to Sadi Guven’s statement, both Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s AK Party and the CHP said they narrowly won Istanbul’s mayoral elections.

The AK Party’s Binali Yildirim claimed early on Monday that he had won the race by around 4,000 votes, while Imamoglu said he grabbed the mayorship with about 28,000 votes over Yildirim.

If the AK Party officially loses in Istanbul, it means that the three largest cities of Turkey will have mayors from the main opposition party, according to preliminary results.

In Ankara, unofficial results showed that CHP candidate Mansur Yavas had garnered 50.9 percent, with 99 percent of the votes counted. He was followed by Mehmet Ozhaseki, the AK Party nominee, in the capital, with 47.2 percent.

In the third-largest city, Izmir, the Nation Alliance candidate Mustafa Tunc Soyer was in the lead with 58 percent. Nihat Zeybekci, the candidate for Erdogan’s bloc, had 38.5 percent. Ninety-nine percent of the votes have been counted.

Erdogan vows economic reforms

The polls posed a major challenge for Erdogan, given a backdrop of high inflation and rising unemployment sparked by a major currency crisis last year.

Speaking at a news conference in Istanbul, Erdogan on Sunday acknowledged that his party had lost control in a number of cities and pledged that he would focus on carrying out economic reforms.

Erdogan, who was elected last year as the country’s first executive president, said the next polls would be held in June 2023, adding that Turkey would carefully implement a “strong economic programme” without compromising on free-market rules.

Murat Yetkin, a Turkish political analyst, told Al Jazeera that if “the Erdogan-led AK Party-MHP alliance loses Istanbul [along with Ankara] as well, that means loss of control over five major cities in Turkey.”

“Even if Istanbul, with 11 million voters, is won with a few thousand votes, it will be perceived as a major loss,” he said.

“The results also show that the executive presidential system, which was designed to avoid coalitions, has led to a de facto coalition since the AK Party cannot maintain [a] majority without its symbiotic partnership with MHP.”

Ozgur Dilber, a CHP volunteer, said the results showed that the AK Party’s popularity was waning – even if Erdogan’s bloc won in Istanbul.

“To me, the results are a proof that the number of voters who want change is increasing,” he told Al Jazeera outside the party’s election monitoring office late on Sunday.

Focus on economy, security

Earlier this month, official statistics showed that in the last two quarters of 2018, the Turkish economy slipped into its first recession in a decade, as inflation and interest rates soared due to the currency meltdown.

In February, inflation stood at just under 20 percent, while the Central Bank’s main interest rate is currently 24 percent.

In the lead-up to Sunday’s vote, the People’s Alliance sought to link the local polls to internal and external risks threatening the country’s security.

Erdogan has often blamed foreign powers and “speculators” for the currency fluctuations and other economic woes faced by Turkey – a message he repeated this week.

For its part, the main opposition alliance has focused its campaign on the economic situation and its effect on citizens.

It also used Turkish flags in their campaigns, rather than party banners, in an apparent bid to attract voters from different backgrounds.

A source indicated during briefing on the investigation into the killing of Jamal Khashoggi that “I can’t breathe” were the final words uttered by the Washington Post columnist after he was set upon by a Saudi hit squad at the country’s consulate in Istanbul.

The source, who has read a translated transcript of an audio recording of Khashoggi’s painful last moments, said it was clear that the killing on October 2 was no botched rendition attempt, but the execution of a premeditated plan to murder the journalist, CNN reported.

During the course of the gruesome scene, the source describes Khashoggi struggling against a group of people determined to kill him.

“I can’t breathe,” Khashoggi says.

The transcript notes the sounds of Khashoggi’s body being dismembered by a saw, as the alleged perpetrators are advised to listen to music to block out the sound.

And, according to the source, the transcript suggests that a series of phone calls are made, briefing them on progress. Turkish officials believe the calls were made to senior figures in Riyadh.

Some of the details in the transcript seen by CNN’s source have emerged in previous reports of the recording’s content. But this is the fullest account of the transcript that has so far been published.

It is likely to increase pressure on the Trump administration, which has been determined to separate Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman from the murder, and sought to frame the issue as a binary choice between supporting or cutting off a key partner in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump has been at odds with the CIA, which, sources say, has concluded bin Salman personally ordered the killing.

The revelations also threaten to undermine a key plank of an initial Saudi explanation for Khashoggi’s death, that it was a rogue operation that went horribly wrong.

The original transcript of the audio was prepared by Turkish intelligence services. Turkish officials have never said how they obtained the audio. The transcript would have been translated before it was shared with other intelligence services; CNN’s source read a translated version and has been briefed on the investigation.

The office of one US senator, who has received a briefing on the investigation by CIA Director Gina Haspel, told CNN that the source’s recollections of the transcript are “consistent” with that briefing.

CNN asked Saudi officials to comment on the contents of the transcript as described by the source, and to provide comment from those named in it. A Saudi official said: “The relevant Saudi security officials have reviewed the transcript and tape materials through Turkish security channels and nowhere in them is there any reference or indication of a call being made.”

