TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi on Wednesday discussed issues of mutual interest with Deputy Defense Minister of Azerbaijan Major General Fouad Mohammadov.

During the meeting, Khanzadi said that Islamic Republic of Iran has joint cooperation councils with most of the countries and the number of commissions with the neighboring states as well as those outside the region is increasing, IRNA reported.

The more the communications, diplomatic shuttles and commissions hold successfully, the more both the region and the world will be more secure, he said.

Noting that face-to-face dialogues, especially between neighboring states, are very significant, he said, “Such interactions will help us know each other better and understand common interests and undivided interests and have more collective security.”

The geopolitical zone of North of the Islamic Republic of Iran, where the Caspian Sea is located, is the most important component for the proximity and interaction of neighboring naval forces, he said, adding that many talks have so far been held on the Caspian Sea between the governments and naval forces of five countries and good agreements have been made.

Contending that the Caspian Sea needs security, Khanzadi said that the security should be ensured collectively and naval forces of the five littoral states hold talks in a safe and secure ambiance.

Iran and Azerbaijan Republic navy forces boast of good capacities for cooperation, he said, noting that they can exchange students and run courses in Persian, Azeri and English languages.

Fouad Mohammadov, for his part, said that there are many areas of cooperation between the two countries’ naval forces.

He also invited Khanzadi to visit his country to help promote interaction between the two forces.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif referred to the recent naval drills between Iran, Russia, and China, which wrapped up Sunday, saying such cooperation shows that some major powers are against any tension in the region.

Addressing Iran joint drills he said that there are “other countries, among major world powers, which oppose tension in this region,” the top diplomat added that “this joint exercise also shows that Iran is willing to cooperate with other countries to ensure the security and the free passage of maritime traffic in the important international waterway of Hormuz.”

He made the remarks upon arrival in Russia’s Vnukovo airport on Sunday night for a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

Iran, Russia, and China held a joint naval from Friday to Sunday in the Sea of Oman and Indian Ocean with the aim of promoting the security of international trade in the strategic regions, as well as sharing experience among participants against piracy and marine terrorism.

The drills came amid the United States’ efforts to set up a so-called international maritime coalition in the Persian Gulf following a series of suspicious attacks on passing takers in the waterway it blamed on Iran.

Tehran has firmly rejected the accusations, describing the incidents as “false flag” operations.

Also, in his remarks on Sunday, Zarif said that Tehran and Moscow enjoy close ties and that his current visit to the country is his 28th trip during his six and a half year tenure as foreign minister.

“We [Iran and Russia] have strategic ties and it is therefore required to have constant cooperation and consultation regarding various regional and international issues,” he said.

He made the remark on Iran plans to make up drills in Caspian Sea in a TV interview on Sunday night, while discussing the details of Iran’s joint naval drill with Russia and China in the northern part of the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman, dubbed as the “Marine Security Belt,” which wrapped up on Sunday.

“There is no threat facing the Persian Gulf region except for the presence of foreign forces such as the US, which are endangering the security of this region,” the Iranian Navy commander said.

He said the reason for holding the joint drill in the northern part of the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman was that this region was in need of more coordination for staging drills and providing security.

Khanzadi maintained that the three countries of Iran, Russia, and China have agreed to stage the joint naval drill every year.

“We are seeking to achieve collective security, and for that purpose, we are inviting regional countries to join us [in the drills],” he added.

Khanzadi also said the drill, which covered an area of 17,000 square kilometers this time, would expand to further areas for future exercises.

The Iranian commander then described the efforts of some countries to form a coalition in the Persian Gulf as “pointless” and a waste of resources, which was not well received by other countries.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The deputy commander of the Iranian Navy underlined the significance of the ongoing Iran-Russia-China joint naval drills and said the Indian Ocean security guarantees economic interests at the world level.

“Indian Ocean Security in the north part is one of the most important waterways in the world and plays an important role in international trade,” Admiral Gholamreza Tahani said, addressing a briefing attended by commanders from the Russian and Chinese navies.

“Ensuring full security of shipping lines in the region, especially in the area between the Strait of Hormuz, the Strait of Malacca and the Bab al-Mandab Strait… safeguards economic interests on the global stage on the one hand and necessitates cooperation and convergence among different navies on the other hand,” he said.

The deputy commander of the Iranian Navy further highlighted the importance of the joint naval drills of Iran, Russia, and China and said common maritime threats and political developments between the three countries’ governments have helped the navies to boost their cooperation.

Iran, Russia, and China began their joint naval drills on Friday, according to the deputy commander of the Iranian Navy.

The three countries are holding the four-day joint naval exercise, dubbed Marine Security Belt, in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Oman.

On Wednesday, Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, the spokesman for Iranian Armed Forces, said the event is meant to promote the security of international trade in the strategic regions, adding that sharing experience in maritime rescue operations was also to be pursued in the maneuvers.

On Thursday, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian announced that Beijing’s Xining guided-missile destroyer would take part in the drills. Three Russian vessels are also taking part in the drills, according to reports.

The war game comes amid US efforts to woo countries into a maritime coalition for patrols in the Persian Gulf, which have received a lukewarm welcome from its allies.
