Iran–Qatar 11th Joint Economic Commission to Convene in Tehran in February

TEHRAN (Iran News) Abbas Aliabadi conveyed the message on the occasion of Qatar National Day in a letter addressed to Saad bin Abdullah Al-Mahmoud, Qatar’s ambassador to Tehran. In his message, Aliabadi congratulated the Qatari government and people and emphasized that Qatar’s National Day symbolizes not only the establishment of the modern Qatari state but also the country’s firm determination toward progress, human dignity, and regional and international engagement.

The message reads: “On behalf of the people and government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, I extend heartfelt congratulations on the National Day of the State of Qatar and wish the best for the brotherly nation of Qatar. This auspicious day is not merely a date on the calendar; it represents the spirit of national self-confidence that has transformed Qatar into one of the influential players on the international stage in recent decades.

“Qatar has managed to combine its Arab traditions with a modern vision, presenting a distinguished model of effective governance, targeted investment, and active diplomacy. The country’s initiatives in mediation, humanitarian relief, and regional diplomacy have reinforced its position as a significant international actor.”

Aliabadi highlighted that Iran and Qatar are currently experiencing an “exceptional period of constructive engagement, mutual trust, and expanding cooperation,” strengthened by cultural, religious, and historical ties as well as close political, security, and economic coordination across the Persian Gulf.

He pointed to recent high-level exchanges, including the visit of Iran’s President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian to Qatar in October 2024 and the visit of Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to Iran in March 2025, as indicators of the depth and breadth of bilateral relations.

Trade between the two countries has also grown significantly. According to Aliabadi, bilateral trade rose from $200 million in 2023 to $310 million in 2024. In the first six months of 2025, trade reached $168 million, marking an 18% increase compared with the same period the previous year. He emphasized that this upward trend reflects the determination of both governments to deepen economic ties.

“Although the current level of economic cooperation is satisfactory, we believe there remain substantial untapped capacities. With the efforts of officials in both countries and the targets set, we hope to further expand our commercial and economic relations,” Aliabadi stated.

He confirmed that, with prior coordination, the 11th Joint Economic Commission will convene in early February in Tehran, adding that the meeting is expected to open “new avenues of cooperation” between the two nations.

Aliabadi concluded by noting that Qatar National Day is an occasion not only to honor the country’s history and achievements but also to reflect on new partnership opportunities. He emphasized that the world today is more in need than ever of regional cooperation, joint initiatives, and full utilization of economic and human capacities for a more secure and prosperous future.

He reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to expand comprehensive cooperation with Qatar in all mutually agreed fields, and once again congratulated Qatar’s Emir, government, and people, wishing them continued success, peace, and prosperity.

The MOUs were endorsed by Iranian Minister of Transport and Urban Development Rostam Qasemi and Qatar’s Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti in Iran’s southern Kish Island on Monday, IRNA reported.

The documents included an agreement previously approved by Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi during his visit to Qatar, as well as, three cooperation MOUs on air transportation, an MOU on maritime transportation, and a document on cooperation regarding Qatar World Cup 2022.

As reported, the maritime agreement was signed by the heads of the two countries’ maritime organizations.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaiti arrived on Kish Island on Sunday to hold talks with his Iranian counterpart.

During the talks, the two sides discussed cooperation in a variety of areas including collaboration in free trade zones and also finalized some previously reached agreements on economic cooperation.

During his meeting with Qasemi, Al Sulaiti also expressed his country’s willingness for the expansion of maritime ties with Iran’s southern coastal provinces.

He stressed that Iran is one of the most important and influential countries in the region, saying: “The World Cup 2022 is not exclusive to Qatar and we intended to use the capacities of all countries in the region in this regard.”

Qasemi for his part referred to the signing of 14 MOUs between the two countries during the visit of President Raisi to Doha, and stressed: “[implementing] the memorandum of understanding on maritime cooperation between the two countries and the facilitation of trade and tourism are among the most important issues currently discussed.”

Stating that the coastal provinces of Iran can have extensive trade with Qatari ports, the official added that the International Imam Khomeini port in Khuzestan province can be a great source and destination of trading goods with Qatar.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian and Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida al-Kaabi held an online meeting to discuss linking the two countries’ electricity grids via the sea.

