TEHRAN (Iran News) – Despite sanctions imposed by the US on Tehran, Iran has increased its power plant capacity by 3,250 megawatts (MW) and expanded its power transmission network by 1,600 kilometers since the beginning of the current Iranian calendar year (March 2019).

In May 2018, President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed between Iran and the P5+1 in July 2015, and reimposed Washington’s sanctions on Tehran.

Mostafa Rajabi-Mashhadi, the spokesman of the Iranian Energy Ministry, added on Tuesday that domestic electricity consumption declined by 3,874 MW during the peak season (summer) in the current year through effective, observable and reliable management and daily coordination between the dispatching center and Iranian electricity distribution companies, IRNA reported.

He noted that thanks to collective efforts by those engaged in the domestic power sector, the national electricity network has experienced no extensive blackout for the past 16 consecutive years, thus becoming one of the best in the world in terms of reliability.

Avoiding blackouts over a long period of time is a sign that Iran’s electricity sector has significantly improved its reliability over the years, consistent with plans to increase output and to diversify generation sources, he added.

The performance of the electricity system in Iran is now much better than those in the US and at least 12 major European countries and several others, the Energy Ministry spokesman said.

Rajabi-Mashhadi said in addition since March 2019, power plant with a capacity to generate 100,000 MW of electricity has been repaired in Iran and the national transmission network has been equipped with 10,000 megavolt amperes of power transformers.

The official noted that since March 2019, the Energy Ministry has managed to pay around $1 billion to private contractors for debt settlements despite strained government finances that have come as a result of US sanctions.

Iran has a massive power industry with hundreds of power plants, many of them of the efficient combined cycle type, providing reliable and affordable electricity to households and industries across the country.

Iran has also become the main electricity exporter to countries of the region in recent years as actual production has exceeded 300 terawatt-hours which corresponds to less than half of the current installed capacity in Iranian power plants.

The industry has major plans for switching to renewables as experts believe a current one-percent share of the total output from solar and wind farms and other sources does not match Iran’s potential in the sector.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Germany’s engineering giant Siemens is supporting Iran in plans to launch power plants relying on modern gas turbines that would add some 5 gigawatts (GW) to the country’s electricity generation capacity.

A senior official at Iran’s Ministry of Energy said on Saturday that Germany’s Siemens and Iran’s largest energy construction and engineering group Mapna had been cooperating on building F-class gas turbines that would significantly boost efficiency at Iran power plants.

Alireza Nasrollahi said Siemens and Mapna were working on F-class turbines in eight major locations across Iran, a project he said was worth around €2.2 billion.

Nasrollahi said a major batch of the turbines will come online at Iran’s Hengam power plant, located in the southern province of Hormozgan, in February.

He said the launch of the first phase of the Hengam power plant, a gas-fired unit with a capacity of 307 megawatts (MW), will mark the first time a government-run power plant in Iran is using F-class gas turbines.

The official said the installation of all the turbines in the combined cycle 906-MW Hengam, where a second gas-fired unit will come online before next summer, would cost around €500 million.

Siemens has been one of the longest-serving foreign companies in Iran with first activities dating back to more than 150 years ago.

The company, which has been a major contributor to Iran’s infrastructure projects over the past decades, was forced to downsize many of its projects in Iran after the United States imposed a series of unilateral sanctions on the country last year.

However, Iranian officials have hailed Siemens’ commitment to joint venture schemes, including contracts on the transfer of technology, saying it is a sign the company is valuing its long history of presence in the country and shows that the Germans are keen to resume work in Iran once sanctions are lifted.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian officials say Russian contractors are taking over at a major power plant south of the country which is expected to be built through finances provided by Moscow.

A local official in Iran’s southern province of Hormuzgan said that construction works for the Sirik Power Plant effectively started after banks had opened a letter of credit for transfer of funds for the project, Press TV reported.

Hossein Salimi, who heads the local Energy Department at Hormuzgan, said temporary shelters and offices had been erected at the site of the project in Sirik for operations to start by the Russian contractor.

Salimi said the manager of the Russian company in charge of the project would be in Tehran within the next days to order the start of the construction work.

Russia is expected to invest up to € 1.2 billion in the construction of Sirik, a 1,200-megawatt power plant that would significantly boost Iran’s electricity generation capacity in areas near the Persian Gulf.

Once fully operational, the Sirik project would add some 12 terawatt-hours (TWh) of power to Iran’s current production of more than 300 TWh.

The project has been described as a symbol of Russia’s growing inclination to invest in Iran at a time the United States is piling massive economic pressure on the country.

Russian officials has committed themselves to send their contractors to operate in other infrastructure projects in Iran worth nearly $5 billion.

Iran’s energy minister Reza Ardakanian said on Wednesday that the projects, which include a key railway southeast of the country, would start next year after clearing administrative barriers for transfer of funds and other issues.
