TEHRAN (Iran News) – Participants in the forum on reviewing opportunities and capacities for trade between Iran and Pakistan on Tuesday in Tehran called for easing the custom condition for improving the trade between Iran and Pakistan.

Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mine and Agriculture (ICCIMA) hosted this event where Syed Muhammad Tariq Huda, Head of the Customs Administration of Pakistan as well as heads of chambers of commerce of Iran’s Zahedan and Pakistan’s Quetta were present.

In the forum, Gholam-Hossein Jamili, a member of presiding board of ICCIMA, said in recent days, signs of eagerness of officials and chambers of commerce of the two countries have been promising for developing economic condition and it signals a new chapter in the economic relations of the two states.

He added that to improve bilateral trades, the huge potentials for economic cooperation should be activated and through the joint cooperation both sides would witness trade exchanges and joint investments.

Jamili said the current trade cooperation of the two states is unsatisfactory so that share of each country from the other party’s market is less than 3 percent.

He referred to Iran’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and it seems in this frame work the opportunities for cooperation have been multiplied and this is an incentive for strengthening the trade level between Tehran and Islamabad.

He pointed to the capabilities of Iran’s private sector especially in the industrial and trade fields like medical equipment and medicines, agro and food products, detergents and hygienic products, construction materials and also in the technical and engineering services, tourism and handicrafts. He then announced readiness of Iran’s private sector for cooperation with Pakistani economic activists.

Jamili reiterated that Pakistan can also export textile machinery and materials, tropical fruits, farming and products to Iran.

He said both countries can use the mechanism of barter trade for enhancing the bilateral trade and reiterated that high tariff is one of the hurdles in way of implementing the preferential trade agreement between the two states.

Then Head of Customs Administration of Pakistan Mr. Tariq Hoda reiterated that in near future Pakistan will ease the custom process and the country is ready to ease visa issuance for Iranian traders. He then called for expansion of trade between Iranian and Pakistani companies.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – At least 20 trucks loaded with dates arrived in Pakistan through the Taftan border crossing after Islamabad decided to resume importing food items from Iran as the coronavirus disease in the region continues to slow down.

The crossings of Chagai, Washuk, Panjgur, Turbat and Gwadar will remain open for three days every week to import Iranian commodities, the Dawn newspaper reported citing sources in the Pakistani government.

They added that the Pakistani interior ministry had also allowed imports of petrol and diesel from Iran via Chagai and Katagar border crossings.

Pakistan had previously banned the import of any food items and products from Iran following the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Dates are regarded by many as a super-food that offers valuable nutrients. The fruit is free of saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol. Dates are also a staple on iftar (fast-breaking meal) tables during the holy month of Ramadan in which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.

Iran cultivates about 400 varieties of dates but only seven cultivars — Mazafati, Shahani, Sayer, Piarom, Zahedi, Kabkab and Astamaran — are the source of exports.

Iran’s Navy commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi met and held talks with his Pakistani counterpart Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi on Tuesday in Pakistan.

“As of now, we are ready to dispatch fleets to Pakistan’s ports, and we believe that the resolution exists for further interactions between the two sides,” Khanzadi said at the meeting.

He then noted the presidency of Iranian Navy over the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, adding “during this term, we made a lot of efforts, and Pakistan’s cooperation has been highly effective.”

“We are waiting for Pakistan to join the Maritime Security Belt wargame,” Khanzadi said, referring to a joint naval drill between Iran, China, and Russia in the Indian Ocean, scheduled for December 27, 2019.

He then called for collective cooperation and vigilance of neighboring countries to foil the undermining and destabilizing measures by the enemies, stressing that the region would be safer without the presence of foreign troops.

The Pakistan commander, for his part, said the China-Pakistan maritime corridor is a good opportunity for expanding economic relations, and Iran can serve as a good linking point between the West and the East.

He also thanked the Iranian Navy’s invitation for taking part in the joint wargame, adding “the level of relations between the two countries’ navies is not satisfactory, and we need to increase our role in the region in this regard.”

He made the remarks on expanding pharmaceutical trade with Iran in his meeting with Iranian Health Minister Saeed Namaki on Tuesday.

Expansion of Iran-Pakistan health and medical cooperation can help reduce infectious and non-communicable diseases in the region, he mentioned, adding that Pakistan can use Iran’s capacities in various fields of education, health, and medicine with the development of cooperation between the two countries.

Iran has taken very positive steps in the areas of health and public health coverage, he added, saying that, however, non-communicable diseases are the current problem of Iran and many other countries in the region.

Pakistani health minister noted that all regional countries should do their best to make a disease-free region, and the pharmaceutical trade is one way of reaching that point.

The 66th Session of WHO’s Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the most important regional health events in the region, he said.

Participation in this event is a great opportunity for all regional countries to take advantage of new health-related information and technologies, as well as experiences of other countries, he added.

The Pakistani official expressed hope that Iranian health officials would travel to Pakistan in the near future to see the progress of country in the health sector.

The 66th Session of WHO’s Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean is underway in Tehran with participation of high-level representatives from 222 countries.

The 4-day program includes the issues of eradication of poliomyelitis, health, environment, climate change, implementation of the Eastern Mediterranean vaccine action plan and regional malaria action plan, mental health care, implementation of the regional framework on cancer prevention and control, and implementation of the global action plan on antimicrobial resistance.
