TEHRAN (Iran News) In a statement on Saturday, Maliki called it an exclusive right of the Iraqi people to elect a person whose ability and competence they trust at this critical stage, and that it should not be ignored under any circumstances.

Referring to the political process in Iraq, Maliki described November’s parliamentary election as “successful,” saying, “We will not relinquish this achievement, nor will we compromise the Iraqi people’s right to choose whomever they trust and deem competent to lead the country.”

He also noted that Iraq seeks to establish balanced political, economic and security relations with all countries in the region and with major powers elsewhere based on mutual respect and common interests.

The leader of the State of Law Coalition made the remarks after US President Donald Trump vehemently rejected his candidacy for prime minister and threatened to end all support to Iraq if Maliki was elected.

Trump cited the experience of Maliki’s previous tenures as the reason for this stance, criticizing him for pursuing “insane policies and ideologies,” the comments that were roundly met with criticism from Maliki and his allied factions.

“‎We categorically reject the blatant American interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, and we consider it a violation of its sovereignty,” Maliki responded to Trump’s remarks in a statement on Wednesday.

U.S.’s View of Iraq

TEHRAN (Iran News) With the holding of parliamentary elections and the process of forming a new parliament scheduled for December 29, 2025, it is natural that the selection of the executive branch will extend into 2026.

The traditional ethno-sectarian balance in Iraq has, based on an unwritten convention since 2003, allocated the position of prime minister to a Shiite, the speakership of parliament to a Sunni, and the presidency to a Kurd.

Election results and ongoing negotiations indicate that Iraq’s future political composition will be shaped around several main axes. Given that no single party or coalition has secured the required majority (165 out of 329 seats), the formation of a government will necessitate broad coalition-building among Shiite, Kurdish, and Sunni groups. Nevertheless, the Shiite Coordination Framework—an alliance composed of the main Shiite parties—holds a total of 187 seats and, under the constitution, has the right to nominate a candidate for the post of prime minister. As such, it will be a key actor in Iraq’s governance.

Both the United States and Iran exert influence over Iraq’s political process. Washington seeks the selection of a prime minister who maintains distance from Iranian influence and from affiliated paramilitary groups. On the other hand, parties close to Iran wield significant influence within the Coordination Framework—an influence that the United States views as an obstacle to the continuation of its presence in Iraq.

Meanwhile, a new Sunni alliance is taking shape, as major Sunni parties have formed a united “National Political Council” to strengthen their bargaining position. At the same time, the two main Kurdish parties—the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK)—have yet to reach an agreement on a single candidate for the presidency.

The United States is also paying attention to these two Kurdish currents, hoping that through engagement it might arrange the conditions for sustaining its presence in Iraq.

Many analysts assess Iraq’s political future within the context of continuity along the axis of resistance and consider the prospect of a darker future for the United States in Iraq to be inevitable. The Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraq share inseparable pillars in their relations, which do not tolerate the presence of foreign powers in the region. Although obstacles exist in both countries—such as Western-oriented perspectives—that challenge this path, these ties remain fundamental.

Iran Exports Agricultural Drones to Iraq

TEHRAN (Iran News) Shahla Amouri, President of the Ahvaz Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture, announced the development following a high-level meeting with Iraq’s Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Maleki. “Exporting Khuzestan-made agricultural drones to Iraq represents a strategic shift that could strengthen Iran’s position in regional markets,” Amouri stated.

The meeting, aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation, focused on the introduction of modern agricultural technologies and the transfer of technical knowledge to Iraq. The initiative includes the export of advanced, fully Iranian-made agricultural drones—developed by domestic experts in Khuzestan—a symbol of Iran’s growing technological capabilities and support for local innovation.

According to Amouri, the first shipment of these drones is ready for export. She emphasized that unlike foreign models, these drones are entirely manufactured inside Iran, including their electronic boards and control systems, making them immune to international sanctions. “This gives us and our Iraqi partners a strategic advantage,” she added.

