No Disruption in Iran-Russia Trade During 12-Day War

TEHRAN (Iran News) Speaking to ILNA, Tizhoush Taban explained that field surveys conducted in Astara, a key border city central to Iran’s trade with Russia, confirmed that commercial exchanges between the two countries remained stable throughout the conflict period. “There was no meaningful change in trade volumes during the war,” he said, emphasizing that goods and commercial products continued to be exported and imported as usual, both during and after the conflict.

Highlighting the resilience of economic ties, Tizhoush Taban noted that Iran and Russia enjoy a strong relationship supported by significant economic agreements. “Iran’s participation in organizations like BRICS and the Eurasian Economic Union underlines the depth of these relations,” he added. Consequently, neither the outbreak of hostilities nor the subsequent ceasefire had a major effect on bilateral trade.

Regarding the volume of trade in spring 2025, Tizhoush Taban cited official data from the Astara Customs Office. Between March 20 and June 20, Iran exported approximately 274,070 tons of goods, valued at over $145 million, through Astara’s rail and road customs facilities. This represents an 18% increase in export volume compared to the same period last year. The exported goods were destined not only for Russia but also for countries including Azerbaijan, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan.

On the import side, Iran brought in about 54,910 tons of goods worth around $44.6 million via Astara’s rail, road, and sea customs points. However, this figure shows a 36% decrease in import volume compared to spring 2024. These imports came mainly from Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Switzerland, Belarus, and other countries.

Tizhoush Taban stressed that, despite the decline in import volumes, there is no fundamental issue affecting trade between Iran and Russia. “We have not faced specific problems in this area,” he emarked. He also mentioned that air shipments to Russia, which had been temporarily disrupted, are expected to return to normal with the resumption of flights. “Iran-Russia ”

Overall, the data indicate that Iran’s trade with Russia remains resilient even in the face of regional tensions, backed by deep-rooted economic cooperation and strategic agreements. According to Tizhoush Taban, official foreign trade statistics are regularly published by the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration and can be accessed through its website.

The report concludes that while external conflicts may pose challenges, the solid trade infrastructure and diplomatic ties between Iran and Russia continue to support stable and, in some areas, growing economic exchanges.

Iran-Russia Trade Reshaping: $6 Billion Trade Target Not Out of Reach

TEHRAN (Iran News) According to IRNA, Gdari noted that Iran’s exports to Russia totaled about $500 million in the last three years, but this figure has more than doubled in this period — a growth unprecedented in any other trade partner. This development indicates a fundamental shift in Iran’s trade relations with Russia.

Historically, agricultural products formed the bulk of Iran’s exports to Russia. However, Gdari pointed out that the export basket has diversified. Today, alongside agricultural goods, industrial products are also being exported. For example, car parts exports increased from $13 million to $67 million in 2023, with a growth rate of over 100% last year. On the import side, Russia has become a key supplier of livestock-related products, timber, and wood.

Gdari emphasized that both countries’ traders are increasingly active at international trade fairs, which positively impacts trade volume. Moreover, he highlighted that after the Iran-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement, 87% of tariff codes for export goods became duty-free, significantly boosting trade. Previously, some products lacked competitive advantage, but the agreement’s implementation is expected to substantially increase bilateral trade, with a realistic target of reaching $6 billion — provided that infrastructure issues like banking and logistics are addressed.”Iran-Russia”

He pointed out that positive agreements in logistics and banking sectors foster optimism about rapid trade growth. The range of exportable goods has expanded, and the mutual recognition of standards is expected to further facilitate trade, especially in pharmaceuticals and medical equipment.

Gdari also revealed that Iran and Russia now have about 5,500 tariff-free product codes. Key sectors benefiting from this include clothing, construction materials, and knowledge-based products, which are likely to enter the commercial cycle soon. He stressed that aligning Russia’s standards with Iran’s could accelerate trade growth further and ease exports of medicines and medical devices.

In summary, the ongoing structural changes, combined with mutual standard recognition and improved infrastructure, position Iran and Russia on a pathway toward reaching a $6 billion trade volume — a goal that now seems attainable with concerted efforts.

As the portal of the Iranian Oil Ministry Shana reported, the country’s Oil Minister Javad Oji, who visited Moscow on top of a high-ranking delegation to attend the mentioned international event, met with senior Russian officials to discuss developing energy cooperation between the two countries.

In a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak on Wednesday, the two sides discussed ways to develop relations in various fields of oil, gas, and petrochemical industries, and explored ways of implementing bilateral contracts and signing new economic cooperation documents.

Speaking in this meeting, Oji said the relations between Iran and Russia have entered a new phase and the two countries are determined to develop and deepen relations in all areas.

