TEHRAN (Iran News) – At least 75,000 Palestinians have been displaced due to the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza, the UN announced on Thursday.

“Overall the situation remains alarming,” Jens Laerke, Spokesman for UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told Anadolu news agency.

“Hostilities between Israeli forces and armed groups in Gaza continued for the ninth day yesterday, but at a lesser intensity. On the other hand, clashes between Palestinians and Israeli forces across the West Bank, including in East Jerusalem, intensified,” he said.

“All parties to the fighting must agree to a humanitarian pause until a ceasefire is reached, to ensure access into and out of Gaza for humanitarian staff and critical goods, and allow for safe emergency relief distribution inside Gaza,” he added.

At least 230 Palestinians have been killed, including 65 children, and 1,700 others injured in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since May 10, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Health centers, media offices and residential neighborhoods have been targeted.

OCHA said that the total casualties in the West Bank as of May 19 were 25 deaths, including four children, and 6,309 injuries. The total casualties in Israel as of May 19 were 12 deaths, and 796 injuries.

OCHA added that the cumulative number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) since May 10 is 75,000, including 47,000 seeking protection in 58 United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) schools across Gaza.

Some 28,700 displaced people are staying with host families.

On Tuesday, OCHA announced that given the limited fuel reserves, Gaza’s sole power plant operates on only two of its four turbines, resulting in rolling daily power cuts of 8-12 hours.

The North Gaza Seawater Desalination Plant is still not operational, affecting an estimated 250,000 people’s access to clean drinking water.

Another 230,000 people from Gaza City and Khan Younis have limited access to piped water due to increasing power cuts and networks damage.

Around 700 meters of wastewater networks in Beit Lahia, Gaza City and Khan Younis were damaged, resulting in wastewater flows in the streets.

In addition, all fishing activity remains prohibited off the Gaza coast.

Recent tensions that started in East Jerusalem during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan spread to Gaza due to Israeli assaults on worshippers in the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

Israel’s assassination of a senior Palestinian resistance commander has opened the floodgates of reactions to Israel firing Gaza, with Palestinians and their allies warning of strong repercussions and Israel-friendly parties sufficing to voice “concern” about the escalation.

Baha Abu al-Ata, 42, the commander of Al-Quds Brigades — the Palestinian resistance movement of Islamic Jihad’s military wing — and his wife were martyred during an Israeli aerial assault against their home in Gaza City in the blockaded Gaza Strip on Tuesday. Iran News covers the reactions to Israel firing Gaza.

The Israeli army confirmed the airstrike afterward, saying it had taken place against Gaza’s Shejaiya area. The operation, it added, had been recommended by the Chief of Staff and the Shin Bet domestic security service and approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Iran: Israeli war criminals must be punished

Iran on Tuesday robustly condemned Israel’s assassination of Ata, urging legal action against Israeli “war criminals” responsible for such an act of terror.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi said “the occupiers of Palestine have to be subjected to legal proceedings and punishment at international tribunals as war criminals” over the assassination.

The Iranian official denounced the silence and inaction of international organizations and circles in the face of the Israeli regime’s acts of aggression and terrorism.

“Unfortunately, on the back of the support lent to this bloodthirsty and infanticidal regime, crimes and assassinations against the Palestinian people and fighters have continued both inside and outside the occupied territories.”

Moussavi was apparently referring to the unconditioned backing provided to Israel by its closest ally the United States — which routinely casts its veto against the United Nations’ resolutions issued against the regime — as well as other instances of support given to Tel Aviv by its other allies.

The spokesman urged regional and international bodies to act on their humanitarian and legal responsibility by throwing their weight behind the defenseless and oppressed people of Palestine and helping stop Israel’s acts of terror.

He also hailed the Palestinian people’s “legitimate and heroic” struggle and considered unity and resistance to being the only choices they can adopt in the face of the Israeli usurpers.

Ramallah slams Israel’s ‘heinous crime’

Meanwhile, the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority condemned Ata’s assassination as a “hideous crime” in a statement published on the official Palestinian News Agency WAFA.

The Authority “called on the international community to provide protection for the Palestinian people everywhere.”

Two more Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli military renews its air raids against the besieged coastal enclave for the second day of firing Gaza, prompting retaliatory rocket fire into the occupied territories.

Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamist Jihad movement, said on Wednesday that a member of the resistance group, Khalid Mavaz, 38, had lost his life in an Israeli airstrike on the second day of firing Gaza. Iran News quotes the report.

The Israeli military said its forces targeted Mavaz as he was preparing to launch rockets into the Israeli-occupied territories, a day after the regime assassinated senior Islamic Jihad commander Baha Abu al-Ata, along with his wife, in a targeted strike.

On the second day of firing Gaza, Another Palestinian also lost his life in the raids, according to the health ministry in the blockaded enclave, bringing the death toll from the regime’s assaults from Tuesday morning to 12.

According to the latest figures by the Gaza Health Ministry, the Israeli raids have left a total of 45 people injured, including 23 children.

Ata’s assassination sparked Palestinian retaliatory attacks, with Israeli military sources saying more than 200 rockets have been fired from Gaza into the occupied territories on Tuesday.

Israel’s national emergency service said it had treated 46 Israelis since the Gaza rocket fire began.

‘Israel initiated confrontation, but can’t determine its end’

Speaking on Tuesday evening, a spokesman for the al-Quds Brigades warned of further rocket fire from Gaza, stressing that Israel is not the side to determine how the current round of fighting in the blockaded enclave would end.

“We hold the enemy fully responsible for the consequences of its stupid decision to assassinate the leadership of the resistance,” Abu Hamza said. “The coming hours will add a new headline to the record of defeats of the enemy’s rash prime minister, who has only brought the Zionists destruction and war.”

“We tell the enemy: Perhaps you succeeded in starting this aggression against our people and resistance, but you will not be able to determine when it ends. The coming hours will record a victory for our people. While you started the battle, you will not be able to know when it will end,” he added.

Muslim states slam Israel

The Israeli attacks have sparked a wave of condemnations from Muslim countries and international organizations.

On Tuesday, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned the Israeli aggression against Gaza, saying it constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law conventions.

The 57-member Jeddah-based organization also held Israel accountable for the consequences of the dangerous Gaza escalation and called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards providing international protection for the Palestinian people.

Similarly, the Arab League held the Tel Aviv regime responsible for the “horrific crime” it had committed in Gaza and its consequences, adding that Tuesday’s raid comes in continuation of acts of aggression by the Israeli occupation against the Palestinians.

“This comes in the context of exposed Israeli attempts to let the Palestinian people pay the price of the predicaments and agendas of Israeli parties,” the 22-member pan-Arab body said in a statement.

Israel, the Arab League noted, wants to push the Gaza situation to further deterioration, drag the region into violence and threaten international peace and security.

The Arab League further called for international intervention to stop the Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people and provide them with protection.

Additionally, Jordan denounced the Israeli airstrikes and urged the international community to promptly act in order to stop the regime’s aggression on the besieged coastal sliver.

The Jordan news agency, Petra quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Daifallah al-Fayez as saying that “the Israeli escalation against the Gaza Strip and targeting of innocent civilians will only increase tension and violence, deepen despair and promote extremist agendas in the region, and will not lead to any solutions.”

“The solution to the problem in the Gaza Strip lies in finding a real political horizon through returning to the negotiating table between Israel and Palestine, lifting the unjust blockade on the enclave, promptly addressing the humanitarian needs there and respecting the international law,” he added.

The Israeli strike in Damascus hit the home of Akram al-Ajouri, killing his son and another person.