The Iraqi side also expressed strong interest in the technology. Minister Maleki reportedly welcomed the collaboration and highlighted Iraq’s commitment to modernizing its agricultural sector. “This enthusiasm shows Iraq is ready to absorb Iranian technical expertise and high-tech products,” said Amouri, who also serves on the Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce.

Despite Iraq’s policies restricting imports of agricultural products during its domestic harvest season, Amouri stressed this should not be seen as a challenge. Instead, she called for a strategic approach—producing export-oriented crops in Khuzestan aligned with Iraq’s market needs during off-seasons.

To secure Iran’s competitive edge in the Iraqi market, Amouri urged local producers to focus on quality and adopt professional marketing practices. “This drone export initiative marks just the beginning of a broader, more sustainable partnership in modern agriculture and targeted trade,” she concluded.

The move reflects a growing recognition of technology-driven diplomacy in the region, with agricultural innovation now playing a central role in strengthening Iran’s regional economic influence.

Iran, Iraq Prepare to Launch Khorramshahr–Basra Maritime Route

TEHRAN (Iran News) In a coordination meeting hosted by the Khorramshahr Port Authority, officials from both countries gathered to plan and enhance services for pilgrims, especially during the Arbaeen pilgrimage. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor of Khuzestan Province, the Special Governor of Khorramshahr, the Economic Deputy of Iran’s Consulate in Basra, the Deputy of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Khuzestan, the Director General of Khorramshahr Ports and Maritime Organization along with his delegation, as well as the Deputy CEO of Iraq’s Maritime Transport Company and his accompanying delegation.

The main goal of this joint session was to coordinate and overcome existing obstacles to facilitate smoother maritime travel between Khorramshahr and Basra during the busy Arbaeen pilgrimage season.

Ali Askari, Director General of Khorramshahr Ports and Maritime Organization, highlighted the significance of Arbaeen, stating: “Serving the pilgrims of Imam Hussein (AS) is an honor and a blessing for us as service providers.”

He stressed the close ties between the Iranian and Iraqi nations, which he said are rooted in fraternity, constructive engagement, and shared devotion to the family of the Prophet, particularly Imam Hussein (AS). Askari expressed hope for these bonds to grow even stronger.

Thanking Iraq’s warm hospitality in serving pilgrims, Askari explained that last year, nine round-trip voyages were operated during Arbaeen, which significantly eased pilgrims’ journeys. “This year, by resolving previous challenges, we aim to ensure even safer and better-organized maritime transport during the pilgrimage,” he added.

Askari announced that Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization is fully prepared to launch the route starting next week. He emphasized that passenger safety, readiness of search and rescue equipment, and protecting lives remain top priorities. He also expressed readiness to conduct joint maritime missions with the Iraqi side.

Furthermore, he suggested reducing maritime transport tariffs to encourage more pilgrims to use this route. “We propose forming a joint working group between the two countries to thoroughly review tariffs and implement necessary adjustments to make the journey more economically accessible,” Askari noted.

Askari concluded by stating that the goal is not only to operate the Khorramshahr–Basra maritime line during Arbaeen but also to maintain it throughout the year, for which the necessary infrastructure and preparations have been secured. “Iraq ”

Meanwhile, Firaq Abdul Salam Ghalib, Deputy CEO of Iraq’s Maritime Transport Company, reaffirmed the strong political, cultural, economic, and social ties between Iran and Iraq, describing Iran as a brother, friend, and neighbor.

He said serving millions of Iraqi pilgrims traveling to Iran annually is a great honor and added: “This year, like last year, we are ready to offer quality services to pilgrims and passengers traveling between Khorramshahr and Basra.”

Abdul Salam Ghalib emphasized the need to make the maritime line permanent so it can serve passengers year-round. He noted that plans are underway to purchase new passenger vessels to expand the maritime fleet.

Highlighting the significant transport capacity on this route, he announced: “We are ready to operate three daily trips and provide round-the-clock service to passengers.” He also expressed hope that lowering ticket tariffs would encourage greater public use of the new maritime link.