The official pointed to the Rasht-Astara railway line, which is part of the International North-South Transit Corridor (INSTC), as one of the most important projects being implemented between Iran and Russia and said: “With the completion of this railway, the North-South intercontinental corridor will be completed and the volume of economic and transit exchanges between the two countries will increase significantly.”

Later that day, in his address to the 6th Russian Energy Week International Forum, Oji welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s remarks on increasing energy exchanges between the two countries.

Later on Thursday, Iran’s Institute for International Energy Studies (IIES) and Russia’s Roscongress Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on bilateral research cooperation in the oil and gas industry.

The MOU was signed by Mohammad Sadeq Jokar, the IIES head, and Alexander Stuglev, the Roscongress Foundation CEO, on the sidelines of the Russian Energy Week Forum.

Based on the MOU, the two research centers will jointly study proposed projects for energy cooperation between Iran and Russia as the first step and will announce whether a project is feasible and beneficial.

The energy officials of the two countries also discussed the expansion of cooperation in the petrochemical sector on the sidelines of the mentioned forum, as the two nations are joining forces to neutralize the negative impacts of the U.S. sanctions on their oil industries.

In this regard, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister Ahmad Asadzadeh, who accompanied Oji on his visit to Russia, told the press that Iranian knowledge-based companies exported over $9.0 billion worth of petrochemical catalysts to Russia in the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-September 22).

According to Asadzadeh, Iran exported $8.0 billion of such catalysts to Russia in the previous Iranian year, and the current year’s figures indicate an upward trend for the cooperation between the two countries in this field.

TEHRAN (Iran News) –Russia’s Space Corporation, on Thursday, said it signed memorandums with two Iranian companies on launch services, Anadolu News Agency reports.

“As a result of international events, conferences and exhibitions organised with the participation of Roscosmos and enterprises of the rocket and space industry … Memorandums of cooperation in the field of launch services were signed with the Iranian companies SAHAB and SpaceOmid”, a Roscosmos statement said.

Last month, Roscosmos had said that a delegation from the Corporation was taking part in the 11th Iranian International Air Show, during which the delegation planned to hold a series of meetings with Iranian officials, as well as representatives of other “friendly countries”.

In August 2022, Roscosmos said that it launched Iran’s Khayyam satellite, named after the 11th Century Persian poet and philosopher, Omar Khayyam, into orbit from the Baikonur spaceport in southern Kazakhstan.

Roscosmos Director-General, Yury Borisov described the launch of the Iranian satellite as a milestone event in Russian-Iranian cooperation.

Meanwhile on Wednesday President Ebrahim Raisi hailed Iran’s achievements in the space industry, saying the rapid progress in the field has proved the failure of Western sanctions and plots to isolate the Islamic Republic.

Raeisi made the remarks in an address to the second meeting of the country’s Supreme Space Council in the capital Tehran.

Regarding the achievements made in the space industry, the president noted that Iran was one of the few countries that achieved the technology of launching spacecraft.

“Further progress by the country in the field of placing satellites into the Earth’s orbit would neutralize the enemies’ plots in the area of broadcasting anti-Iranian television and satellite channels,” he stated.

Iran launched its first satellite Omid (Hope) in 2009 and its Rasad (Observation) satellite was sent into orbit in 2011.

In 2012, Iran successfully put its third domestically-made satellite, Navid (Good News), into orbit.

In April 2020, the country announced the successful launch of its first military satellite into orbit. And in March 2022, it blasted its second military satellite into space.

The president also pointed to the enemy’s efforts to portray Iran’s space achievements as limited to military purposes. Raisi said the space industry is among the country’s assets and also among the propelling industries, whose advancement alongside other industries and sciences, would contribute to the enhancement of the country’s overall strength.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he added, “Space sciences and industries are, today, one of the world’s booming economic and commercial arenas,” expressing the necessity of “commercialization of this science and industry.”

Also during the meeting, Hassan Salarieh, Head of Iran’s Space Organization, announced the approval of the country’s strategic 10-Year Space Program by the Supreme Space Council.

In line with the program’s scope, the Islamic Republic plans to become the regional epicenter of development of space technologies, and provider of space launch services.

The Iranian program also aims to devise and implement space missions in line with its goal of helping civilian, business, and executive organizations benefit from the world’s state-of-the-art technologies.

Meanwhile on Thursday Advisor to Supreme Leader for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati in a meeting with former deputy Speaker of Russia’s State Duma Sergey Baburin termed the relations between Iran and Russia as very important.

“Relations between Iran and Russia are currently at the best level and developing,” said Velayati, adding that the relations between the two countries are very important.

