TEHRAN (Iran News) – Loading and unloading of goods in the ports of Iran rose seven percent during the first quarter of the current Iranian calendar year (March 21-June 21), as compared to the first quarter of the previous year, the deputy head of Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (MPO) announced.

Farhad Montaser Kouhsari said despite the limitation due to the sanctions and coronavirus pandemic, the loading and unloading capacity of the country’s commercial ports has increased to 44.9 million tons in the current year, from 42 million tons in the past year.

The official further announced that 21 million tons of oil products was loaded and unloaded in the ports of Iran during the three-month period of this year, rising 17 percent as compared to the same period of the previous year.

He said 536,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container products were loaded and unloaded in the said time span of the present year, one percent more than 536,000 TEUs in the first quarter of the past year.

The condition created by the coronavirus outbreak has had some devastating effect on different aspects of global trade.

In Iran, the condition has been even worse, as the country has been tackling the U.S. unilateral sanctions on its economy.

But despite all limitations and barriers, the country has managed to act successfully in running its economy and trade.

Iran’s port activities, which play some major part in the country’s trade, have been noticeable in this due.

The reports released in terms of the loading and unloading operation in the ports of the country are an indication of such successful trend.

As previously announced by the head of PMO, loading and unloading of commodities at the ports of Iran have risen six percent during the past Iranian calendar year (ended on March 19).

Mohammad Rastad also announced that the entrance of ocean vessels to the ports of country has increased eight percent in the previous year, PMO published on its website.

While Iran is combating the U.S. unilateral sanctions on its economy, the country’s ports as the major gates of exports and imports play some significant role in this battle. This role makes all-out support to ports and more development of them serious and vital.

Such necessity has led the government to define projects for more development of the ports and also take some measures to encourage investment making in ports, in addition to facilitate loading and unloading of goods, especially basic commodities, there.

It is worth mentioning that PMO has defined a high number of projects to develop and improve the country’s ports, as the country aims to double the capacity of its ports in a course of five years.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian port activities noticeably ongoing despite limitations.

The latest reports released in terms of the loading and unloading operation in the ports of the country are an indication of such successful trend.

As reported, 775,611 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) have been loaded and unloaded at Shahid Rajaee port, Iran’s largest and best-equipped container port, in the current Iranian calendar year (began on March 21).

Enjoying the most modern container terminals and port equipment, Shahid Rajaee in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province accounts for 85 percent of the total loading and unloading at the Iranian ports.

Another report indicates that 660,000 tons of commodities have been loaded and unloaded at the eastern ports of Hormozgan province during the first quarter of the current Iranian year (March 21-June 21), which was 27 percent higher than the figure for the first quarter of the previous year.

Imam Khomeini Port, in the southwestern Khuzestan province, has had also a good performance, as 73 vessels unloaded 3.622 million tons of basic goods at this port during the first quarter, rising three percent from the amount of basic commodities unloaded at this port in the same three-month period of the previous year.

The rising trend of loading and unloading operation has been also reported about the northern ports of the country.

The mentioned operation rose 28 percent at the ports of Mazandaran province, in the north of Iran, during the first quarter of the present year, as compared to the same period of time in the previous year.

Meanwhile, the quarterly export of goods from these ports has experienced a 57-percent growth year on year.

It is worth mentioning that Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) has defined a high number of projects to develop and improve the country’s ports, as the country aims to double the capacity of its ports in a course of five years.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Very large container ships with capacities of up to 22,000 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers would be able to dock at Iran’s Shahid Rajaee Port on the Persian Gulf coast by March, said Iran’s chief of Ports and Maritime Organization.

Mohammad Rastad said that some 900 meters of a new wharf at Shahid Rajaee Port would come on line by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2021) to enable Iran to process megaships in the facility for the first time, Press TV reported.

The construction of the wharf is part of the Phase 3 of development work at Shahid Rajaee Port, currently 59th on the global ranking of large container ports.

Development of the port, responsible for nearly 90 percent of container activity in Iran, has faced hurdles due to recurrent US sanctions targeting operator companies in the area.

However, despite growing American pressure, the facility has remained a major gateway for trade between Iran and the rest of the world.