Iran’s Private Sector Ready to Invest in Iraq

TEHRAN (Iran News) Speaking at a high-level meeting with Iraq’s ambassador to Iran, ICCIMA President Samad Hassanzadeh emphasized that enhanced exchange of commercial information, access to investment incentives, and easier issuance of banking guarantees for Iranian investors will foster stronger private-sector cooperation between the two countries.

“One of our main priorities is the development of joint production and investment opportunities between the Iranian and Iraqi private sectors,” Hassanzadeh stated. He highlighted that this goal aligns with both governmental strategies and ICCIMA’s central agenda.

Hassanzadeh pointed to a recent investment opportunities conference in Iraq, which showcased over 140 viable investment prospects. He expressed hope that detailed information on these opportunities would be shared with the Iranian Chamber to better prepare Iranian economic actors for engagement.

He also proposed organizing training workshops to guide Iranian investors on how to enter the Iraqi market and leverage available incentives. A critical component of this process, he said, is facilitating the issuance of banking guarantees and ensuring legal clarity on ownership and long-term rights for Iranian investors in Iraq.

In addition, Hassanzadeh urged both governments to prioritize the improvement of logistics and transportation infrastructure, an essential aspect for enhancing trade and economic exchange.

Hossein Pirmoazen, Vice President of ICCIMA, reinforced the importance of Iraq as one of Iran’s key economic partners, noting a current trade balance of $12.7 billion. However, he stressed that the true potential of bilateral trade exceeds this figure.

To capitalize on these opportunities, Pirmoazen announced the formal launch of the Iran-Iraq Trade Policy Council. Composed of economic actors from Iranian provinces bordering Iraq and other major trade regions, the council is tasked with executing a roadmap to bolster trade volumes.

One of the council’s top goals is to improve Iran’s export ranking to Iraq—from fourth to second place—which hinges on enhancing transport infrastructure. “We need Iraq to approve transit operations under the TIR Convention to ease cross-border logistics,” Pirmoazen noted.

He further highlighted delays in customs clearance between the two countries, which he said have halved transportation activity. Installing X-ray scanners at border checkpoints in both Iran and Iraq could significantly address these delays.

Another strategic objective of the council is to dedicate 10% of Iran’s imports to goods coming from Basra and adjacent Iraqi provinces, in an effort to narrow the trade imbalance. Pirmoazen stated, “This is part of a broader effort to correct the 50% trade deficit Iran faces in its trade relationship with Iraq.”

Yahya Al-e Eshaq, head of the Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce, reiterated the urgency of addressing the financial and banking issues that have hampered economic relations. “The biggest barrier to sustainable long-term investment is the lack of stable monetary channels and banking coordination,” he said.

He stressed that removing obstacles to money transfers, banking guarantees, and insurance coverage is essential to unlock the full potential of bilateral cooperation. Al-e Eshaq also pointed to the untapped potential of Iraqi goods transiting to Iran, suggesting that this could be a game-changer in addressing the trade imbalance.

“Iraq can supply nearly $5 billion worth of goods to meet Iranian market demand, and Iranian businesses are fully prepared to engage,” he added.

Nasir Abdulmohsen Abdullah, Iraq’s ambassador to Iran, underscored his country’s readiness to welcome Iranian investors. “We value Iran’s role in our development projects, and there is strong potential for cooperation,” he said.

He presented a comprehensive list of investment opportunities in Iraq, including: 27 renewable energy projects across 14 provinces, 2 major oil and gas investment opportunities, 22 projects in heavy and medium industries, 9 opportunities in industrial towns and free zones, 10 agricultural projects—many in provinces bordering Iran, 10 healthcare-related projects, and 25 housing developments.

According to the ambassador, the total value of investment opportunities in Iraqi industrial zones and free trade areas alone amounts to $70 billion. He expressed confidence that expanding Iranian participation in these projects would help establish a more balanced trade relationship between the two nations.

As both sides push forward with ambitious plans to deepen economic ties, the creation of the Iran-Iraq Trade Policy Council and the open invitation from Iraq for Iranian investments signal a new chapter in bilateral economic cooperation. If logistical, financial, and regulatory challenges are addressed promptly, the two countries could move significantly closer to realizing their shared economic potential.

