Foreign Airlines Overcharging Iranians and Draining Millions of Dollars

TEHRAN (Iran News) Rafiei highlighted that foreign airlines operating in Iran have removed ticket prices from their systems, leaving travelers vulnerable. With only four active domestic airlines, foreign carriers have inflated their prices up to 3.5 times the actual rate. For instance, a business-class ticket from Tehran to Paris on Turkish Airlines costs 140 million tomans ($2,800), while purchasing the same ticket abroad costs only 40 million tomans ($800). These airlines operate multiple daily flights, collectively moving thousands of passengers and significantly depleting Iran’s foreign currency reserves.

Additionally, Rafiei pointed out that a Tehran-Paris flight on Qatar Airways costs an astonishing 520 million tomans ($10,400). He also raised concerns about the personal data of Iranian travelers being stored on foreign servers, further compromising national security.

Rafiei lamented the fragile state of Iran’s tourism industry, which he described as facing unprecedented challenges. He attributed these problems to global events and fluctuations in the value of the Iranian rial, which directly impact the sector. Despite minimal government support, the private sector has managed to sustain the industry independently.

“The tourism sector benefits ordinary citizens directly,” Rafiei noted. “It generates revenue without relying on state resources or subsidies, making it a vital economic asset.”

He urged the government to facilitate, rather than hinder, the industry’s progress.

Rafiei criticized the imposition of a €10 departure tax on Iranian travelers at airports, in addition to existing exit fees. He argued that passengers should not bear the tax burden for flights operating outside Iran’s airspace. He also underscored the high cost of domestic tourism, which has become uncompetitive due to the devaluation of the Iranian rial and rising expenses.

Disputing official statistics, Rafiei said claims of six million foreign tourists visiting Iran annually are exaggerated. “We don’t even have 600,000 genuine tourists,” he stated, asserting that most visitors are not actual tourists but individuals transiting through the country.

Mohsen Fathi, head of the Parliamentary Tourism Faction, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government, parliament, and private sector to revitalize the industry. He praised recent legislative efforts, such as integrating tourism into Iran’s five-year development plan, as steps toward progress.

The private sector has shown a commitment to strengthening ties with government agencies, a relationship that Rafiei hopes will continue under new leadership in the Tourism Ministry.

As Iran grapples with high travel costs, data security concerns, and dwindling foreign currency reserves, stakeholders in the tourism sector are urging swift and decisive action to protect the industry and its contribution to the national economy.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Millions of Iranians and Muslims across the world took part in the International Quds Day rallies across Iran and other Muslim countries to show their solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people and condemn Israeli atrocities and acts of aggression against Palestinians in the occupied territories.

The rallies in Iran, organized by the Islamic Propagation Coordination Council (IPCC), started at 10 a.m. local time (0630 GMT) in Tehran and other cities across the country on Friday.

People taking part in the rallies intend to communicate to the world the deplorable situation of the Palestinians and condemn Israeli atrocities which have intensified this year, especially since the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Ten routes have been designated for the rallies throughout the Iranian capital, where people from all walks of life are heading to the iconic Enqelab (revolution) Square.

Every year on the last Friday of Ramadan, worldwide rallies are held to support the Palestinian people’s resistance against Israel and the struggle to liberate their territories, which have been occupied by Israel for decades.

The annual event is seen as an opportunity for freedom-seeking people across the world, regardless of faith, to voice their support for the Palestinian cause and vent their anger against the apartheid regime in Tel Aviv, which has occupied Palestinian territories since 1967.

The International Quds Day is among the legacies of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, who is revered as a spiritual leader by Muslims across the world. Back in 1979, shortly after leading an Islamic Revolution which toppled the US-backed Shah of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini named the last Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan the Quds Day.

In Tehran and addressing the participants in the rally Majlis Speaker Mohammad BaqerQalibaf said International Quds Day revealed the criminal face of the child-killing Zionist regime in front of the people of the world.

He said that the initiative of Imam Khomeini (RA) in appointing International Quds Day has turned the issue of Palestine into a popular and global issue in the world.

