Judiciary Chief Urges Europe to Honor Commitments in Practice

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Judiciary Chief Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi called on the European parties to the 2015 nuclear deal to honor their commitments practically instead of voicing verbal support.

Addressing a Monday meeting of the Judiciary’s High Council, Raeisi said, “Europeans must honor their commitments in practice. Issuing statements and making speeches are not sufficient.”

The top judge also stressed that need for plans to urge the EU to fulfill its undertakings.

He further lashed out at the US government for reneging on the previous agreements, saying it amounts to a brazen violation of the international law and the law of treaties.

The Judiciary chief also warned that linking the settlement of Iran’s internal problems to the foreign issues or the results of elections in the other countries would be a strategic mistake.

The top Iranian judge then decried the humiliating move by a number of regional countries to normalize ties with the Zionist regime.

Raeisi finally underlined that the Islamic Republic’s strategy is based on active and mighty resistance in the face of enemy, building the country with reliance on domestic capacities, and defending the national rights at the international organizations.

His comments came after the US government failed to attract support from the UN Security Council for a resolution to re-impose the UN sanction on Iran by resorting to the so-called snapback mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal, which the US scrapped in 2018.

Washington says it has unilaterally triggered the snapback mechanism for resumption of virtually all UN sanctions on Iran, including the arms embargo.

All other parties to the JCPOA and nearly all UN Security Council members have said they do not believe the US has the right to re-impose the UN sanctions and that the US move has no legal effect.

On Friday, Britain, France and Germany told the Security Council that UN sanctions relief for Iran – agreed under the 2015 nuclear deal – would continue beyond Sunday, despite Washington’s assertion.

Wanted judge arrested in Romania

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Judiciary said a judge, who is accused of receiving €500,000 in bribes, has been arrested in Romania.

Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaeili announced on Saturday that Judge Gholamreza Mansouri is currently held by the International Criminal Police Organization, known as Interpol.

“This person is in the custody of Interpol in Romania and the necessary arrangements have been made to extradite him; but given that the country does not have foreign flights at all due to the coronavirus, the move will be done with a delay and we hope that the bilateral cooperation will continue,” Esmaeili said, according to Press TV.

Mansouri is implicated in a major ongoing financial corruption case involving Akbar Tabari, former deputy head of the Judiciary for executive affairs.

On Thursday, Iran called on the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to help the Islamic Republic arrest the criminals who have fled the country and return the money they have embezzled.

The Islamic Republic’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Kazem Gharibabadi said that he has asked the new UNODC executive director to get involved in the issue and have the Iranian criminals arrested and extradited, according to Tasnim News Agency.

In a message on his Instagram page, Gharibabadi said some convicts have looted people’s property and now take refuge in the safe haven of some Western countries.

On Monday, Iran’s Judiciary Chief Seyyed Ebrahim Raeisi ordered bringing back and prosecuting the criminals convicted of financial crimes who have fled the country to escape justice.

“Those facing charges must surrender to justice and know that they cannot escape justice,” the top judge stressed.

Raeisi also lashed out at certain Western states for harboring criminals and fugitives who have fled Iran.

“One of the examples of injustice and major cruelties to humanity is that a number of countries claiming to fight against organized corruption and money-laundering have sheltered economic criminals and their dirty money,” the Judiciary chief added.

Since August 2018, Iran’s Judiciary has been holding public trials of individuals involved in major economic corruption cases.
