Iran Rejects Reports on Germany’s Summoning of Envoy

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi dismissed as unfounded recent reports that the country’s charge d’affaires in Germany has been summoned to the European country’s foreign ministry over a suspected espionage case.

In a statement released on Monday, Qassemi said he would not confirm the report since it is completely false.

Iran’s temporary charge d’affaires has gone to the German Foreign Ministry at the behest of the Iranian Embassy and the claims on his being summoned are “basically untrue”, the spokesman added.

He further slammed allegations leveled against Iran aimed at undermining age-old relations between Tehran and the European Union, saying that it is not surprising to see such moves on the part of enemies.

Commenting on the claims by some German media about the arrest of an Afghan-German national for spying for the Iranian government, he rejected any link between the alleged individual and Islamic Republic, saying such allegations are made by those trying to harm Iran-EU relations at this sensitive juncture.

His comments came days after unconfirmed reports appeared in German media suggesting that a 50-year-old Afghan-German dual national who worked for the German military had been arrested on suspicion of transferring sensitive military data to Tehran.

Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday that Abdul Hamid S. had been remanded in custody pending an investigation.

The German defense ministry did not confirm the report although it said it was aware of the espionage case involving a member of the military.

Iran-UK new round of talks to kick off Sat.

Iran and UK will begin a fresh round of bilateral talks in Tehran from September 1, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

A fresh round of bilateral talks between Iran and UK will kick off today with the visit of British Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt, to Tehran.

Burt is the first UK minister to visit Iran since the US unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in May, triggering criticism and dismay from other signatories to the agreement, including UK, as well as other European nations.

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the talks will focus on bilateral economic cooperation following the US pullout from the JCPOA, as well as seeking financial and monetary mechanisms between the two countries that could bypass US unilateral sanctions.

The two sides will also confer on the latest developments in the region.

The Iranian side will be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Abbas Araghchi. The Iranian diplomat was a senior negotiator for the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Iranian amb. to Oman not linked to any political party

Iranian Foreign Ministry Public Relations Department reported that Iranian ambassador to Oman is not linked to any political party in the country.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Public Relations Department strongly denied the release of news with regard to the membership of Iranian Ambassador to Oman Mohammad-Reza Nouri-Shahroudi in one of the political parties of the country.

According to the Article 89 of the Constitution of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, membership of employees and staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in any of political parties and sects of the country is strictly forbidden, the report added.

However, the news item published with regard to the membership of Iranian ambassador to Oman in one of the political parties of the country has been dismissed.