Iraqi Chamber of Commerce Heads Emphasize Expanding Economic Ties with Qazvin Province

TEHRAN (Iran News) The meeting brought together officials from Qazvin and Ilam chambers along with delegates from the Chambers of Commerce of Karbala, Samawah, Diwaniyah, Babylon, Kut, and Diyala in Iraq. Provincial authorities and members of the Iranian parliament were also in attendance. The session focused on streamlining trade procedures, increasing commercial exchanges, and creating joint investment opportunities.

Alireza Pazouki, a board member of the Qazvin Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the trade volume between Iran and Iraq in 2023, noting it had reached $11 billion. He stated that the two countries aim to increase this figure to $20 billion, a goal that relies heavily on active participation from both sides’ business communities.

Pazouki also emphasized Qazvin’s significant industrial and agricultural potential. “Despite its limited geographic size, Qazvin is a major producer in the detergent, food, and industrial sectors and can play a vital role in meeting the needs of the Iraqi market,” he said. He invited Iraqi business delegates to visit the province’s factories and industrial sites.

Throughout the session, both sides stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation, enhancing private sector interactions, and expanding economic exchanges.

Mousavi, head of the Babylon Chamber of Commerce, expressed optimism about strengthening economic relations with Iran, especially Qazvin. “This province’s industrial and agricultural capabilities can effectively meet Babylon’s market demands. We hope these engagements will lead to actionable agreements,” he said.

Al-Aifi, head of the Diwaniyah Chamber of Commerce, stated that Diwaniyah has vast agricultural capacity and is seeking complementary technologies and products from Iran. “Our visit to Qazvin’s production facilities introduced us to new opportunities. Strengthening commercial ties is a priority for us,” he added.

Tamimi, head of the Diyala Chamber of Commerce, mentioned that Diyala is interested in joint ventures in the food and pharmaceutical industries. “Exploring Qazvin’s capabilities was extremely valuable. These visits are a prelude to future joint investments,” he said.

Sajed, head of the Kut Chamber of Commerce, welcomed cooperation with Iranian traders, especially in packaging, detergents, and food products. “Qazvin has shown it can be a reliable partner in supplying the Iraqi market. This relationship should continue,” he noted.

The head of the Karbala Chamber of Commerce also spoke at the meeting, saying, “Karbala has always been a gateway for trade with Iran. Collaborating with provinces like Qazvin, which possess strong industrial and export capacities, can help spur regional economic growth. We are ready to establish sustainable trade routes.”

At the end of the official sessions, the Qazvin Chamber of Commerce honored the visiting Iraqi delegations with symbolic cultural gifts as a gesture of appreciation. Mousavi (Babylon), Al-Aifi (Diwaniyah), Tamimi (Diyala), Sajed (Kut), and the head of the Karbala Chamber were all formally recognized.

This friendly and cordial exchange demonstrated the shared commitment of both sides to expanding economic and commercial partnerships between the Iranian and Iraqi private sectors.

The program concluded with a series of expert panels focusing on agriculture, food industries, construction, and leather goods (especially bags and shoes). These sessions took the form of B2B meetings, enabling direct interaction among traders, producers, and economic actors, and laying the groundwork for future collaborations.

Iran, Iraq Explore New Avenues to Boost Bilateral Investment and Trade

TEHRAN (Iran News) The session, which took place on Tuesday, was led by Samad Hassanzadeh, President of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, and Nasir Abdul-Mohsen, Iraq’s Ambassador to Tehran. Discussions centered on resolving legal disputes through arbitration, developing border industrial zones, and boosting overall investment and trade flows between the two nations.

Hassanzadeh opened the meeting by highlighting Iran’s capabilities in industries such as engineering services, industrial technology, mining, and infrastructure development. He noted that these sectors provide a solid foundation for deepening collaboration with Iraq.