International Quds Day is among the legacies of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, who is revered as a spiritual leader by Muslims across the world.

Today, thanks to Quds Day, all Muslims can say that Al-Quds is the capital of all Palestine and Palestine is the capital of the Islamic world, he added.

Qalibaf also noted that terrorism exists in the essence of this regime.

Describing the Zionist regime as the number one enemy of the Islamic world and humanity, Ghalibaf said that this enemy sought to show Iran and the Resistance as a threat to Islamic countries.

The Zionists sought to create conflict in the Islamic world and tried to create differences between Islamic countries, and they tried to present themselves as peace seekers and Iran as a problem in the Islamic world, but the Leader of the Islamic Revolution thwarted such a plot in a wise manner, he said.

In order to counter this conspiracy, the Leader put brotherhood between Shiites and Sunnis on agenda and made efforts to bring the Islamic world closer together, Qalibaf added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he hailed the achievements of the Palestinian Resistance Front against the occupation regime and said today, Resistance, is not only passive but prepared to counter Zionists.

Referring to movements of Takfiri and ISIL terrorists sponsored by the US and Zionist regime in the region, Qalibaf said that the Resistance Front and Martyr Soleimani did not allow such enemies an opportunity to harm the Islamic world.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –President Seyed Ebrahim Raisi mentions freedom in history and says “Where have you seen arrogant tell other nations that they want to rob other countries’ resources? They come with slogans of freedom and bring misery to the nations.”

Delivering a speech at the farewell ceremony for the bodies of 400 unknown martyrs of holy defense in Tehran, President Raisi said: “Wherever they went, they usually claimed freedom and equal rights for humans.” He added: “Modern Ignorance is the same as the old one, but “isms” have been added to it. This modern ignorance has power components such as media and technology.”

While praising the leadership of the late Imam Khomeini (R) and Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, Raisi said: “If there is a shortage today, it is related to the way executive bodies, not the leadership run the country. If you see success in any part of the country, it is where the words of the imam and the Leader have been followed, and wherever there is a shortage, it is related to those who did not believe in the jobs and the responsibilities they have accepted or the ability to carry out the duties assigned to them.”

“Today, we are strong in many areas, we have made a lot of progress, and the enemy’s anger is also due to these advances. I must say that all the pressures against Iran have failed shamefully”, he underscored,

“If the enemies think they can achieve their goals by making rumors, they are wrong. Why do you send us a message after the riots finish? You say, in your messages, that you are ready to talk, and you claimed that you were not looking for a regime change,” the president highlighted. “We welcome everyone, but we will not show mercy to those who oppose us,” The president said, referring to those who were involved in the recent unrest in the country.”

Coinciding with the days of martyrdom of Hazrat Fatemeh Zahra (PBUH), a funeral ceremony for the body of 200 unknown martyrs of the Holy Defense was held on Monday in the Museum of Islamic Revolution and Holy Defense.

Most of the bodies of these 400 martyrs are related to the operations “Badr,” “Ramadan,” “Karbala 5”, “Karbala 6”, “Wal Fajr 1”, “Beit al-Moghadas” in 1988 in the areas of “East Tigris,” “East Basra, “Shalamcheh” and “Somar.” They have been investigated by the Search Committee of the General Headquarters of the Armed Forces.

Among these martyrs, there are 200 unknown martyrs. According to Brigadier General “Bahman Kargar,” the head of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Artifacts and Publication of the Values of the Holy Defense, to identify the pure bodies of the unknown martyrs, their DNA is taken. After notifying the family and making arrangements, if the family agrees, the martyr remains in the same place of burial, otherwise, depending on the request, the body of the martyr is moved to the place where the family lives.

Another ceremony for 400 unknown martyrs was held early on Tuesday in front of the Main Entrance of the University of Tehran and with presence of President Raisi.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Some 60 million people in Iran are residing in flood-prone cities and villages, deputy head of the Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization, Hooshang Jazi, said.

Residents in 450 cities and 8,650 villages and towns of the country are at risk of flooding, he further lamented, IRNA reported on Monday.

