Iran-Switzerland Trade Grows by 12%, Reaches $241m in 2024

TEHRAN (Iran News) The report outlines that while bilateral trade had once reached $2.5 billion in the 1970s and $3.2 billion in 2010, the imposition of international sanctions has significantly impacted economic ties, reducing trade volume to its current level. In 2024, Swiss exports to Iran accounted for approximately $221 million, while Iran’s exports to Switzerland were only around $20 million.

This trade imbalance highlights Iran’s reliance on imported goods from Switzerland, particularly pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, machinery, and chemicals. In contrast, Iran primarily exports agricultural products and handicrafts such as pistachios, saffron, and carpets. The disparity reflects a mismatch in the trade structures of the two countries, as well as the constraints imposed by sanctions on Iran’s ability to export to European markets.

The report emphasizes Switzerland’s strength in pharmaceuticals, machinery, financial services, and luxury goods, identifying it as a valuable potential partner for Iran. However, sanctions, competition from China, and international pressure continue to hinder the development of stronger trade ties.

Looking ahead, the report notes that lifting sanctions, enhancing financial channels such as the Swiss Humanitarian Trade Arrangement (SHTA), and expanding cooperation could help restore trade to historical levels. It also identifies opportunities for partnership in key sectors such as healthcare, industry, and energy. Nevertheless, in the short term—through the end of 2025—growth is expected to remain modest, with humanitarian trade likely to remain the primary focus under existing restrictions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – President Seyed Ebrahim Raisi in meeting with the new Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Nadine Olivieri Lozano, who was submitting her credentials, announced Tehran’s full readiness for broadening its all-out ties with Switzerland.

In the meeting on Monday, the President criticized the U.S. for its unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA and reiterated it is up to the U.S. to decide its return to the deal and observe all the details of the talks and to be committed.

Raisi added that the U.S. and European troika’s action in preparing the resolution to be approved at the meeting of the board of governors of IAEA which talks were underway was an irresponsible act and it was against the soul of talks and agreement and it was a behavioral contradiction.

He then pointed to the history of Iran and Switzerland ties which dates back to 100 years ago and said Iran is ready to broaden its ties with all countries especially in the fields of economy, politics and trade.

Raisi also pointed to the diplomatic role of Swiss Embassy in Tehran and said the U.S. and European countries are involved in miscalculation regarding Iran and expressed hope Switzerland reflects the truth about Iran to other countries in order to realize Iran despite their hostilities has continued its progress and their hegemonic policies have had reverse effects.

He once again reiterate that the U.S. should decide for remaining committed to the details of talks and agreement if it wants return to the JCPOA.

Meanwhile Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Ms. Lozano pointed to the century-long relations between Iran and Switzerland and said that they have always had positive and constructive cooperation.

She then pointed to the roadmap of relation between Tehran and Bern and stipulated that her main program as the ambassador of Switzerland is to try to broaden relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Switzerland.

Lozano replaces former Swiss Ambassador Markus Leitner. Switzerland has helped Iran during the coronavirus era and it has been a channel for import of medicines.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Visiting Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis on Sunday said Iran and Switzerland have promoted mutual respect over the past 100 years.

Cassis, currently in Iran on a three-day visit which started from the ancient city of Isfahan on Saturday, made the remarks in a ceremony to celebrate the centenary of Switzerland’s diplomatic presence in Iran, Mehr News Agency (MNA) reported.

Switzerland have also been representing the US interest section in Iran since 1979, when Iran-US diplomatic ties were cut.

Addressing the ceremony, Cassis said, “Switzerland has maintained consular services with the Islamic Republic of Iran and delivered messages quickly and reliably in the past forty years. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your trust in Switzerland during these years.”

He noted that friendly and amicable ties between Switzerland and Iran date back to 1873 when the two countries signed an alliance of friendship and trade with each other.

“Switzerland was one of the first European countries that started trade ties with Iran, while the people and governments of the two countries already had a lot of respect for each other,” said the Swiss foreign minister.

He added that it took decades for official diplomatic relations to be established between Iran and Switzerland. Switzerland opened its consulate in Tehran on June 28, 1920, he said.

According to the schedule, the top Swiss diplomat is to meet President Hassan Rouhani, his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and other Iranian high-ranking officials Monday.

Swiss parliamentarians who are among Cassis’ entourage, are to hold talks with their Iranian counterparts.

Prior to the Swiss minister’s arrival, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh announced that Cassis and Iranian officials would not discuss Tehran-Washington tensions as the topics of their negotiations would be only about bilateral ties.