Referring to the Ukrainian war, he called the US and NATO as the main causes of the spread of the conflict. “Today’s world is no longer unipolar, and it is very important for independent countries to be careful of their [U.S. and NATO] influence in the region.

Velayati also pointed to the South Caucasus region, saying, “As the Leader of the Islamic Revolution emphasized, the Islamic Republic of Iran does not accept any changes in the current borders and the security of the region must be preserved.”

Baburin, for his part, called the purpose of his visit to Iran to participate in the international meeting of the anniversary martyrdom of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.

He said that Soleimani was indeed a very important and influential figure. “He is known as a hero in Russia and Iran, and it is clear to the whole world that the United States committed this terrorist act, and the Americans, including Trump, have admitted this many times.”

Baburin emphasized the ineffectiveness of the US sanctions, saying that Russia can use Iran’s experience in the issue of neutralizing sanctions, and the cooperation between Iran, Russia, and Syria is a valuable basis for the multipolar world.

“The relations between Iran and Russia are friendly and close,” he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – An advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei defends the country’s ‘Look to the East’ policy and hails growing cooperation among Iran, Russia and China as three independent powers standing against America’s agenda of expansionism.

In an interview with the office of Ayatollah Khamenei’s website, Ali Akbar Velayati, referred to a decades-long record of America’s ill-intention in dealing with the Iranian nation and explained why the Islamic Republic should not count on the West and work instead to strengthen ties with the Easterners, with which it shares many commonalities.

The veteran politician recalled the former Pahlavi monarch’s confession to Washington’s refusal to stand by its own puppet regime in Iran prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Washington and its Western partners, he added, then moved to provide all-out support to the ex-Iraqi regime’s eight war on Iran and impose draconian sanctions aimed at bringing the Islamic Republic to its knees.

Even when Iran and the U.S. reached a nuclear deal in 2015, Washington went on to ditch that agreement “without any justification” and openly showed enmity toward the Iranian nation, Velayati said.

In turn, the European states are increasingly submissive to U.S. policies and unconditionally follow in its footsteps in foreign policy, according to Velayati.

On the contrary, he said, Russia and China offered Iran a helping hand in tough times.

“Under such circumstances, how is it that some simple-minded people argue that we should turn to the West? Which West?! The ones that have constantly been spreading fake propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran, exert political pressure on it, and leave no stone unturned to undermine the Islamic Republic under US pressure and based on the sheer lies of Zionist hawkers,” he said.

The former Iranian foreign minister said the reason behind Iran’s inclination toward Russia and China is that the three states engage in interactions when it comes to cooperation and offering assistance to one another.

The three powers work together based on a set of shared goals, the official said.

All the three are standing against the US and Western hegemony against the East, while they are independent and do not rely on any outsider, said Velayati.

“The three countries have the support of their nation.”

Velayati was also asked for his views on a trilateral summit between Iran, Russia and Turkey held recently in Tehran, with the presence of Russian and Turkish Presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on the Syria peace process.

Following U.S. President Joe Biden’s “fruitless and abortive” visit to Israel and Saudi Arabia, the Tehran summit “sent an important message and showed that ties among Iran, Russia and Turkey are original in nature and are growing.”

He said visiting U.S. presidents usually look down on regional nations arrogantly.

“It was clear from the start that [Biden’s visit] will be fruitless since [US presidents] have not been successful in shaking the nations down,” he said.

On the contrary, in the Tehran summit, “no country gave orders to others, but the three cooperate with one another while [preserving] their dignity and power,” he said.

Velayati also enumerated Washington’s failed attempts to advance its agenda in the West Asia and elsewhere in the continent, namely Iraq, Afghanistan, Gaza, Yemen, and Syria.

In the case of Syria, the Western states, along with some “uninformed” regional states, mobilized all their resources to eliminate Syria from the regional resistance axis and turn it into a country similar to Libya, but to no avail.

He slammed the U.S. military’s continued occupation of resource-rich regions of eastern Syria.

“The presence of enemies on a country’s soil in anyway is condemned. We will see that the struggles of the Syrian nation and government will eventually force America to leave these regions,” he said.

The Leader’s aide also pointed to Ayatollah Khamenei’s warning for Turkey not to launch a military operation in northern Syria, saying such military action will naturally draw a response from the Syrian army.

Such a military operation “will not only fail to put out the fire of war but will instead fan the flames,” he said.

Velayati said Russia decided to wage war on Ukraine only when NATO reneged on its promises to the ex-Soviet Union that there would be buffer zone between their borders.

He pointed to Ukraine’s inclination toward the Western military alliance and a 2014 coup in the country, which toppled a legitimate government and installed instead a pro-West administration there.

Russia has repeatedly said that NATO reaching its borders was a redline.
