DoE Chief Isa Kalantari and Norwegian Ambassador to Tehran Lars Nordrum held a meeting on Monday about environmental challenges, including air pollution, marine pollution, global environment and usage of plastics.

Referring to US sanctions against Iran and their impact on Iran’s environment, Kalantari said Iran and other countries will face problems when sanctions are imposed on high efficient technologies.

Norway’s ambassador, for his part, maintained that the main concern of the Norwegian government is climate change and pollution of the oceans, emphasizing that Norway, unlike the US, will not put sanctions on environment and environmental technologies and will cooperate with Iran.

According to the news website of Department of Environment of the Islamic Republic of Iran (DOE), Parvin Farshchi, the Deputy Director of DOE’s Marine Environmental Department said on Saturday that “in cooperation with the marine environmental institutions and organizations a comprehensive program is being compiled to protect the Caspian Seas’ seals.”

Farshchi said painting images of seals on the ships sailing in the Caspian Sea as a form of awareness-raising is one of the of the programs being taken into account by the her organization.

She added that the fishermen are being taught how to deal with seals when they encounter them.

Meanwhile, Davood Mirshekar, the Director of the DOOE’s Marine Environmental Department said that the number of Caspian seals have sharply reduced by 90% over the past 30 years as a result of water polluters such as oil pollution, industrial waste (including heavy metals), agricultural pesticides (various types of pesticides), radioactive waste, waste water and garbage, and noise pollution (for example, caused by the activities of the oil and gas refineries, boat trips and marine vessels).

Mirshekar said that the polluters have caused serious problems for the seals’ infertility rate and have weakened their immune system.

Iran, as one of the littoral countries of the Caspian Sea, has established a hospital in Golestan Province to preserve the life of seals. In addition, Iran has put a ban on hunting this valuable species.

Hassan Zati Keykha, head of the regional Department of Environment, said the species was captured on camera near the coast of Oman Sea, south of the province.

According to the official, the coast’s diverse flora, especially the aquatic plants, and its mild weather during the cold season have made the region an ideal bird migration flyway. The southern coast hosts a wide range of migratory birds every year during winter.

He noted that it is the first time that a black stork has been sighted in the region.

Black stork is among the rarest birds in the world. It is known as a strong long-distance migrant.

The species is native to India and is wetland-dependent. Apart from India, black storks are resident birds of Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka. They primarily feed on fish, crabs and molluscs.

Earlier in July, a black stork was spotted around Dalu river in Saghez, a city in western Kurdestan Province.