While acknowledging the strong diplomatic and economic ties, Hassanzadeh expressed dissatisfaction with the current $12 billion annual trade volume, calling it insufficient considering the two countries’ potential. He outlined an ambitious plan to raise this figure to $20 billion through strategic planning and enhanced cooperation.

“Iranian and Iraqi businesses are well-acquainted with each other’s markets, and this mutual understanding is a strong asset for sustainable growth,” Hassanzadeh said. “Iranian entrepreneurs are eager to invest in Iraq, especially in sectors such as food production, agriculture, and healthcare infrastructure. What we need now is active governmental support to issue the required permits and foster smoother collaboration.”

A key proposal brought forward was the creation of joint industrial parks along the Iran-Iraq border. These zones, according to Hassanzadeh, could become export hubs for both countries, supplying goods to neighboring and international markets.

He also stressed the importance of expanding cooperation in tourism—especially medical, social, and religious tourism. Hassanzadeh pointed out that Iran’s well-established medical infrastructure could attract more Iraqi health tourists, and he suggested strengthening educational tourism by welcoming more Iraqi students to Iranian universities.

Other significant topics included the completion of the Khorramshahr-Basra railway project and integration of Iran and Iraq’s electricity grids. Additionally, Iraqi officials were invited to participate in the upcoming Iran Expo 2025, set to be held in May.

Ambassador Abdul-Mohsen praised the depth of Iran-Iraq relations, describing them as a model for regional cooperation. He cited over 1,480 kilometers of shared borders, the presence of 700,000 Iraqis and 120,000 Iraqi students in Iran, and an annual cross-border traffic of 155 million individuals as evidence of deep-rooted social and cultural links.

He estimated the total trade value, including energy, at approximately $18 billion, with Iraq ranking first among nations sending tourists to Iran—many of whom come for healthcare services.

While acknowledging the strength of both nations’ private sectors, Abdul-Mohsen stressed the need to go beyond dialogue and accelerate business exchanges. “Despite strong air connectivity and short distances between our countries, the frequency of visits by business delegations remains low,” he said, calling for more direct interaction between investors.

He noted Iraq’s exports to Iran stand at just $500 million, highlighting an imbalance that favors Iran. The ambassador urged both sides to work toward a more balanced trade relationship and emphasized that joint industrial parks could help shift competitive advantages in favor of Iranian producers in Iraq’s crowded market.

On the topic of health tourism, he acknowledged some existing challenges and called for better regulation and monitoring to prevent abuses. “A more organized approach by Iran in managing health tourism could increase trust and visitor numbers significantly,” he said.

Yahya Al-e Eshaq, head of the Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce, also attended the meeting and echoed the push for deeper cooperation. He deemed the $20 billion trade target achievable and highlighted Iraq’s vast $150 billion annual investment potential.

Al-e Eshaq pointed out that Iran offers numerous opportunities, from underutilized production capacity to partnerships in industrial zones. He emphasized that tourism—particularly medical tourism—should be a key area of focus.

However, he also warned that bureaucratic obstacles are stalling progress, despite political support at the highest levels. “We need to streamline regulations on both sides to unlock this potential,” he said.

Addressing another significant barrier, Al-e Eshaq stressed the importance of resolving legal disputes, which often hinder commercial activity. He proposed enhancing arbitration mechanisms and even establishing a bilateral trade union to represent the interests of prominent business figures from both countries.

Aqil Mousavi, Commercial Counselor at the Iraqi Embassy in Tehran, underlined the need for more joint forums featuring economic stakeholders from both nations. He also advocated for the formal establishment of a joint Iraq-Iran Chamber of Commerce to institutionalize cooperation and ensure consistent progress.

As Iran and Iraq navigate a critical phase in their economic relationship, this meeting signaled a renewed political will and private sector enthusiasm to push past long-standing barriers. With practical steps, such as launching industrial parks and harmonizing trade regulations, both sides hope to turn vision into action—ultimately reshaping the region’s economic dynamics.

Iran starts $528 mln project to develop oilfields near Iraq border

TEHRAN (Iran News) At a ceremony on Saturday, the CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and local officials ordered the start of development projects at three oilfields of Sumar and Saman in Kermanshah province and at Delavaran oilfield in the province of Ilam.

