Iran was ranked first among the world’s top steel producers in terms of production growth, followed by India, Germany, Russia, and the United States, IRNA reported, citing the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO).

Based on the report, Iran produced 5.3 million tons of crude steel during the mentioned two months.

According to IMIDRO’s estimations, the country’s crude steel production in February stood at 2.5 million tons which was also 3.7 percent higher than the same month in 2021.

Meanwhile, WSA stated that crude steel production by the world’s top 64 producers fell 5.5 percent to stand at 299.4 billion tons in the first two months of 2022.

During the mentioned period, China’s production declined by 10 percent, Brazil experienced negative growth of 5.8 percent, Turkey’s output declined by 5.7 percent, South Korea registered a negative 2.6 percent growth and Japan a negative 2.4 percent rise in steel production.

China, the world’s largest steel producer, produced 158 million tons of steel in the first two months of 2022, while the U.S. steel production reached 13.4 million tons, and Japan produced 15.1 million tons, India 20.9 million tons, South Korea 11.2 million tons, Germany 6.5 million tons, Turkey 6.1 million tons, Brazil 5.6 million tons and Russia produced 12.4 million tons of crude steel.

According to the World Steel Association, similar to the past two years, Iran has maintained its 10th place among the world’s top steel producers, after countries like China, India, Japan, and Russia.

The Iranian Steel industry has been constantly developing over the past years against all the pressures and obstacles created by external factors like the U.S. sanctions and the coronavirus outbreak that has severely affected the performance of the world’s top producers.

ISPA statistics show that in the same period last year, the figure stood at 13.89 million tons, IRNA reported.

During the six-month period to September 21, 2020, Iran produced 8.63 million tons of steel blooms and billets as well as 5.75 million tons of steel slabs, with the figures showing year-on-year growths of 13 percent and six percent respectively.

In the same time span last year, the figures stood at 7.67 million tons (billets and blooms) and 5.41 (slabs).

Steel products

In addition, this year, the country produced over 11 million tons of steel products, indicating an eight percent increase compared to that of the same duration last year, which stood at 10.17 million tons.

Earlier, the former caretaker of the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade, Jafar Sarqeyni, said the capacity of the country’s steel chain has reached 230 million tons in the current calendar year, from 123 million tons in 2013.

He noted, “Today, thanks to efforts by Iranian experts, Iran’s annual raw steel output stands at 37 million tons despite US cruel sanctions.”

According to ISPA figures in September, Iran produced over 9.6 million tons of steel ingots during March 20-August 21, showing a 19 percent increase compared to last year’s figure.

The production of steel ingots during the corresponding five-month period of last year amounted to 8.09 tons.

The report added that over 8.3 million tons of steel products were produced during the said period, indicating a 16 percent hike compared to the figure for the same period of the preceding year, which was 7.22 million tons.

Figures released by the World Steel Association (WSA) on August 24 showed that Iranian steelmakers produced over 16.2 million tons of crude steel during the first seven of 2020, marking a 10.7 percent rise compared to the figure for the same time span of 2019, which was 14.6 million tons.

Iran produced 2.3 million tons of crude steel in July, showing a 14.3 percent increase compared to the figure for the same month of 2019, which stood at 2.04 million tons.

Iran produced 31.9 million tons of crude steel in 2019, according to the WSA figures released in January.

The country plans to increase its annual steel production capacity to 55 million tons by 2025, with exports expected to reach between 10 million tons and 15 million tons per year.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – China was by far the top buyer of Iranian steel in the first five months of the current Iranian year (March 20-August 21), according to figures released by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).

Citing IRICA figures, IRNA said in a report that China was the top buyer of nearly $358 million worth of steel purchases from Iranian companies in the said period.

That amounted to nearly half of all Iranian steel shipments sent to Southeast Asia, said the report, adding that countries in the region received nearly 86 percent of all Iranian steel exports over the period, Press TV reported.

Total revenues generated from exports of metals and mining products reached $1.082 billion, from late March to late August, it said, adding that nearly half of all shipments were comprised of steel products.

Iran’s steel output in August surged by 14.6 percent compared to last year, to stand at 2.4 million metric tons, according to figures released by the World Steel Association. That was much higher than the average monthly growth seen in global steel production, which was around 0.6 percent.

Total steel output in Iran in the first eight months of 2020 increased by 11.3 percent, to reach 18.625 million tons, said the report by IRNA, citing World Steel figures.

The increased production and exports of steel in Iran has come despite sanctions imposed on the sector by the US which seeks to choke off the country’s lucrative trade of metals.

It also comes despite restrictive measures imposed on plants and mills since March to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

Iran Steel Exports Exceed 10m Tons Despite Sanctions

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – Head of Industrial Development and Renovation Organization of Iran (IDRO) says Iran has managed to export more than 10m tons of steel despite maximum sanctions.

Addressing the Iran Mine and Steel Conference in Tehran, Khodadad Gharibpour pointed to five stages of sanctions on steel industry which have been imposed by the U.S., adding that the sanctions on steel and minerals sectors were aimed at stopping Iran’s exports but they failed and despite their efforts, Iran’s steel exports have faced boom.

