TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali has met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov to discuss the need to expand mutual cooperation in various fields.

The two sides explored avenues for bolstering and reinvigorating bilateral ties in different areas, Fars News reported. They also exchanged views on developments in West Asia, and the Persian Gulf region, including Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Iraq.

The meeting was held on Wednesday concurrently with another meeting between the Head of Iran’s Supreme Council of World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought Ali Qazi Asgar and Interim Head of Russian Federation Muftis Council Demir Mohyeddinev. The two sides agreed to broaden the level of cooperation on Islamic unity.

In the meeting held at the Headquarters of the Russian Federation Muftis Council in Moscow in the presence of the Head of Moscow Islamic Center Saber Akbari Jeddi, and the Iranian Embassy’s Cultural Attaché Masood Ahmadvand, Demir Mohyeddinev said that the Shia and Sunni Russian Muslims enjoy peaceful coexistence, IRNA reported.

He added that one of the major objectives of the Russian Federation Muftis Council is the establishment and strengthening of strong friendly ties among the entire world Muslims.

The Head of Supreme Council of World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought Ali Qazi Asgar, too, said that during the years of serving as the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei at the Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization he had close cooperation with the Russian Federation Muftis Council on satisfactory performance of the Hajj pilgrimage and the affairs related to that great Islamic annual gathering.

The Islamic societies around the globe have lots of commonalities, such as the glorious Qur’an and the Hajj pilgrimage rituals, which can serve as the foundation stones for their proximity, and the Supreme Leader’s approach on interactions among world Muslims is based on the same principle, said Qazi Asgar, according to IRNA.

Raisi, Putin hold phone talks

Also on Wednesday, Iranian President Ayatollah Seyed Ebrahim Raisi spoke over the phone with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Speaking with the Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday evening by telephone, Ayatollah Raisi described the development of relations with Russia as an important priority of the Islamic Republic’s foreign policy.

“We are looking for ways to remove the obstacles in the development of relations and opening new doors, and we are determined to increase the volume of bilateral trade with Russia,” according to a statement by the Iranian presidency.

Emphasizing that Iran is determined to promote friendly and comprehensive relations between the two countries in a way that will become a successful model for non-neighboring relations, the president added, “We have a serious will to finalize the comprehensive document of Iran-Russia cooperation as soon as possible.”

Raisi thanked Moscow for its initiative to launch the process of Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and described it as a step towards strengthening very close relations between the two countries.

The Iranian president thanked Russia for its cooperation in preventing the outbreak of coronavirus and for the effort to jointly produce the COVID-19 vaccine, stating, “Iran is requesting to receive more shipments of the COVID-19 vaccine due to the current special circumstances.”

Ayatollah Raisi added, “As a party to international treaties such as the NPT, the Islamic Republic of Iran is serious about enforcing the rights of its people in the field of peaceful nuclear activities and enjoying the benefits and achievements of this technology in all peaceful fields.”

He said, “The United States intends to use its political and media games to stand as a plaintiff instead of a criminal, and instead of being accountable for violating its promises and oppressive and illegal actions, put Iran in that position.”

Referring to the developments in Afghanistan, Ayatollah Raisi said, “The establishment of security and peace in Afghanistan has always been emphasized by the Islamic Republic and we believe that all active Afghan groups should work together to establish stability in the country as soon as possible, and turn the U.S. withdrawal a turning point for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan.”

Expressing readiness for any cooperation for the establishment of peace and security in Afghanistan, President Raisi said, “The successful experience of Iran-Russia cooperation in the fight against takfiri terrorism in Syria has opened new windows for the two sides to increase Tehran-Moscow interaction.”

The Russian president, for his part, pointed out that the development of relations with Iran is of great importance to Russia, adding, “The remarks of Iran’s Supreme Leader, who said that the high level of mutual trust and high economic capacity in the two countries can lead to tangible results in the bilateral fields, is well etched in my memory.”

Putin added, “Through the speaker of the Russian Duma, who met with Your Excellency on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony, I was informed of the offer to conclude a comprehensive agreement on bilateral cooperation, and I welcome and support this positive initiative.”

Referring to the ongoing process of delivering the corona vaccine to Iran, Putin stated, “The delivery of the corona vaccine to Iran will accelerate from September.”

Referring to the Vienna nuclear talks, the Russian president also stated, “The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) could not be held hostage to problems not related to the nuclear deal.”

In the end, the two presidents expressed hope that they would meet on the sidelines of the Shanghai pact in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and discuss more detailed issues of interest.

In the meeting that ambassadors from 28 Islamic countries were present participants discussed the need to strengthen ties between Islamic countries in each other in various fields.