“If there is additional information Turkish authorities have that we are unaware of, we would welcome it being officially handed over to us for review, which we have requested numerous times and are still requesting. And, up until now; we have not received anything.” The official did not address the transcript’s characterization of the scene inside the Saudi consulate, nor Khashoggi’s last words.

‘You are coming back’

The transcript begins at the moment Khashoggi enters the Saudi consulate in a quiet residential district of Istanbul at lunchtime on October 2.

Khashoggi thought he had made a routine appointment to pick up papers that would allow him to marry his Turkish fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. But, according to the source, it dawns upon Khashoggi almost immediately that things are not going to plan, when he recognizes one of the men who meets him.

He asks the man what he is doing there.

According to CNN’s source, a voice identified in the transcript as Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, a former Saudi diplomat and intelligence official working for bin Salman, and known to Khashoggi from their time together at the Saudi Embassy in London, addresses him.

“You are coming back,” the man says.

“You can’t do that,” Khashoggi replies. “People are waiting outside.”

(Khashoggi’s fiancée accompanied him as far as the consulate, with instructions to call associates if he did not emerge.)

Without any further dialogue, according to the source, the transcript indicates that several people set upon Khashoggi.

Noises follow, and very quickly Khashoggi is fighting for air.

In one version of the evolving explanations for his death, Saudi officials suggested Khashoggi was accidentally choked. But according to the transcript, CNN’s source says, the journalist’s voice can be heard above the noise, repeatedly claiming he could not breathe.

Despite his desperate pleas, the last discernible words the transcript records for Khashoggi are:

“I can’t breathe.”

The transcript notes more noises, and several more voices.

One of those voices is identified on the transcript by Turkish authorities as belonging to Dr. Salah Muhammad al-Tubaiqi, the head of forensic medicine at Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry, the source says.

Aside from Khashoggi and Mutreb, he is the only other voice identified by name on the transcript.

As the transcript continues, it is clear Khashoggi is not yet dead.

The transcript notes the noises that can be heard on the tape, almost in the manner that subtitles describe moments in movies where there is no dialogue.

“Scream.”

“Scream.”

“Gasping.”

Then, the transcript notes other descriptions.

“Saw.”

“Cutting.”

Tubaiqi is noted giving some advice to other people in the room, apparently to help them deal with the appalling task.

“Put your earphones in, or listen to music like me.”

During the scene, the transcript notes at least three phone calls placed by Mutreb.

The transcript does not specify the moment Khashoggi dies.

According to the source, the transcript suggests Mutreb is updating someone, whom Turkish officials say was in Riyadh, with almost step-by-step details of what is taking place.

“Tell yours, the thing is done, it’s done.”

The word “yours” is taken by CNN’s source to refer to a superior, or boss.

The transcript has been circulated to key Turkish and Saudi allies, including those in Europe, but only the United States and Saudi Arabia have received the recording itself, the source believes.

The working assumption among those allies is that Mutreb was talking to Saud al-Qahtani, bin Salman’s closest aide, the source said. Saudi officials say al-Qahtani has been removed from his former position as media chief to the crown prince.

The transcript only records Mutreb’s side of the conversation. Without a recording of that call, or more details of which number was called, further conclusions based on the transcript alone cannot be made.

A source close to the Saudi investigation into Khashoggi’s killing told CNN that Mutreb and Tubaiqi deny making any phone calls.

Turkish surveillance video records the 15-man hit team arriving at the consulate shortly before Khashoggi, and departing a few hours later. A body double of Khashoggi dressed in Khashoggi’s clothes is seen on CCTV leaving by the back door.

It is clear from the transcript of the phone conversation that the calls do not describe a terrible situation gone awry, or explain an unexpected set of circumstances, the source says. Instead, the caller appears simply to be informing someone of what is going on. Hardly, the source says, the actions of a panicked ringleader, but more the description of a situation going entirely according to plan.

The transcript is relatively short, given the time span it describes, the source told CNN. There is not much dialogue; certainly no hint of a conversation about why Khashoggi should go “back,” and no suggestion either, as advanced at one point by Saudi officials, that he had been drugged by the hit team.

There is nothing in this transcript that the source could describe as a “smoking gun” — a snippet of conversation or phone call that directly ties bin Salman to the so-called hit team, and to Khashoggi’s murder.

But the lasting conclusion the source drew from the transcript is that Khashoggi’s killing was a planned assassination by an organized team that carried out its job with ruthless efficiency, keeping someone in Riyadh informed at each step.

While the transcript provides no smoking gun directly tying Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the killing, it seems to echo Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sentiments after hearing the CIA’s assessment of Khashoggi’s killing.

Graham, who was among a group of senators to receive a classified briefing on the Khashoggi case, said earlier this week that he agreed with the conclusions of the US security services that bin Salman was implicated in the case.

“There’s not a smoking gun, there’s a smoking saw,” he said.