The current administrative government in Iran plans to increase Shahid Rajaee’s annual capacity to 1.5 million TEU by August next year. That would hugely boost Iran’s capability for exports of various finished products as the government seeks to diversify the economy away from crude oil.

Other ports in southern Iran, including Bandar Imam Port, to the west of the Persian Gulf, where giant dry bulk ships dock, have been modernized by the government in recent years to avoid any halt to trade.

Iran is also developing a large ocean port in Chabahar, on the Sea of Oman, to facilitate trade between the Indian Ocean and landlocked countries to the east and northeast of Iran.

Managing Director of Iran’s Port and Maritime Organization Mohammad Rastad underlined on Monday the strategic position of Mokran coast, along the Sea of Oman, saying, the new port will be established to increase Iran’s marine traffic in international waters and the oceans.

“Mokran coastline can play a special role in the future of marine exchanges,” Mohammad Rastad said.

Mokran is a semi-desert coastal strip in the South of Sistan and Baluchestan, in Pakistan and Iran, along the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Noting that the Iranian ports have an aggregate capacity to handle 246 million tons of goods per year, the PMO head said, the figure is projected to rise to 286 million tons by the end of the Sixth Five-Year Development Plan (2017-22).

Rastad added, “PMO plans to build 83 new cargo vessels to join the country’s cargo fleet.”

“One of the major activities of the PMO is that 83 vessels needed in the ports will be built by the domestic manufacturers with an estimated investment of 240 million euros,” he said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – It’s been more than a year since that new Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar has been open and transiting for goods trade between regional countries.

Shahid Beheshti Port in Chabahar is open for regional trade. According to Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization, India’s Ports Global Limited has officially taken over the operations at phase 1 of the new Port in the southeastern port city of Chabahar.

Chabahar serves as Iran’s only oceanic port. It consists of two separate ports named Shahid Kalantari and Shahid Beheshti. Officials say the Indian company will operate phase 1 of Shahid Beheshti Port for a period of ten years.

After the inauguration of the Ports Global Limited office in Iran, the country leased the operational control of Shahid Beheshti port to India. IPGL conducts operations like loading and unloading, equipment supply and marketing at the port. Delegations from India, Afghanistan, and Iran visited the port to assess the infrastructure and investment opportunities as well as its commercial and transit facilities.

Officials also say the port offers the most tariff incentives for ports and maritime services among other ports in the Sea of Oman and the Persian Gulf regions.

Chabahar is the best spot for transit and trade between India, Afghanistan and other countries in the region, especially the CIS countries. India is participating in the development of the first phase of the Shahid Beheshti Port in cooperation with Iran under a 10-year lease.

The project to develop Shahid Beheshti Port began in 2007 through an investment amounting to $1 billion. The annual cargo tonnage of the port reaches as high as 8.5 million tonnes. India’s Ports global Limited took over the port operations in December 2018 and has been successfully handling cargo since then.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s first private port facilities on Caspian Sea shores is to open after nearly 15 years of planning and construction, said Allahyar Asadi, who heads Ports and Maritime Organization of Golestan Province.

The official said that construction of two main breakwaters at Khajeh Nafas Port was nearing its final stages, allowing officials to inaugurate the facility in the near future, Press TV reported.

He said that once open, Iran’s first private port would significantly boost maritime transportation alongside the eastern coast of the sea while it would lead to a major economic boom in the Golestan region.

Most of Iran’s trade through the Caspian Sea is processed via the western and central coasts of the enclosed body of water and in the provinces of Gilan and Mazandaran.

Golestan, which borders Turkmenistan, is the main agriculture hub in the region and a key gateway to Central Asian countries.

Planning Khajeh Nafas began in 2005 when government authorities sought to create more jobs in the region through more exchanges with Russia and also Kazakhstan, a country which is becoming a transit route for Chinese cargoes seeking to reach Europe.

Golestan Governor Hadi Haqshenas told IRNA on Sunday that Khajeh Nafas will soon begin processing large cargoes with a first ship carrying timber due to arrive at the port in the near future.

Haqshenas said the private owner of the port had made an initial investment of around $9 million for the 176-hectare port, which is located around 10 kilometers from the city of Bandar Torkaman and 50 kilometers from the provincial capital of Gorgan.

He said the port would be capable of accommodating ships with a maximum of 5,000 tons of cargo in its first phase of operation.