He went on to say that despite sanctions, it is expected that Iran’s steel exports would reach 4 to 5 billion dollars.

Gharibpour noted that this amount of exports shows that enemies have targeted Iran’s strong points because about 4 million people are involved in this industry and according to the 2025 Outlook Document it is expected the country to export 20m tons of steel ,and 25m tons of steel will be produced for domestic consumption.

He added that according to the assessments, steel industry is on the right track and this year the production capacity for steel will reach between 37 to 39 million tons and steel production will exceed 26m tons by the end of this year.

Gharibpour went on to say that the value of steel market capita is over 1.6 trillion tomans, adding that the value of shares of those companies listed in the stock market is over 280,000b tomans, admitting that the value of the sanctioned companies is over 1,000b dollars.

He also called for easing the ground for exports of steel products, noting that in case the ground is paved, the steel exports would increase significantly.

Meanwhile head of the conference Bahram Shakouri said that the normal steel consumption per capita is 240 kilograms in the world while the figure is 266 kilograms for Iran.

He also urged the ministry of industry, mine and trade to stay away from pricing in order that the private sector does its job based on the private sector policies.

He reiterated that if the steel chain management acts properly, the production capacity could reach 55m tons and the 2025 Outlook Document’s target will be materialized.

Shakouri also called for transfer of steel exports capacities to the shores as the country is struggling with the water shortage.

President Rouhani was in the Southeastern province of Kerman on Monday to green-light the start of production at Baft Steel, a mill located in a city with the same name.

The local news outlets said the mill has a total designed capacity of 800,000 tons a year for direct reduced iron (DRI), also called sponge iron, while it will produce a similar amount of crude steel, rising Iran steel output to a new amount.

It said construction for the mill started in 2017 and concurrent with a government initiative for fighting poverty and unemployment in Baft, a relatively poor region in Kerman, the province where some of Iran’s most precious metal reserves are located.

A total of 250 people will work at the mill and another 2,500 indirect jobs are expected on the supply and distribution chain.

More than €120 million have been spent on the project where construction has involved 50,000 tons of concrete pouring, 4,890 tons of steel structure and 7,641 tons of machinery installation, said the report, adding that the entire mill covers an area of 612 hectares to the Northwest of Baft.

The opening of the mill comes amid intensive efforts to tap into Iran’s massive deposits of metals as the government seeks to offset the impacts of the American sanctions on revenues derived from the sale of oil.

Iran is currently among the 10 leading producers of steel in the world. International surveys have shown that the growth of steel output in Iran for the past three years has outpaced a global rate of 3.5 percent. That has come despite a direct ban imposed by Washington on the country’s trade of metals since May this year.

Back in February, Iran started the construction for a giant steel mill in the country’s northwestern province of East Azerbaijan where a budget of 1.1 trillion rials ($26 million) had been allocated for the project by the private sector.

On January 26, the World Steel Association (WSA) announced that Iran ranked 10th among crude steel producers in the world in 2018 with 25 million tons of production, with a 17.72% rise compared with 2017.

Iran has pushed aside Italy, Taiwan, and Ukraine to become the 10th biggest producer of crude steel in the world for the year 2018.

The WSA has put the global crude steel production for the year 2018 at 1,808.6 million tons (Mt), which shows a 4.6% increase compared to 2017.

According to the report, Iran’s crude steel industry has remained in good shape despite the US sanctions.

Iran produced 25.0 Mt in 2018, showing a 17.72% increase compared to 2017 (21.2 Mt).

Iran’s share of global crude steel production has been estimated at 1.38% for the year 2018.

Based on the report, the second to ninth places went to India, Japan, the US, South Korea, Russia, Germany, Turkey and Brazil with 106.46 million tons, 104.33 million tons, 86.7 million tons, 72.46 million tons, 71.68 million tons, 42.44 million tons, 37.31 million tons and 34.73 million tons respectively.

According to the Islamic Republic’s Vision Plan, the country’s total steel production capacity is to hit 55 million tons a year by 2025, with exports figure expected to reach 10-15 million tons.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Jafar Sargheyni said on Sunday that sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran increased Iran’s steel exports volume in the international arena.

He pointed to the US failure in imposition of sanctions on Iran’s mineral industries and steel sector in the current year (started March 21, 2019) and said, “Iran’s steel exports volume to hit 12 million tons by the end of the current year (March 20, 2020).”

The US imposition of sanctions on Iran’s mineral sector has failed, he said, adding, “although the Minister of Industry had predicted that country’s steel exports volume will hit 10 million tons by yearend, statistics show that more than six million tons of steel has been exported in the first half of the current year (from March 21 to Sept. 22).”

Under such circumstances, Iran’s export volume of steel products will hit 12 million tons by the yearend, the deputy minister of industry added.

Sargheyni also revealed the exports growth of copper and added, “in tandem with the exports growth of steel, it is predicted that copper will register a 10 to 15 percent growth”

Totally, exports value of mines and mineral industries will hit $10 billion by the yearend, he stated.
