According to figures released by the World Steel Association (WSA) on Monday, Iran produced 2.3 million tons of crude steel in July, showing a 14.3 percent increase compared to the figure for the same month of 2019, which was 2.04 million tons.

China topped the list of crude steel producers in the same seven-month period, with an output of 93.3 million tons while Iran ranked 10th.

Standing second to ninth in this list were, respectively, India (7.15 million tons), Japan (6.04 million tons), Russia (5.8 million tons), South Korea (5.5 million tons), the US (5.2 million tons), Turkey (3.1 million tons), Brazil (2.5 million tons) and Germany (2.4 million tons), the report said.

Global steel production in July amounted to 152.69 million tons, showing a 2.54 percent decrease compared to the figure for the same month of 2019, which was 156.67 million tons.

Iran produced 31.9 million tons of crude steel in 2019, according to the WSA figures released in January.

The country plans to increase its annual steel production capacity to 55 million tons by 2025, with exports expected to reach between 10 million tons and 15 million tons per year.

The WSA is one of the largest and most dynamic industry associations in the world. Its members represent approximately 85 percent of the world’s steel producers, including over 150 steel producers, with nine of the 10 largest steel companies, national and regional steel industry associations and steel research institutes.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Domestic Economy Desk The Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) plans to complete and open projects worth $2.2 billion in the domestic mining sector by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (March 2021) in cooperation with the private companies.

IMIDRO announced this on Tuesday, concurrent with the National Day of Industry and Mine, IRNA reported.

The organization added that the implementation of the projects is expected to create at least 4,000 indirect jobs.

It said this target has been set within the framework of the country’s macro policies.

This comes as Iran’s reduced dependence on oil revenues has heightened expectations that the sector should play a more significant role in the domestic economy. To this end, IMIDRO has adopted new policies to minimize the outflow of foreign currency resources and boost domestic production.

The organization also seeks to increase the mining sector’s share in the country’s GDP and exports, of which booting employment is an important prerequisite.

Over 90 percent of the country’s mines are located within 20 kilometers of rural areas. IMIDRO plans to accelerate balanced development in Iran’s deprived areas in cooperation with private companies through designing plans to this end.

Generating revenues through boosting non-oil exports is among the other main approaches of the Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade and IMIDRO. To achieve this, the mining sector’s share of the country’s overseas sales of non-oil products has been increased from 20 percent to 33 percent.

Exports from the domestic mining sector surpassed $9.2 billion in the year to March 2020, accounting for up to 22 percent of the country’s annual non-oil exports.

In the previous Iranian calendar year, IMIDRO completed mining projects valued at $3.2 billion despite the unprecedented US sanctions on the country, imposed unilaterally following Washington’s May 2018 withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed between Tehran and the P5+1 in July 2015.

IMIDRO is also expected to prepare the ground for the inauguration of projects worth $1 billion by the private sector by March 2021.

Exploration activities

Reports indicate that by September 2018, IMIDRO had carried out exploration activities in the country in an area of 250,000 square kilometers. However, since that date, until March 2020, a total of 4,000 square kilometers were added to the area under exploration by the organization.

In December 2018, IMIDRO drew up a plan to revive small mines in the country shut down or operating at half capacity due to domestic and international issues, and began its implementation in the previous year.

Small mines are important in view of their large number (98 percent of the country’s mines) as well as the potential to create employment (85 percent of the total capacity of the country’s mines), and stimulate domestic production. These mines can play a very significant role in generating sustainable employment in the mining sector and accelerating balanced development across the country.

In the year to March 2020, 146 small mines were revived in the country’s less developed areas.

In the current year, plans are underway to revive 200 mines and construct 25 processing units in the country.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has pocketed around $60 billion from exports of non-oil products, services, and energy since the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed its sanctions on the country’s sale of crude two years ago.

A senior official at the ministry of trade (MIMT) said on Tuesday that Iran had shipped a total of 135 million metric tons of exports as non-oil goods and products to other countries in two years between March 2018 and March 2020.

Hossein Modarres said that declared revenues for those shipments reached around $41.3 billion although he insisted that real income derived from exports over the past two calendar years was around $48 billion as many exporters normally declare lower values for their cargoes.

Modarres said that the Iranian government and the private sector had gained another $12 billion from the provision of technical, engineering and tourism services to other countries as well as from the exports of natural gas.

He said moving away from oil incomes turned out to be a blessing for Iran as the country is now feeling the minimum possible pressure from a historic crash in international crude prices.

“If there was no national self-esteem for moving away from oil there could be economic shocks because of the freefall in the price of oil in the international markets,” he said, adding, “Iran has been spared of these shocks (through) relying on export revenues.”

For the past two years, Iran has adopted various measures to help boost exports of various goods and services including lowering tariffs and taking steps to shore up key sectors of the economy like agriculture and manufacturing.

Petrochemical products still account for a bulk of Iran’s exports to other countries followed by metals and raw minerals, agrifood and handicraft.

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and later imposed sanctions on Iran.
