TEHRAN (Iran News) – E-commerce contribution to Iran’s GDP rises nearly 2.5 times. The share of e-commerce in Iran’s gross domestic product (GDP) has increased by 2.4 times, Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Farhad Dejpasand announced.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of two e-commerce projects on Tuesday, Dejpasand underlined the significance of e-commerce in the country’s economy and said: “In recent years, the realization of tax income targets has grown well, a third of which is due to the use of new technologies.”

“Blockchains will account for 10 percent of the world’s gross domestic product in the next four years,” he said, adding: “As electricity consumption has increased we limited the mining of cryptocurrencies, while in the long run, we cannot stand in the way of technology development.”

According to the official, using new technologies has helped the country withstand the U.S. economic sanctions to a great extent.

Pointing to the use of new technologies in the capital market, Dejpasand said: “Regarding the capital market, we have the capacity to become the top country in the region in terms of smartening indicators.”

The minister further mentioned the great contribution of the e-commerce and new technologies in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic, saying: “Knowledge-based companies and startups have helped us a great deal to manage this disease so that other countries request to use our experiences.”

Back in February, the head of the E-Commerce Development Centre of Iran had announced that the value of Iran’s e-commerce transactions during the first six months of the previous Iranian calendar year (March 20-September 21, 2020) increased by four times compared to the same period in the preceding year.

The number of new licenses issued for online businesses also tripled in the mentioned six months compared to the same period in the preceding year, Ali Rahbari said.

According to Rahbari, this statistic shows that many have changed their shopping methods and chosen online shopping, and also traditional and offline businesses have tried to have online sales, while online businesses have tried to strengthen the capacity of their various departments.

The minister made the remarks in a meeting of the cabinet and Majlis Economic Committee members on Monday, IRIB reported.

Dejpasand said the mentioned plan consists of 32 significant programs and 97 percent of it has been already realized.

To minimize the effects of sanctions on the country’s economy, Iran is adopting some new economic approaches and the main important one is to reduce reliance on the oil revenues.

To materialize this objective, the country has put strengthening domestic production, boosting non-oil exports specially to the neighbor countries, and collecting taxes more systematically on top of its economic policies.

Earlier this month, Dejpasand said that reducing the current year’s budget dependency on oil exports is the most important economic objective in the country; and his ministry is seriously following up defined tax policies to this end.

The proposed 17.03 quadrillion rials ($405 billion) budget bill for this Iranian year (started on March 21) has envisaged 1.53 quadrillion rials (about $36.5 billion) of tax income.

The minister has also stressed that an efficient tax system should be a priority in the government’s policy making.

A non-oil budget requires other stable income sources.

In a message on the occasion of the National Day of Tax (July 7), Dejpasand stressed the necessity of planning for using stable non-oil income.

He wrote the sanctions should be considered an opportunity to reform the budget structure and to take the advantage of tax potential.

“Following a plan for supporting foreign investment, we have provided facilities for attracting foreign investments over $250,000, and on this basis we are expected to have a good performance in foreign investment this year,” Dejpasand said in a press conference.

The official noted that in the Q4 of the last Iranian calendar year (December 21, 2018-March 20, 2019), nearly $4 billion of foreign investment was attracted in various areas while the figure stood at $1.7 billion in last year’s first half (March 21 -September 22, 2018).

He said the government managed to collect 1.09 quadrillion rials (about $25.952 billion) of tax revenues during the past Iranian calendar year of 1397 (ended on March 20, 2019), which means the country’s annual tax income plan has come true by 97 percent.

The official also informed that his ministry has called on the customs administration to take all necessary measures in order to facilitate non-oil trade and to make it easier for traders to export their commodities.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the finance minister stated that despite the U.S. sanctions, the country’s non-oil revenues did not decrease significantly.

“So far, in the first three months of the current year (March 21-June 21) non-oil exports have also had an acceptable amount,” he added.

Dejpasand finally noted that the government has prepared a 12-fold strategic program for bartering oil revenues in order to keep the country’s foreign trade afloat.

He didn’t provide more details regarding this program.

Earlier in May, President Hassan Rouhani ordered executive bodies to take immediate steps to remove obstacles to domestic and foreign investment in the country.

The decisions came as the U.S. has introduced the harshest ever sanctions against Iran in line with the Trump administration’s “maximum pressure” on Iran, a policy that analysts and politicians say is intended to strangulate Iran.

Ebrahim Raeisi, the judiciary chief, also said in late May that all officials are duty bound to support businessmen and entrepreneurs.

During a meeting with a number of businessmen, Raeisi said that under the current situation in which the United States has waged an economic war on Iran, all officials and state bodies are duty bound to fully support businessmen and entrepreneurs.

Answering to the questions of the reporters on the sidelines of the 85th meeting between the ministry and Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mine and Agriculture (ICCIMA) as the representative of the country’s private sector, Farhad Dejpasand said the ministry have done all legal actions to this end and just the affairs related to the company (which is to be set up for such market) are being performed.

On May 10, the minister had said that an organized forex market will be launched in the country in the coming week.

Dejpasand said the mentioned market is due to set the real foreign currency exchange rates.

Establishment of this market has been approved by the Money and Credit Council (MCC), the highest banking policy-making body of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI), on January 8 as the CBI aims to explore the real volume of demand and supply in the foreign currency market through a new mechanism.

Regarding this market, a CBI official said on May 5 that the new mechanism aims to organize the transactions in the foreign currency exchange market between the exchange shops, Mehr news agency reported.
