TEHRAN (Iran News) – Stating that Iran considers Russia as one of its main partners in the military and defense field, Khatibzadeh said that two countries can boost partnership as the UN arms embargo imposed on Tehran is now lifted.

In an interview with Sputnik, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh elaborated that Iran considers Russia as one of its main partners in the military and defense field, noting that the two countries can boost partnership as the UN arms embargo imposed on Tehran is now lifted.

“Over recent years, Russia has been one of Iran’s main partners in the defense and military fields. Now, with the lifting of arms restrictions, the two countries can enhance the prospects for military cooperation,” Khatibzadeh said.

“Negotiations between Tehran and Moscow are ongoing within the framework of a joint commission for military cooperation. Partnership programs between the two countries’ authorities are developed through it, including those related to regional and international issues,” the spokesman added.

Any arms purchase from “friendly countries” will depend on the basic needs of Iran, the spokesman said, emphasizing that Tehran can obtain any kind of weapons and necessary equipment — “from any source” — without legal restrictions and only on the basis of its defense needs.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Khatibzadeh said that any US attempt to impose unilateral restrictions on Iran would breach the international law and be bound to fail.

“The sanctions-addicted United States is not far to once again compensate for some of its blatant failures in the [United Nations] Security Council and its inability to reimpose previous sanctions that ended following the nuclear agreement and the UNSC 2231 Resolution,” Khatibzadeh said.

“It is clear that any US attempt to introduce its unilateral steps [sanctions] violates international law and is doomed to fail”, the spokesman added.

Khatibzadeh continued on by saying that Iran does not favor any US presidential candidate and sees the upcoming vote as an internal matter for Washington.

“Tehran has repeatedly announced in regard with the outcome of the US presidential election that it does not prefer one candidate over another and considers this issue as an internal matter,” he said.

Foreign Ministry spokesman also expressed the belief that Riyadh was provoking regional tensions and giving its resources to the US presidential administration, but noted that Tehran would still welcome the neighbor “with open arms” if it changed its policy.

“Unfortunately, Riyadh has given its prestige and resources to the [US President Donald] Trump administration and has taken the wrong path provoking war, bloodshed and imposing a blockade on the regional countries, including Yemen and Qatar”, Khatibzadeh said.

“In the case if Riyadh takes the decision to ease tensions in the region and moves forward in this direction, Iran will welcome it with open arms”, the spokesman added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow will resume its military cooperation with Tehran following the termination of the UN Security Council’s arms restrictions against Iran.

“Russia is not afraid of US sanctions because it is accustomed to them,” Ryabkov said, according to the TASS news agency on Sunday.

He added that Russia is developing multi-aspect cooperation with Iran and “cooperation in the military-technical sphere will proceed depending on needs of the parties and mutual readiness to such cooperation in a calm fashion.”

The Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran released a statement on Sunday, announcing the official termination of UN Security Council provisions on arms restrictions and travel ban.

The Foreign Ministry said October 18 is “a momentous day for the international community,” praising the world for standing with Tehran “in defiance of the US regime’s efforts.”

The administration of US President Donald Trump suffered an embarrassing loss on August 14 as it failed to renew the Iranian arms embargo through a resolution at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Russia and China voted against the motion and the remaining 11 council members, including France, Germany and the UK, abstained.

Tehran Defence Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami is in Moscow to sit down with his Russian counterpart and a number of other high-profile military officials, Jalali further said, according to Sputnik News.

General Hatami will take part in the International Military-Technical Forum ‘Army-2020’ at the invitation of his Russian counterpart.

Jalali on to praise the Kremlin’s efforts to defend the upcoming removal of a ban on weapons sales to Iran, which is set to expire in October.

“(By voting down the US resolution on continuing the ban, Russia) showed that it opposes illegal and futile actions by the United States,” he said.

The UN Security Council almost unanimously refused last week to support a US-sponsored draft resolution on extending the arms embargo against Iran, which is due to expire in October under the JCPOA.

During the 15-member Security Council vote, the US received support only from the Dominican Republic for its anti-Iran resolution, leaving it far short of the minimum nine “yes” votes required for adoption.

Russia and China, both veto-wielding powers and parties to the JCPOA, voted against the draft resolution and the remaining 11 Security Council members, including France, Germany and Britain, abstained.
