Iran exported 29,000 tons of medicinal, edible, decorative and industrial herbs and plants valued at over $49 million in the first three months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-July 21), a senior official at Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) said.

According to Mahmoud Bazari, director-general of TPO’s Export Coordination Office for agro crops and processing industry products, saffron accounted for 53 percent of the total value of the exports with 52 tons of the products worth $26 million exported in the first quarter of the current year.

Some 4,000 tons of teas worth four million dollars were also exported during this period, which compared to the same period last year increased by 728 percent in value and 642 percent in weight.

Saffron, licorice root and extract, cut flowers and flower buds, as well as other ornamental plants, medicinal plants, tea, and other products including fodder plants and industrial herbs, were among the items exported in this sector.

China, UAE, Spain, Pakistan, Iraq, and Germany were among the major export markets for these products in the mentioned period.

Based on the Iranian Vice Presidency for Science and Technology data, Iran earns some $500 million annually by exporting medicinal herbs, of which about $350 million is related to saffron and the rest is the share of other medicinal herbs.

Iran is one of the world’s top saffron producers and over 90 percent of its production is exported to foreign destinations.

Iranian saffron farmers exported 324.589 tons of products worth over $190 million to 60 foreign destinations during the previous Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20), according to the Spokesman of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) Rouhollah Latifi.

Based on a multilateral memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between Iran’s Planning and Budget Organization (PBO) and three of the country’s banks in early October 2020, 10 trillion rials (about $238.09 million) was allocated for supporting the saffron industry.

TEHRAN (Iran News)- A sum of 117.5 tons of exported saffron has been exploited from Khorassan Razavi province in the first half of the Iranian year (started March 21, 2019).

“This amount of exported saffron, the strategic product from Khorassan Razavi shows %1 growth compared to the same period last year,” Head of Khorassan Razavi Agriculture Jihad Organization Mohammad Reza Orani said on Wednesday.

Orani added that in the first half of last year, 115 tons of saffron produced in the province were exported to foreign countries.

The priceless plant was sent to more than 50 countries. Spain, Vietnam, Qatar and the UAE were Iran’s biggest saffron importers during last year.

Saffron is cultivated in 22 Iranian provinces, but Khorasan Razavi, North Khorasan and South Khorasan provinces in Eastern Iran account for almost 90 percent of the country’s total saffron output.

The saffron industry has created some 200,000 jobs along the pre-harvest, harvest, post-harvest, processing, sorting and packaging chain.

Last year the top export destination for Iranian saffron was the United Arab Emirates with $31.64 million, followed by China with $20 million, Spain with $16.54 million, Afghanistan with $9.74 million and Vietnam with $8.8 million.

About 236 tons of saffron worth more than $325 million were exported from Iran during the year to March 20, showing a growth of 56 percent compared to the figure for a year earlier.

Experts have long said Iran has to improve marketing and find new customers if it wants to secure a bigger slice of the profits from saffron sales.

Bulk production methods in Iran bring in less than what is paid in countries such as Spain which re-exports the Iranian produce.

Saffron from Spain reportedly sells for €1,400 ($1,861) a kilogram in Europe, but Iranian varieties command a quarter or less that price.

“Countries like Spain, while being a major importer of saffron from our country, are among the largest exporters of this product in the world,” said the Head of Agriculture, Water and Food Industries Commission with Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture Kaveh Zargaran in June.
