Members of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission have traveled to the areas near the common border with the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, the commission’s spokesman told Tasnim.

Abolfazl Amoee said the lawmakers are going to prepare a report on the developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the impact of the disputes between Yerevan and Baku on the border areas of Iran.

On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to be careful not to violate Iran’s border amid the outbreak of the new round of fighting.

His comments came after officials in Iran’s northwestern province of East Azarbaijan reported that mortar shells fired by the warring sides in the latest round of fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan have hit border rural areas in the province.

According to reports, one of the mortars has fallen in a village in Khoda Afrin county, injuring a 6-year-old child.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A group of Iranian Parliament lawmakers put forward a motion for an automatic withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal in case the activation of snapback mechanism in the JCPOA would re-impose the UN sanctions on Tehran.

The proposal, signed by 49 MPs and submitted to the Parliament’s presiding board, asserts that Iran must withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) automatically as soon as the snapback mechanism is triggered and the UN sanctions are reinstated.

The lawmakers also lashed out at the US government for mounting pressures on Iran and its push to trigger the snapback mechanism after its unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018.

While the US has violated the JCPOA and is attempting to re-impose the UN sanctions against Iran by resorting to the JCPOA mechanism, it is necessary to protect the national interests, said the proposal.

Considering that remaining in the JCPOA will not be in Iran’s interests and the UN Security Council sanctions will be re-imposed if the snapback mechanism is triggered, the Iranian government must be required to withdraw from the nuclear deal in that case as a preemptive measure, the MPs said in the motion.

As part of an illegal push, the United States is trying to invoke the snapback mechanism in the JCPOA despite its withdrawal in May 2018 in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that endorses the nuclear deal.

The key point in the snapback mechanism is that in case of a failure to resolve a dispute among the parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the UNSC would vote on a resolution “to continue the sanctions lifting”, meaning that a single veto from one of the UNSC members (most likely from the US) would end the sanctions’ lifting and slap the previous sanctions against Tehran again.

Iranian lawmakers on Wednesday approved an amendment to the first article of a bill on the country’s accession to Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) treaty – a series of standards set by the FATF (Financial Action Task Force).

During an open session of the parliament on Wednesday morning, the MPs discussed problems for which the Guardian Council had sent the CFT bill back to the parliament.

In the meeting, chaired by Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani and attended by 207 lawmakers, an amendment to Article 1 of the bill was approved with seven stipulations, including one stating that none of treaty’s articles that run counter to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Constitution would be binding for the country.

The mentioned article is planned to be sent to the Guardian Council for approval.

In another decision on Wednesday, the parliamentarians insisted on their legislation on Article 2 of the bill and did not approve objections raised by the Guardian Council.

Therefore, the Article 2 of the bill on Iran’s accession to CFT treaty will be sent to the Expediency Council for more examination.

Back on October 7, the Iranian Parliament had approved the bill on the country’s accession to the CFT treaty.

Later, the Guardian Council’s spokesman, Abbasali Kadkhodaei, said that the council had examined the bill and decided it has some problems and ambiguities, sending the bill back to the parliament.

According to the Financial Action Task Force, Iran had until October to complete reforms that would “bring it into line with global norms or face consequences” that could further deter investors from the country.

To fulfill FATF requirements, President Hassan Rouhani’s administration has proposed four bills to the parliament for approval, two of which are still undecided, including the Palermo Convention.

On June 10, the Iranian parliament passed a law allowing the country to join the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), but has decided to put on hold debates on accession to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for two months.

Iran’s parliament had in May adopted new amendments proposed by the government to the country’s Anti-Money Laundering (AML) law as part of efforts to improve connections to the international banking and trade system.

Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) involves investigating, analyzing, deterring and preventing sources of funding for activities intended to achieve political, religious or ideological goals through violence and the threat of violence against civilians.
