]]> TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Iraqi army thwarted an attack by the ISIS terror group north of Khanaqin district in Diyala.

A security source told Shafaq News Agency that ISIS militants launched an attack against a military post in Shirek village, 10 km north of Khanaqin, but army forces responded to the attack and forced them to flee.

In recent months, suspected ISIS militants have stepped up attacks, particularly in the area between Kirkuk, Salahuddin (north), and Diyala (east), known as the “Triangle of Death”.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over ISIS by reclaiming all of its territory – about a third of the country’s area – invaded by the terrorist group in 2014.

However, the terrorist group still maintains sleeper cells in some areas of Iraq and periodically launches attacks.

The Iraqi army and popular forces continue to carry out frequent operations against the terror group in these parts of the country.

]]> Iraq captures 12 terrorist suspects in suburb of Samarra

According To Iran News, Iraqi Army and Federal Police forces managed to arrest 12 terrorist suspects during an operation against ISIL on the outskirts of Samarra.

Extensive operations were carried out by the Iraqi Army and Federal Police against ISIL positions around Samarra, according to a statement released by Iraq’s Army.

The operation will be continued in the coming days to find ISIL terrorist members with the support of the Iraqi Air Force, the statement added.

In this operation, 12 terrorist suspects were arrested and seven ISIL headquarters were destroyed on the outskirts of Samarra.

Prior to this, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense on Saturday night, intelligence and counter-terrorism forces have arrested one of the ISIL leaders in the suburbs of Iraq’s capital.

Iraqi security forces in another operation managed to kill a terrorist in a village in Kirkuk province, injuring his companion and confiscating some weapons.
