TEHRAN (Iran News) – Oil production at the West Karoun oil fields in southwestern Iran increased fivefold in the past six years, Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said on Saturday.

The West Karoun oilfields have the capacity to produce up to one million barrels per day if there are additional investment and technology, Zanganeh said, according to Shana.

Zanganeh said last year that Iran aimed to produce 300,000 barrels of oil per day from West Karoun.

Zanganeh also said more than $30 billion is required to complete unfinished petrochemical projects across the country.

He added domestic companies are able to make such an investment, but if we can get it from micro-liquidity, there would be a greater chance for development in the oil industry.

Underlining the importance of investment in the oil industry, the minister noted that, every year, more than $25 billion must be invested in the country’s oil industry and if this doesn’t happen, other sectors of the economy would also suffer the consequences.

“There is only $12 billion worth of petrochemical projects which have been finalized but have not yet been started; there are also downstream and midstream projects, which together create a $40 billion investment opportunity in the petrochemical industry,” he added.

Iran started production of extra-heavy oil with the API gravity of 20 from West Karoun reserves, especially from the South and North Azadegan fields in May 2018.

Iran now has the most variety of oil production with eight types of light and heavy crude.

Iran has an advantage in global markets due to its range of oil products. Oil from the Hengam oil and gas field is the lightest in the world, while the oil from other fields in the Persian Gulf, such as Soroush, Noruz, and Forouzan, are among the heavy brands.

Meanwhile, Managing Director of Petrol Company of Iran Rasoul Najafzadeh said on Saturday that his country is working on four petrochemical parks to accommodate plants.

Najafzadeh said Orumieh Melamine, Ilam Polypropylene, Melamine Crystal Park and Lordegan Resin Urea parks are planned to be built in Iran in the near future.

He added that the Orumieh Potassium Sulfate Unit will become operational by March, with 400,000 tons per year of production capacity.

In October 2019, the National Petrochemical Company (NPC) of Iran announced that the diversity of petrochemicals produced in Iran is expected to be enhanced by 2025 as the country is planning to realize the sector’s second and third leaps by 2025.

The first leap of the industry took place in 2011 while the second and third leaps are planned to be realized by 2021 and 2025, respectively.

Furthermore, NPC considered feedstock supply to the plants as a priority, adding that the leaps would allow domestic production of key petrochemical items in the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News)- The 3rd gas platform of South Pars phases 22 to 24, was installed in offshore sector after loading and transferring it to the sea.

The 2,500-ton platform for the 23rd phase of South Pars field, as the second main platform of phases 22 to 24, was installed by HL-5000 vessel in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday.

“The platform for phase 23 is the third gas platform in phases 22 to 24 of the field. Similar to the first phase’s two platforms, the 3rd platform was constructed by Iran Marine Industrial Company (SADRA) with the daily production capacity of 14.2 mcm,” Acting Deputy Director of the development project of phases 22 to 24 of South Pars Gas Field, Ali Asghar Sadeghi, said.

He underlined that in addition to the strengthening of the technical capability of domestic producers and contractors, efforts made in this plan led to the considerable increase in production capacity of gas from South Pars Gas Field.

In relevant remarks in early October, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zangeneh said that the offshore sections of 27 South Pars phases would be fully developed in the first half of 2020.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the 5th Oil and Power Congress in Tehran, Zangeneh said that South Pars Phase 11 development plan would be launched by March 20, 2020.

He further said that phase 14 of the field would come on stream by 2021, adding, “We have made great progress in South Pars gas field.”

“We had initially intended to exploit the technology of building pressure booster platforms in Phase 11 with Total in the project which unfortunately failed as Total and CNPCI pulled out of the project because of the imposition of sanctions. They did so in a friendly manner and we did not have disputes with them in this regard. The sanctions created an atmosphere in which they could not and did not want to stay in the contract. They thought they could not continue the work and left the project anyway.”

By the end of this calendar year, 70 mcm/d of sweet gas will be added to South Pars daily output, he added.

Addressing reporters on Monday, the minister said the new discovery had added 22 billion barrels of crude oil to previous estimates of newly-discovered Namavaran oilfield, which stood at 31 billion barrels.

He said the field now is estimated to hold 53 billion barrels of crude oil in place and there is a possibility of its southward continuation.

Assuming a 10% recovery rate in the field, 2.2 billion barrels of crude oil have been added to the country’s crude oil production capacity, he said.

This is the second-largest oilfield discovered in Iran following the Asmari Oil Layer in Gachsaran with 54 billion barrels of oil in place.

Proved oil reserves in Iran, according to its government, rank fourth largest in the world at approximately as of 2013, although it ranks third if Canadian reserves of unconventional oil are excluded. This is roughly 10% of the world’s total proven petroleum reserves. At 2006 rates of production, Iran’s oil reserves would last 98 years if no new oil was found.

In addition to the large reserves, Iran still has huge potential for new significant gas discoveries: areas like Caspian Sea, North East, Central Kavir and especially areas starting from Aghar and Dalan gas fields in Fars province up to the Strait of Hormuz and Central Persian Gulf have considerable amount of undiscovered gas resources. According to the Exploration Directorate of NIOC, there are about 150 unexplored anticlines in Iran.
