TEHRAN (Iran News) Qassem Rezaei, Deputy Commander of Iran’s police, has said that the Islamic Republic’s anti-narcotics police are at the forefront of combating opioid trafficking, emphasizing their critical role in maintaining national and regional security.

Speaking at the 17th meeting of police commanders with foreign military attachés in Tehran on Monday, Rezaei said that the Iranian anti-narcotics police have seized and destroyed over 3,000 tons of various types of narcotics in the past five years.

He emphasized the critical importance of international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and highlighted the Iranian police’s active diplomatic role, which includes establishing extensive partnerships with neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey, and Afghanistan.

Rezaei said that the drug trade is a humanitarian threat, and saving one life is equivalent to saving an entire community. He also noted that in addition to the significant drug seizures, over five major drug trafficking gangs have been dismantled this year alone, resulting in numerous casualties among police forces.

He called on military representatives from other countries to promote Iran’s efforts in combating drug trafficking in academic institutions, urging them to share the realities of Iran’s situation with their governments.

The deputy commander also addressed broader regional security concerns, condemning the actions of the Israeli regime and expressing hope for global peace.

The discussions took place during Police Week, which runs from October 3 to 9, aimed at honoring the contributions of law enforcement agencies in maintaining security and safety in society.

He made the announcement on Saturday, saying that West Tehran customs police traced the haul of the illicit drugs, which was destined for Germany.

According to him, the consignment included 41 kilograms of opium.

4476 grams of crystal was also seized in the Special Economic Zone Dogharoon in Razavi Khorasan Province, he added.

The amount of methamphetamine smuggled from Afghanistan to Iran has reached 10 tons in the current Iranian year (March 21- Jan. 21) which shows a ten-fold increase compared to the corresponding period last year”, he noted.

According To Iran News, Iran’s anti-narcotics police forces have managed to capture 230 kilograms of illicit drugs in a single operation in the central province of Yazd, a provincial police commander announced on Thursday.

Second Brigadier General Mohammadreza Mir-Heidari said that following comprehensive intelligence activities, the police forces traced the haul of the illicit drugs in a Peugeot sedan, which was destined for the northern parts of Iran.

According to him, the consignment included 124 kilograms of opium and 106 kilograms of hashish.

Three offenders were also captured during the operation, he added.

The police chief noted that the illegal load had entered Yazd from the southeastern parts of the country, which borders Afghanistan.

The Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug trades originating from Afghanistan in the past four decades, despite its high economic and human costs. The country has spent more than hundreds of millions of dollars on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.

The war on drug trade has also claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past four decades.