During the online meeting, the two sides also discussed a regional initiative for developing cooperation in the field of unconventional water resources, including seawater desalination and the use of treated wastewater, according to news.moe.gov.ir.

Connecting the two countries’ electricity networks was discussed and approved at a recent meeting of the Regional Centre on Urban Water Management (RCUWM), hosted by Tehran.

In this regard, Al-Kaabi announced his country’s readiness for participating in this initiative and suggested that regular meetings would be held in the region’s countries so that experts could exchange information on related projects.

Further in the meeting, Ardakanian, who is also the head of the two countries’ joint economic committee, referred to the continuous exchange of electricity between Iran and its neighbors, saying that Qatar, at some points, has surplus electricity generation, which can be swapped with countries in the region, such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq, through Iran.

Mentioning the possibility of linking the two countries’ electricity networks, Al-Kaabi said electricity transfer between the two countries is possible and this proposal should be worked on.

In my opinion, this idea is practical, and it is possible to implement it, he said.

“Regarding cooperation in energy and water, good areas of cooperation can be defined, with the presence of the private sector of the two countries,” the minister added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian exporters say freight shipping rates to Qatar have surged by up to three times as a result of a coronavirus pandemic that caused a serious halt to the trade-in West Asia.

Adnan Mousapour, who serves as the head of Iran-Qatar Joint Chamber of Commerce, said on Saturday that the pandemic had caused a serious decline in a once-booming trade between the two countries, Press TV reported.

Trade between Iran and Qatar started to thrive when the Arab country came under a blockade by Saudi Arabia and its allies in June 2017.

Iranian exporters have supplied various agricultural products as well as construction materials to Qatar, bringing in over $335 million in revenues over the past Iranian calendar year that ended March 19.

Iran’s imports from Qatar topped $30 million over the same period, said Mousapor who insisted that trade balance between the two countries could have been further in Iran’s favor if the pandemic had not caused a closure of shipping lines.

Mousapour said that the spread of the disease in Iran had also affected tourism activities between Iran and Qatar as well as a suitcase trade, which normally accounts for a major share of exchanges between the two countries.

The businessman said that many Iranian companies have been facing payment settlement issues with Qatari partners because of the pandemic closures.

Qatar, a gas-producing giant, has been spared a recent crisis in international oil markets where historically low prices have caused a major decline in revenues for oil-exporting nations.

The small country was among the fewest in the region that maintained flights to Iran, even at the height of the pandemic.

Reports in recent months have suggested that Iran and Qatar have plans to increase the size of joint investment projects, especially those in the energy sector.

Director-General of QFFD Khalifa bin Jassim Al Kuwari said this “continued assistance to the Islamic Republic of Iran reflects the active role of the State of Qatar in supporting brotherly and friendly countries and helping them to overcome and contain this crisis and fight the pandemic, which poses a threat to the whole world”.

Qatar had previously sent two shipments of health and medical supplies to Iran in the past month and a half.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s main airline, Iran Air, launched three new flight routes to the Qatari capital Doha amid a boom in bilateral relations that have helped trade flourish between the two countries.

A senior Homa official said that the new routes will accommodate flights between three cities in southern Iran to Doha, Press TV reported.

“Routine weekly flights to Doha from airports in Bandar Abbas, Assaluyeh and Lamerd are the three flight routes that this company has moved to launch in these days,” said Abolqassem Jalali, who serves as the commerce and operation deputy at Iran Air.

Jalali said planes that Iran Air purchased two years ago from the French turboprop maker ATR will serve the new flight routes.

He said the a first round trip flight from Doha to Assaluyeh, in Iran’s Bushehr Province and on the coast of the Persian Gulf, was just launched on Sunday and will take place on the same day every week.

The official said new flights between Bandar Abbas and Doha started on February 6 and will continue on Sundays and Thursdays every week.

The route from Lamerd in the Iranian Fars Province to Doha had also begun on Thursday and will continue once a week on the same day, said Jalali.

The new flight routes come amid growing economic and political relations between Iran and Qatar. That has come against the backdrop of a nearly three-year-old blockade imposed on the Persian Gulf country by several Arab states in the region, including Saudi Arabia.

Iranian businesses have taken a more active role in Qatar since the blockade was imposed in June 2017.

The routes also come after Iran launched a first shipping service from Bushehr to Qatar’s Hamad port in August 2019.