Addressing the meeting, the President of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov noted that relations with Islamic countries are one of the priorities of Russia’s foreign policy, saying, “Tatarstan is ready to cooperate with member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in various fields such as oil, machine building, truck production, and agricultural products.”

In his speech at the meeting, Kazem Jalali, Iran’s ambassador to Russia, pointed to the growing relations between Iran and Russia, expressing hope that in the new Iranian under the presidency of Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, the relations between the two countries will become stronger.

Jalali stated that Vladimir Putin was the first world leader to send a congratulatory message to the elected president of Iran, adding, “This shows the serious will and determination of the Russian Federation to further expand relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Referring to Raisi’s visit to the Republic of Tatarstan in recent years, Jalali also praised the relations between Tehran and the Republic of Tatarstan and said that the Republic of Tatarstan has a proud history.

“We are happy that it is now a platform for cooperation between Islamic countries,” the ambassador highlighted.

On June 18, Raisi won a landslide victory in Iran’s presidential elections. After Raisi’s triumph, Maxim Suslov, the press attache of the Russian embassy in Tehran, transmitted a message from President Vladimir Putin congratulating Raisi on his win and pledging to strengthen Russia-Iran bilateral relations.

Boris Dolgov, an expert at Moscow’s Institute of Oriental Studies, predicted that Raisi will expand economic and political cooperation with Russia.

Vladimir Sazhin, a senior fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies, noted that “Russia will undoubtedly be included in the list of Iran’s priority partners,” but acknowledged that Russia and Iran will maintain a situational partnership.

In April 2017, Raisi held a meeting with Tatarstan’s President Rustam Minnikhanov, who is a key surrogate for Putin’s foreign policy in the Islamic world, and praised Iran’s commitment to strengthening its relationships with Russia and Tatarstan.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – In a phone talk between Iranian envoy to Moscow Kazem Jalali and Deputy Minister of Energy Anatoly Tikhonov, the two sides discussed expansion of mutual economic ties under the coronavirus pandemic.

Both sides underscored two countries’ vitality of development of bilateral economic ties as well as the implementation of the inked mutual agreements.

Tehran and Moscow agreed to continue talks to make a final decision about setting a date for holding joint economic ties under the outbreak.

The Russian side voiced readiness for the removal of barriers on the way of improving common economic ties.

Back on May 8, Jalali and Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov in a telephone conversation on Thu. explored the avenues for bolstering regional and international cooperation. The two sides also discussed important issues such as illegal US attempts for extending Iran’s arms embargo, nuclear activity and cooperation of Iran with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Iran and Russia are boosting ties under the pandemic. Russia is one of the most serious critics of US anti-Iranian policies.

It has reacted sarcastically to the US allegations of Moscow’s support for JCPOA and prevention from the extension of Iran’s arms embargo.

Russia says it may commence talks with the Islamic Republic over selling weaponry to the country after the removal of Iran’s arms embargo, i.e. October 2020.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov said the trade turnover between Russia and Iran is rising despite the challenging external conditions.

The Russian official noted that the trade turnover increased to $2b last year, TASS reported on Tuesday.

Trade relations between the two countries increased after anti-Iran sanctions were removed as a result of the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers.

However, the United States’ unilateral pullout from the nuclear deal in 2018 and the reimposition of sanctions against Iran have created obstacles in the way of expansion of trade ties between Iran and Russia.

Russia, as one of the signatories to the nuclear deal, has repeatedly denounced the US illegal sanctions against Iran and has tried to continue its economic relations with Tehran.

Morgulov said the two countries’ trade turnover amounted to $1.74b in 2018 and $1.58b in the period between January and September 2019.

Agriculture products are the backbone of the trade between Tehran and Moscow. Trade turnover in the agriculture sector amounted to 1.28b in the period between January and September 2019, an increase of 41.6% year-on-year.

Russia’s exports to Iran include machinery, steel, wagons, wood, vegetable oil, corn, barley, red meat, and other goods, while its imports from Iran are mostly dairy products, vegetables, and fruits.

“We hope that the temporary agreement, which is aimed at creation of a free trade zone between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), will give an extra impetus to the expansion of ties,” Morgulov said, adding that the agreement “was enforced last October.”

After several years of negotiations, Iran and the EEU reached a free trade agreement in early 2019, which came into force in late October.

Based on this agreement, about 840 commodity items are subject to preferential tariffs, which means tariffs on some goods are reduced and for some commodities, tariffs are levied.

Iran is a very important market in the region and the development of ties with this country is of high significance for the EEU members.

Signing the free trade agreement between Iran and this union has laid the ground for the expansion of trade ties between the two sides.