The three oilfields are part of the NIOC’s Naftshahr Operation Zone, a reservoir discovered in 1931 that is connected to oilfields in neighboring Iraq. It is located some 72 kilometers from the border city of Qasr-e Shirin and 230 kilometers to the southwest of the provincial capital of Kermanshah.

A report by the official said that the projects are worth $528 million and will increase production from the three fields by five times to 20,000 barrels per day (bpd) in the next two years.

NIOC’s CEO Hamid Bovard said that the projects will increase the supply of crude oil to Kermanshah Refinery while they will create many jobs for the local youth.

Bovard said that private companies had also contributed to the projects, adding that the investors would be able to earn income from the fields within the next 20 months.

Iran has relied on domestic companies to develop its massive petroleum industry in recent years as the country has been barred from accessing foreign investment and technology because of US sanctions.

Recent data from international organizations and companies show that Iran’s oil production and exports have returned to levels seen before Washington imposed its sanctions on the country in 2018.

Pezeshkian: Joint efforts, convergence among Muslim nations key to preventing spread of terrorism

TEHRAN (Iran News) In a phone conversation with Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani on Sunday, Pezeshkian said unity among Muslim countries will help Syria in its fight against terrorist groups.

Pointing to the recent resurgence of Takfiri terrorism in Syria, he added, “Such incidents are part of the Zionist regime’s sinister plans to spread insecurity, discord and conflict among Muslim countries.”

He emphasized that Iran’s regional strategy is based on protecting territorial integrity of countries such as Syria.

“Under the circumstances that the region was moving towards relative peace following the establishment of a ceasefire in Lebanon and attention was focused on Gaza, recent events in Syria raised serious concerns about regional security,” Pezeshkian pointed out.

He expressed Iran’s readiness for any type of cooperation with the purpose of combating terrorist moves and maintaining security in the region.

Terror outfits led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allied terrorist factions launched on Friday their largest assault in Syria in years and took control of parts of the country’s second-biggest city, Aleppo, and advanced southward toward the city of Hama.

However, the Syrian army announced later that it thwarted the large-scale terrorist operations through a preemptive strike.

On Sunday, Russian and Syrian warplanes targeted militant positions in Syria’s northwestern province of Idlib to repel an offensive by foreign-sponsored Takfiri terrorists.

Speaking to Iranian lawmakers earlier on Sunday, President Pezeshkian called on Muslim countries to intervene in the Syrian crisis regarding the resurgence of Takfiri terrorists and not allow the United States and Israel to exploit the internal conflict in the Islamic Arab country.

Terrorist moves Israeli attempt to disintegrate Syria: Sudani

The Iraqi prime minister, for his part, expressed concern over the expansion of insecurity in northern Syria and warned that the recent terrorist moves are part of an Israeli attempt to undermine security and disintegrate Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He urged the international community and regional countries to play a dynamic diplomatic role to prevent the spread of terrorism.

Otherwise, Sudani said, acts of terror will pose a serious danger to global peace and security.

He also expressed his country’s readiness to play an active role in the fight against terrorist groups and said Baghdad is in constant contact with regional countries to prepare the ground for joint cooperation in this regard.

The Iraqi government and nation will focus all its attention on the battle against terrorism and will thwart the Israeli regime’s sinister plots to promote sectarianism, he emphasized.

TEHRAN (Iran News) The drone attacks were carried out in support of the innocent people of Gaza and Lebanon being killed by the Israeli regime, the resistance said in a statement early on Tuesday.

The drone attacks against the Israeli bases were also carried out in response to the occupying regime’s genocidal acts in the region, the statement says.

In recent months, the Iraqi resistance has targeted the Israeli regime’s important bases in different parts of occupied Palestine.

The Islamic resistance in Iraq had already warned that if the Israeli attacks on Gaza continued, the group would escalate its anti-Zionist operations in the occupied territories.

Since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, nearly 44,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Strip. Additionally, the number of those killed in Lebanon has surpassed 3,400.