According to him, each flood brings the country a loss of 4.4 trillion rials (nearly $12.2 million).

In order to prevent flood damages in these areas, the Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization has prepared appropriate preventive measures and programs, he further announced.

Stating that the excessive extraction of underground resources has increased the risk of land subsidence, Jazi said the soil erosion rate in Iran is 16.4 tons per hectare per year, while its global index is 2.5 tons per hectare.

He further said that 125 million hectares of natural resources are exposed to erosion, which is very high and requires a solution.

According to UN surveys this year, the main natural disasters listed for Iran are drought, floods, and earthquakes. Subsidence is also a phenomenon that has emerged as one of the consequences of drought along with the aforementioned three challenges.

The main causes of flood in the country include rainfall fluctuations, climate change, uncontrolled water withdrawal from the aquifers, and improper infrastructure.

The national budget bill for the current Iranian calendar year 1401, which started on March 21, has allocated 16 trillion rials (about $53 million) for watershed management, which is nearly fourfold of the budget for the past year.

With the implementation of watershed management projects, 9 tons per hectare of water erosion has been reduced annually, and in mountainous areas, 570 cubic meters of water have been extracted per hectare.

Moreover, some 1000 cubic meters of water per hectare is stored in underground aquifers and prevent the entry of 4 cubic meters of sediment behind the dams.

FB/MG

HIGHLIGHT: Some 16 trillion rials (about $53 million) has been allocated for watershed management, nearly fourfold of the budget for the past year.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Referring to the footprints of the enemy in recent riots in the country, President Ebrahim Raisi says that Iranian university students and professors will not allow the false dreams of the enemy to come true.

Speaking in a ceremony held on the occasion of the start of the New Academic Year (2022-2022) at Alzahra University, Ebrahim Raisi pointed to the recent riots in the country over the death of a 22-year-old Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, and said that the enemy thought that it could pursue its malicious plots in the country through universities.

But the enemy was unaware of the vigilance of Iranian university students and professors that they do not the enemy’s false dreams to come true, he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he pointed to the negotiations on Iran nuclear deal, saying, “From the beginning, we announced that we will not leave the negotiation table, but we will commit to honorable negotiations, and today the logic of the Islamic Republic of Iran is accepted in the world.”

The United States, under former President Donald Trump, abandoned the agreement in May 2018 and reinstated unilateral sanctions that the agreement had lifted.

The talks to salvage the agreement kicked off in Vienna in April last year, months after Joe Biden succeeded Trump, with the intention of examining Washington’s seriousness in rejoining the deal and removing anti-Iran sanctions. Despite notable progress, the US’ indecisiveness and procrastination caused multiple interruptions in the marathon talks.

Raisi clarified, “When an educated Iranian woman presents an important scientific achievement at the world level and is placed on a platform, the flag of the Islamic Republic is raised and the national anthem of Iran is played, this creates strength for the country”.

Stating that science and knowledge are important components of power and ability, Ayatollah Raisi said, “Today, the country has achieved high levels of power and ability with the efforts of professors and students. While in the past we needed to import barbed wire in this country and we were denied the same, today we have achieved amazing progress in various scientific and industrial fields despite the most extensive sanctions, and with God’s help, this path will continue”.

In another part of his speech, the President congratulated the new students and stated, “Devote all your efforts to research, and the government will also use all its efforts to provide the necessary equipment and facilities for you”.

Raisi described solving the concern of employment for male and female students as one of the tasks of the government and said, “The government considers the university as its think tank and expects universities and scientific centers to come to the aid of the government with new ideas and initiatives”.

Raisi continued his speech by referring to the traces of the enemy in the recent riots and stated, “The enemy thought that they could follow their desires inside the university, unaware that our students and professors were awake and would not allow the enemy’s false dreams to come true”.