Iran said in February that its trade volume with the union surpassed $1 billion since the implementation of the agreement between the two sides.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Tehran’s Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanayee said both the Iranian and Russian nations can get closer to each other by expanding their media cooperation and exchanges.

“Iranians and Russians still need more understanding of each other and media cooperation will be useful in this regard,” Sanayee said on Monday, addressing Iran-Russia media committee meetings.

The Iranian ambassador to Russia noted that Tehran and Moscow are still working on further expanding of bilateral relations, and said, “Various committees have been formed in different fields over the last few years to achieve these objectives.”

Despite the fact that Iran and Russia enjoy good governmental relations, it is still necessary to develop ties between the two countries’ non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Sanayee added.

The second meeting of Iran-Russia Media Cooperation Committee was held on Monday in Moscow in the presence of Sanayee, deputy minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance along with a number of media representatives in both countries.

The two sides discussed the achievements of the agreements reached in the first meeting of the Media Cooperation Committee.

In a relevant development in late June, Sanayee stressed the high importance of cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in international arrangements and developments.

“Cooperation between Iran and Russia is effective in the new regional and international arrangements and the new global order will be influenced by the two countries’ cooperation,” Sanayee said in Russia, addressing the 3rd round of specialized talks between Iran and Russia.

“I believe that the ‘East’ policy will be strengthened in the world and international developments will move ahead in a way that importance of cooperation between Iran and Russia will increase,” he added.

In relevant remarks in January, Sanayee said that Tehran-Moscow ties became stronger and bilateral relations increased after the two countries saw common interests in regional and international developments.

He described the development of Iran-Russia political and security relations after the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as unparalleled, adding that the bilateral ties have yet to use all the potentials to further develop.

Sanayee first addressed the latest status of relations between Iran and Russia in political, economic and cultural fields, saying relations between the two countries have undergone a major transformation as a result of the growth of mutual needs and regional conditions.

According to Sanayee, since the signing of the 2015 nuclear deal also known as the JCPOA, economic relations between Iran and Russia have multiplied, but the developing relations have yet to reach the desired levels using potentials.

The Iranian diplomat also hailed Iran’s cultural activities in Russia. Meanwhile, he described the development of Iran-Russia political, security relations as unparalleled.

The two countries’ common approaches and perspectives towards global trends and shared regional interests, especially in relation to the Middle East developments, were the most important force behind the development of political relations between the two countries, according to the Iranian ambassador.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Islamic Republic of Iran Levan Dzhagaryan said on Sunday that Iran-Russia relations and cooperations do not need the US’ permission.

Naming his country independent, in an interview with the Press TV, the envoy underlined that Russia does not need the permission of the US or any other country for continuing ties with Iran.

He evaluated Iran-Russia future relations positive saying that “the Presidents of the two countries will regularly meet each other on various occasions and discuss different issues.”

“Fortunately, we are witnessing various mutual agreements signed on economy, politics, and culture,” he added.

Addressing the probable measure of the US and its allies for referring Iran’s file to the UN Security Council, Dzhagaryan said “Russia, China, and other European countries will try to prevent this negative scenario. The whole world knows that this treaty is in jeopardy, and the only country responsible for the disaster is the US. We condemn the US’ withdrawal from this international agreement. The Americans violated international law in this respect, and Iran was forced to take required action because it had no other choice. The JCPOA provided no interests for Iran.”

The Russian ambassador reiterated that his country will continue its cooperation with Iran on the construction of nuclear sites in Bushehr as well as other projects including electrification of Garmsar-Incheboroun railway, establishment of a thermal power plant in Hormozgan province and etc.

Rejecting the US statements claiming that Iran-China-Russia cooperation will ignite another war in the region, he said: “they are baseless accusations since it was the US who led Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan into wars.”

“I suggest Americans to have a look back to their measures in the past years to find out which country puts regional security at risk,” he added.

“A feasibility study is currently being prepared on the creation of the Azerbaijan-Russia-Iran ‘North-South’ energy corridor. All of these works expand our cooperation in the energy sector,” Sputnik news agency reported.

At the same time, the minister noted that the energy systems of Azerbaijan and Russia operate in a parallel mode and the electricity exchange is underway. The three wheeled cooperation of Azerbaijan-Russia-Iran will contribute to the energy economy of Iran’s north region.

“So, in 2018, more than 121 million kWh of electricity was exported from Azerbaijan to Russia, and over 76 million kWh of electricity was imported from Russia,” Mustafayev said.

Russia’s System Operator and power company Rosseti, Azerbaijan’s Azerenerji and Iran’s Tavanir (Iran Power Generation and Transmission Company) are parties to the agreement.
