Iranians Defy U.S. by Massive Turnout in Parliamentary Elections

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

TEHRAN – Iranians went to the polls in the country’s first general elections since the U.S. imposed sanctions following the pullout from the 2015 nuclear deal.

Polling stations across the country opened at 8:00 a.m. (0430 GMT) on Friday in the 11th parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections and Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei was among the first to cast his ballot.

Speaking after casting his vote, the Leader said, “These elections mark a day of national celebration and I have to congratulate all my fellow countrymen across the country on this occasion.”

“Secondly, the day of elections is the day of the fulfillment of the civil rights of the people which seek to vote and participate in determining the future of the country, as they are entitled to,” the Leader added.

“Thirdly, it is a religious obligation and the truth is that it is elections which guarantee the national interests of the country and anyone who is interested in the national interests of the country should vote,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Leader urged voters to turn out early in the day and to vote based on the number of total competing candidates in any given city.

Ayatollah Khamenei concluded his remarks by praying for the country and also thanking the media for covering the event.

Images shared on social media also showed long lines of people standing in front of polling stations waiting to cast their votes early in the morning.

Speaking after voting, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said he “hoped that the best make it to the 11th parliament”.

“What the people demand is a more active parliament which can better focus on resolving the problems which affect their lives,” Rouhani added.

The Iranian president said since Iran’s first parliamentary elections following the Islamic Revolution on March 1980, elections have been held regularly in the country despite times of hardship such as the 1980-88 Iraq war against Iran.

Rouhani added that the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini “always stressed the need for the elections to be held as scheduled.”

He also said Iran’s parliamentary elections have been held without any interruption of any sort in the last ten years, marking “a unique reality in the history of democracy and of Iran”.

Judiciary Chief Hojjatoleslam Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani also yesterday cast their votes in Tehran and Qom.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that “the people are the main backers of the Islamic Revolution,” adding Iran’s diplomacy is also dependent on the support of its people.

Zarif added that Iranians will not allow “someone sitting in Washington to decide for them, specifically someone who has the blood of General Soleimani on his hands”.

The region’s most popular anti-terror military figure, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, was assassinated in early January by Washington while on an official visit to Iraq.

On Friday, Guardian Council spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei slammed the sanctions as “sham and illegitimate” measures demonstrating the United States’ disregard for democracy.

He added that the U.S. in fact “desired the region’s dictatorial governments as child-killing regimes, seeing them as cows that can be milked for benefit”.

Speaking on Friday, Secretary of Iran’s Guardian Council Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati mockingly quipped at the sanctions, saying that they demonstrated the “mind paralysis” of those which have imposed them on the Guardian Council members.

“Yes, they sanctioned us and I am now thinking what to do with all the money we have left in the US. We also can’t go to the US for Christmas celebrations any longer,” Ayatollah Jannati told reporters, who laughed in response.

e than 7,000 candidates are competing to enter the parliament. A winning candidate must have at least 20 percent of the votes cast in their constituency in order to become lawmaker for a four-year term.

A total of 57,918,000 people are eligible to cast their ballots. There would be one lawmaker at Majlis per each 190,000-strong segment of the Iranian population.

According To Iran News, Secretary of Iran’s Guardian Council (GC) Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati shrugged off a recent decision by the US government to impose sanctions against the GC members, sarcastically saying that now he cannot go to the US for Christmas celebrations.

“They have sanctioned us, now I’m thinking what we should do with all the money we have in American funds, and then we can no longer go to Christmas celebrations in the US,” Jannati told reporters at a polling station in Tehran on Friday.

His comments came after US President Donald Trump’s administration on Thursday announced sanctions against five Iranian officials in the Guardian Council.

The sanctions were announced a day before Iran’s parliamentary election.

The Guardian Council is a constitutionally mandated 12-member council in Iran that, among other things, is tasked with ensuring the compatibility of the legislation passed by the parliament with the criteria of Islam and the Constitution.

The nationwide votes for the parliament and the midterm elections of the Assembly of Experts officially began in Iran on Friday morning.

Having gone through a formal qualification process by Iran’s Guardian Council, a total of 7,148 candidates, including dozens of Iranians from the religious minorities, are running for the parliament. There are 290 seats in the parliament up for grabs.

According To Iran News, Spokesman for Iran’s Guardian Council Abbasali Kadkhodaei shrugged off the recent US sanctions against the members of the council, saying it is an honor to be blacklisted by the enemies of the Iranian nation.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Kadkhodaei said the latest decision from the US administration to impose sanctions against five members of the Guardian Council is not anything new to the Islamic Republic, since the US has shown hostility towards and made threats against the Iranian nation over the past 41 years and has always received a response.

He also described the US sanctions on the Guardian Council members as an “emblem of honor”, stressing that people of Iran will give a strong response to the US hostility with their huge turnout in the Friday’s election.

Kadkhodaei underlined that the Guardian Council members have been by no means irritated at the new US sanctions, saying they are delighted to receive such medal of honor from the archenemies of Iran.

His comments came after US President Donald Trump’s administration on Thursday announced sanctions against five Iranian officials in the Guardian Council.

Iran’s Guardian Council has said that Iran’s membership in the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) is against both the security policies of the country and the Resistance Economy.

The Spokesman for the Guardian Council, which is empowered to vet legislation in Iran, said on Saturday that the bill of Iran’s membership in the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) is in contradiction to the security policy of the country and the policies of the Resistance Economy.

Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei told reporters in a presser that UNTOC bill for the Iranian government’s accession to the UNTOC also known as the Palermo bill in Iran was discussed during several meetings of the Guardian Council and some shortcomings were discovered with the bill.

The Iran’s membership in the UNTOC bill was first passed in the Iranian Parliament back in January but was sent to the Guardian Council to get its approval.

Kadkhodaei said today that there were some problems with the translated version of the Convention that were addressed and edited by the Parliament, but there are still problems with the article 3 of the bill.

He said that Guardian Council confirmed the two shortcomings with the bill that had already been noticed by the Expediency Council.

The two shortcoming with the bill were the bill’s contradiction to the security policies of the country and the Resistance Economy.

With regard to the FATF-related bill of Iran’s accession to the International Convention for the Suppression of Financing of Terrorism (CFT), the Guardian Council spokesman said that it is in conflict with clause 2 of the Article 158 of the Constitution.

He noted that Guardian Council has not received the CFT bill yet and it will announce its stance on the bill when it receives it.

Kadkhodaei further noted that the Leader of the Islamic Republic’s previous warnings on the membership in the UNTOC are of great importance to legislation bodies of the apparatus, while stressing that the different bodies can have their own say on the matter.

Iran needs to pass the bill in order to get off the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) blacklist, but the lawmakers are concerned over the certain limitations that the convention would impose on Iran’s ties with resistance groups such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah or Palestine’s Hamas.

The anti-money laundering body-FATF-has given Iran until October to pass the related bills.