He Raisi explained the logic of the government in the negotiations to lift the sanctions and the enemy’s attempt to impose its conditions on Iran and said, “We announced from the beginning that we would not leave the negotiation table, but we would stick to honorable negotiations, and today the logic of the Islamic Republic of Iran is accepted in the world”.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian experts succeeded in repairing a 50-year-old Boeing 747 cargo plane amid harsh US sanctions against the country.

“The Boeing 747 is 50 years old but it joined Homa (the national flag-carrier Iran Air) in 2008 and Iranian specialists have overhauled it under the conditions of sanctions,” Homa’s senior repair technician Rahim Baghban told reporters on Monday, Fars News Agency reported.

He added that the CEO of Boeing Company has expressed appreciation that Iran has flown the company’s planes for 50 years with great safety.

Baghban said that the overhauled Boeing 747 is a wide-bodied plane, used by Homa for humanitarian measures and assisting people injured by natural disasters.

The head of Iran Civil Aviation Organization, Touraj Dehqani Zanganeh, announced last month that the country’s specialists had gained the know-how and capability to repair and overhaul heavy airplanes.

“Today, the repair and maintenance of different aircraft, from light to heavy, is carried out by specialists and experts of the aviation industry,” said Dehqani Zanganeh.

He added that several domestic knowledge-based companies produce the most complicated parts needed by the aviation industry.

Also, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami announced in February that the country has taken important measures in the aviation sector that prove Iran’s self-confidence in defusing the US sanctions.

“The overhauled jets are of F-4, F-14, F-27, Sukhoi and Mirage types, as well as C-130 and 707 transport aircraft,” Brigadier General Hatami said in a ceremony where eight domestically-overhauled military aircraft were delivered to the Iranian Army on February 20.

The minister also noted that tech-savvy countries have refused to provide the Iranian Air Force with even the smallest spare parts and services it needs while under threats from the US and its allies, as well as tough sanctions and an all-out economic war against the Islamic Republic over the past 40 years.

However, he noted that Iran had taken important measures in the aviation industry that prove its self-confidence in neutralizing sanctions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian scientist Sirous Asgari who is behind bars at a US immigration jail will be repatriated as soon as he tests negative for the novel coronavirus, spokesperson for the Iranian administration said.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Ali Rabiee said Tehran is closely monitoring the situation surrounding the imprisoned Iranian scientist through its interests section in Washington, DC.

“… the US must abandon immoral and inhumane behavior in this case,” Ali Rabiee said.

He also noted that Dr. Sirous Asgari will be released from the US prison and return home if he tests negative for COVID-19.

“All Iranian inmates in the US have been imprisoned on bogus charges, and we have obtained a report that they are being held without medical care” the spokesman deplored.

Dr. Sirous Asgari, a materials science and engineering professor who spoke out in March about the unsanitary and “inhumane” conditions in detention, was placed in an isolation cell this week inside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) jail in Louisiana.

His lawyers learned on Tuesday that his COVID-19 test was positive, and in a phone call with the Guardian, Asgari had a bad cough and said he had had a fever for days.

He and his family are calling for his release to a medical facility where he can receive proper care.

“It makes sense to send me to the hospital as soon as possible. I don’t trust them at all,” the 59-year-old said on Tuesday amid repeated coughing fits. “If something happens, they are not fast responders … I prefer to leave this dirty place.”

Asgari’s story sparked international outrage after he spoke about his fears of COVID-19 spreading inside crowded Ice facilities with substandard cleaning practices and a lack of supplies. The professor, who has a history of respiratory problems, was exonerated in a US sanctions trial last year, but Ice has refused to release him or allow him to return to Iran. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif recently called for his release, as have some US lawmakers and human rights groups.

Sirous Asgari is confined to a small room at the Winn correctional center in Louisiana, a state hard hit by the coronavirus.

Ice informed the attorneys that Asgari’s test was positive on Tuesday, but Asgari said Ice had not yet told him the results and that he had learned of them on a call with his family and lawyers. “The nurse … always says the test results are not in,” Sirous Asgari said, noting that the medical staff checked on him twice or three times a day.

Ice told Asgari’s lawyers he would only be released to a hospital if he was struggling to breathe, the attorneys said.
