TEHRAN (Iran News) – Production of iron ore pellet in Iran increased by 23 percent in the first nine months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-December 21, 2021), as compared to the same period of time in the past year, Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) announced.

IMIDRO said that more than 28.649 million tons of iron ore pellets were produced in the first nine months of the current Iranian calendar year, while the figure was 23.285 million in the same time span of the previous year.

Also, the iron ore pellet production rose 17 percent to 3.026 million tons in the ninth month of this year, from that of the previous year, which was 2.597 million tons.

As reported, Golgohar was the largest producer of pellets during the nine-month period with 9.346 million tons of production, followed by MIDHCO with 4.434 million tons, and Sangan with 3.268 million tons.

The data released by IMIDRO indicate that iron ore pellet production by major Iranian mining companies exceeded 46 million tons in the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20, 2021), registering a 10 percent growth year on year.

The mentioned companies had managed to produce 41.7 million tons of pellets in the preceding year.

According to the data, Golgohar was the largest producer of pellets in the said year with 12.2 million tons of production, followed by Mobarakeh Steel Company with 7.3 million tons, MIDHCO with 6.2 million tons, and Khouzestan Steel Company with 5.5 million tons.

Iran’s iron ore pellet production capacity exceeded 66 million tons in the previous Iranian calendar year.

IMIDRO’s report on under-construction iron ore pellet production units in Iran indicates that a total of 25.92 million tons are expected to be added to Iran’s iron ore pellet production capacity by the time these units are completed in the fiscal year 1402 (2023-24).

Production of iron ore concentrate also reached 49.714 million tons during the previous calendar year to register a five-percent rise year on year.

According to the Industry, Mining and Trade Ministry data, of the mentioned figure 3.533 million tons were produced in the last month of the previous year (February 19-March 20).

As reported, the country’s major iron ore concentrate producers had managed to produce about 47.306 million tons of the mentioned product in the Iranian calendar year 1398.

Last year, major mining companies also produced 902,454 tons of granulated iron ore, to register a decrease of 54 percent compared to the preceding year (1,965,733 tons).

In its outlook plan for the Iranian calendar year 1404 (2025-2026) Iran has envisaged production of 55 million tons of steel per annum, and to achieve this target the country requires to extract 160 million tons of iron ore.

In a bid to prevent the exports of unprocessed minerals, creating more value-added and meeting the requirements of domestic producers for the raw materials, Iran has levied a 25-percent duty on the exports of raw minerals (especially iron ore) since September 2019.

The duty is aimed at encouraging the production of more processed minerals such as pellets and concentrate instead of selling the raw minerals.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Mines and Metals Company (MME) has established China’s first gas-based sponge iron production unit using the Persian Direct Reduction (PERED) technology, the portal of the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) reported.

As the world’s first manufacturer of gas-based sponge iron, Iran is now transferring the technology to the world’s biggest steel producer.

The deal for the construction of the first gas-based sponge iron plant was concluded between China’s CSTM Company and MME Company from Iran as the license owner of PERED technology.

With a capacity of 300,000 tons, the plant has been launched in China’s Taiyuan city.

PERED is a new technology for producing sponge iron using natural gas as fuel, which according to MME is a masterwork of the Iranian steel industry and is more efficient and effective in all respects such as the degree of metallization of the product, fuel consumption, operating costs and ease of operation compared to similar technologies.

This technology is already being used in several production units across Iran including Shadegan Steel, Miyaneh Steel, Neyriz Steel, and Baft Steel companies.

The main difference of the PERED technology with other technologies is the high and tangible quality of the sponge iron metallization, which has been reached above 95 percent on the initial day. In other technologies, however, it is very difficult to achieve a degree of metallization above 95 percent during the first months of a unit’s operation.

As a subsidiary of IMIDRO, MME was registered in Germany in 1996.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has seen an 86 percent increase in the weight of its annual exports of sponge iron, a raw material mixed with scrap metal to produce steel, despite a 10 percent tariff imposed on shipments last year.

A Thursday report by the IRNA news agency cited figures by the Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA) as showing that exports of sponge iron had surged in the 11-month period ending late February by some 86 percent in terms of weight.

The figures showed that iron mills across Iran had shipped a total of 942,000 metric tons of sponge iron over the period, a significant increase compared to a similar period spanning 2018-2019, Press TV reported.

Sponge iron exports in the previous calendar year had declined year-on-year by 25 percent, said the report.

The rising exports of the raw material occur despite a government move in September to impose a 10 percent duty on sponge iron shipments to other countries. The tariff was aimed at preventing a shortage of sponge iron in Iranian steel mills.

However, figures by ISPA showed that the production of sponge iron in Iran had increased to near 25.5 million tons in the 11-month period ending late February, a surge of five percent compared to the previous year.

Domestic consumption of sponge iron in Iranian steel mills also surged by three percent over the period, said the report.

Globally, Iran is second to India in terms of the volume of sponge iron production. The country is the 10th largest steel producer in the world.

Sponge iron production in Iran is expected to increase by two million tons this year with the opening of a large mill in the southern province of Kerman.

That comes after three medium-sized mills with an annual capacity of 800,000 tons apiece were launched in the country last year.

China was the main buyer of Iran’s iron ore in the past year, importing $1.043 billion of the product from Iran, which is 97 percent of the total exports.

Iraq, India, Russia and Afghanistan stood at the next places after China in the past year.

As reported, Iran’s exports of iron ore in 2017 stood at $1.4 billion, accounting for 1.5 percent of the global market.

The country’s exports from the mining sector stood at $9 billion in the past Iranian calendar year, according to Deputy Industry Minister Mehdi Karbasian.

Karbasian, who is also the head of Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO), has announced that Iran exported 740,000 tons of sponge iron and 18 million tons of iron ore concentrate in the past year.

IMIDRO and its affiliated companies inaugurated $2 billion of projects in the said time, the official added.

As Karbasian announced, by the end of the present Iranian year (March 20, 2019), about $6 billion of new projects will be inaugurated in Iranian mining sector.

Iran is one of the top 10 mineral-rich countries where 68 types of minerals have been identified so far, including the world’s largest deposits of copper, zinc and iron, which have been tempting international investors after the lifting of economic sanctions against the country in January 2016.
