Iranian Health Minister to Deliver Good News on Coronavirus Vaccine

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Iranian minister of health said he has good news about a homegrown vaccine for the coronavirus disease, adding that Iran is catching up with advanced countries in vaccine production.

In an address to a meeting at the Ministry of Health and Medical Education on Tuesday, Saeed Namaki said he has good news about the coronavirus vaccine being made in Iran.

“We don’t want to make delusional comments and don’t want to say that the vaccine would be available to the public until autumn,” the health minister said.

“Today, we can only say that we are not lagging behind many in the world who claim to have produced the vaccine,” Namaki added.

Describing the production of the vaccine as a result of teamwork, the health minister said Iranian experts should exchange their findings so that Iran would be among the first countries with tangible progress in making COVID-19 vaccine.

Last week, Namaki said a homegrown vaccine for the novel coronavirus has successfully passed the initial tests.

“(It has) passed the initial tests and (we) hope to reach promising stages,” he said.

The minister had also highlighted Iran’s success in synthesizing the medicine for treatment of the coronavirus despite the pressure of cruel sanctions, saying two local pharmaceutical companies are going to supply hospitals across the country with Remdesivir.

Head of the Food and Drug Administration of Iran said on Monday that Iranian-made Remdesivir, an antiviral medication for the treatment of coronavirus patients, would be put on the market within the next few days.

Parliament approves Namaki as Health Minister

The Iranian Parliament approved Saeed Namaki as the new Health Minister of the country in today’s vote of confidence session.

The session was held with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in attendance who defended the proposed minister and also talked about Iran’s achievements in the health sector.

At the end of the session, lawmakers approved Saeed Namaki with 229 votes in favor, 25 against, and 4 abstentions.

Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi, the previous health minister, resigned from his position over proposed budget cuts in early January.

Born in Kashan, central Iran, Namaki has a Ph.D. in pharmacy and is considered the first non-physician Iranian health minister. He is a member of Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences faculty and has served as deputy head of Planning and Budget Organization and also deputy chief of Iran’s Department of Environment.

Rouhani picks new candidate for health ministry

President Hassan Rouhani has picked the caretaker of Ministry of Health and Medical Education for the ministerial position.

In a letter submitted to the Parliament on Monday, Rouhani picked Saeed Namaki, the current caretaker of Ministry of Health and Medical Education, as the new candidate for the ministerial position.

Based on the parliamentary regulations, the MPs will have one week to study the new candidate’s qualifications.

Rouhani appointed Namaki in the caretaker position early January as soon as he accepted the resignation of former Health Minister Hassan Ghazizadeh.

Iranian health minister reportedly resigns

According to the reports, Iranian Health Minister Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi has handed in his resignation to the cabinet last week.

Fars News Agency reported that Hashemi has bid farewell to his deputies and colleagues after today’s meeting at Health Ministry’s headquarters in Tehran.

The minister has not attended recent cabinet meetings which intensified the speculations about his resignation.

MP Elyas Hazrati tweeted on Sunday that Hashemi has resigned due to the reduction of health sector budget in the Budget Bill for the next Iranian calendar year 1398 (to start March 21, 2019).

According to reports, President Rouhani has not yet accepted the resignation and government officials are trying to convince Hashemi to continue his job.
