TEHRAN – Bangladesh has called for a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to discuss the human rights issue of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

Recently, Bangladesh had sent a notice along with Saudi Arabia to the UNHRC in this regard, Dhaka Tribune has reported.

Their notice has received support of 33 of the 47 member states, and 40 other non-UNHRC nations, The Asian News International (ANI) reported.

The move comes just over a week after Sheikh Hasina-led government signed a bilateral agreement with Myanmar on Rohingya repatriation.

According to the national daily, Bangladesh also wants to discuss the human rights condition of other minorities living in Myanmar’s Rakhine state with the UNHCR members.

Since the military action began in Rakhine in August, after some militants attacked security forces’ post, over 6 lakh Rohingyas have fled the state to neighboring countries, especially to Bangladesh.

As of now, 6.25 lakh refugees have taken shelter in the country.

According to Myanmar’s 1982 Citizenship Act, Rohingyas are not considered naturalized citizens and, repeatedly, have been at the receiving end of the ethnic clashes in the country.

Head of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi held talks on bilateral and regional issues with Turkish Parliamentary National Defense Committee head Yusuf Beyazıt in Tehran on Monday.

Boroujerdi voiced concern over the current situation in the Iraqi Kurdistan region, highlighting Iran’s principled policy on defending the territorial integrity of Iraq; “Iran and Turkey need to use every single capacity to resolve this issue as soon as possible, because preserving the territorial integrity of regional countries is a highly significant principle.”

Boroujerdi then discussed US president’s remarks on the Iran’s nuclear deal, saying “Donald Trump’s remarks once again proved that the American government cannot be trusted.”

“Washington’s treatment of the nuclear deal encourages the views of countries such as North Korea,” he stressed.

Yusuf Beyazıt, who also heads Turkey-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group, noted the two countries’ common stances on issues related to Iraq, Syria and Palestine, adding “KRG moves will no doubt cause problems for Iran and Turkey. It is clear that the US and Israeli regime are behind the Kurdistan region’s move for splitting from Iraq.”

He went on to stress that Turkey’s reaction toward KRG issue would be “decisive”.

Beyazıt further voiced his country’s support for the Iran nuclear deal, and the interest in keeping the borders of the two countries open full-time, increasing economic exchanges and expanding political relations, providing finance and facilitating banking cooperation.

“We are hoping that the level of trade transactions between the two countries will reach the $30 billion that was determined during President Rouhani’s visit to Turkey,” he added.

Iranian Navy’s Falakhen missile boat, while saving an Iranian fishing vessel which was sinking in Persian Gulf waters due to a technical issue with the engine, issued a warning message to a US Navy ship.

According to the Navy’s Public Relations Department, a fishing boat named Shams, which was stationed 45 miles from the coast of Jask port for an engine test, was hit by technical breakdown as sought help from the Iranian Army’s Navy. Upon receiving a request for assistance from troubled vessel, the 2nd Velayat Naval Region deployed Falakhen missile boat for rescue operations in order to prevent further injuries to the fishing ship.

It is worth noting that, in the course of the rescue operation, a U.S. Navy ship which was approaching the position of the fishing boat, received warning from Falakhen and was forced to leave the area.
