Speaking to Mehr News Agency on Sunday, Dr. Esmaeil Saberfar, CEO of an Iranian knowledge-based company active in producing flu vaccines, said his company obtained the technical know-how for the development of the vaccine after ten years of research and experiment.

“Manufacturers of this type of vaccine are in France, Germany, Belgium, the US, Italy, Japan, and South Korea; foreign-made flu vaccines are currently being used in the country,” he said.

According to him, about $8 million worth of these vaccines is imported annually, adding that the domestic production of the vaccines would save the country the same amount of forex.

“Although the vaccine has not yet been mass-produced, other countries such as India, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates have already made a request for it,” he added.

The Iranian flu vaccine can rival those manufactured by France, he said, adding that the vaccine would hit the Iranian market in September 2020.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior medical official in Iran said that the US and the western media are using the atmosphere created after the outbreak of the virus in China as a weapon against the powerful Asian country’s economy.

“The reality is that the US trade and economy confrontation against China have turned virus into a pretext to strike a rival,” Rouhollah Dorostkar, the head of Baqiatallah University’s virology department, told Iranian news agency on Wednesday.

He expressed doubt that the US and other western media would make the same level of hues and cries if the virus started from a city other than Wuhan city in China.

Dr. Dorostkar pointed out that coronavirus and flu virus behaves similarly, and said, “Although the US has developed the flu vaccine since years ago, it still takes lives and Washington is doing trade and making a profit from the disease.”

Iran’s Civil Defense Organization in a statement on Tuesday declared that no patient infected with coronavirus had been hospitalized in the country, stressing efforts to produce a vaccine for the deadly disease.

“The general condition of the country is rated white with regard to biosecurity,” the statement by the Civil Defense Organization said, stressing preparedness to use all its capacities to fight against biological threats, control the disease and treat possible infections.

“The existing field studies and evidence show that the possibility for the outbreak of this disease in Iran is low,” it added.

The Civil Defense Organization announced that it has started research on the disease and is trying to develop an antibody and vaccine for it.

The coronavirus was first seen in Wuhan, China, late December 2019. It has so far killed 490 and affected over 24,324 people.

Wuhan is in a virtual lockdown, and nearly all flights at the city’s airport have been canceled and checkpoints block the main roads leading out of town. Authorities have imposed similar lockdowns on more than 10 cities near Wuhan as part of the ongoing containment effort.

The coronavirus has caused alarm because of its similarity to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which killed nearly 650 people across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003. Like SARS, it can spread among people through the respiratory tract. The first case of the new virus was confirmed on December 31, 2019.

The virus has since been detected in Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, and the United States.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – There is no serious shortage of medicine or medical equipment in Iran, Minister of Health Saeed Namaki said.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the health minister said Iran has not faced any severe shortage of medicine although the enemies have waged an economic war against the country.

The medicine shortage at the present time has dropped to one-third what it used to be last year, Namaki added.

Unveiling plans to inaugurate 1,000 new health and medical projects, he said the Health Ministry has launched the second stage of a grand plan focusing on the prevention of diseases.

In comments in October, Namaki said Iran was exporting pharmaceuticals to countries in Europe, Africa, and Central Asia.

Earlier in September, Secretary of Biotechnology Development Headquarter at the Iranian Vice-Presidency for Science and Technology said Iranian biopharmaceuticals were being exported to major customers like Russia, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Turkey, adding that plans were underway to transfer Iranian biopharmaceuticals technology to Argentina.

The Independent News reported earlier that US sanctions have seriously impacted humanitarian trade with Iran, limiting the import of life-saving medicine into the country and endangering the lives of Iranian patients, according to a new report.

The report conducted by Human Rights Watch says patients in Iran suffering from special and rare diseases, such as cancer and epilepsy, dependent on imported medicine and therefore are suffering from the negative effects of sanctions.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Seventeen Iran-made medicines, containing high-tech drugs, will be exported to Russia, Mohsen Asadi Lari, director of international cooperation at the Ministry of Health, has announced.

Since last year, negotiations are underway with the Russian Ministry of Health for medicine trade, he said, adding that a meeting was also held in Moscow last week in this regard, IRNA reported on Tuesday.

The meeting was held on November 20, attended by deputy health ministers of Iran and Russia in line with the goal of cooperation and within the framework of a daylong seminar on the rules and procedures of registration of medicines and medical equipment in Russia.

There has been cooperation between the two countries for nearly five years in the field of medicine and medical equipment, he said, adding, Russia has a huge $20 billion drug market and Iran plans to expand cooperation with the neighboring country.

If companies reach an agreement on technology transfer, the production line could also be moved to the target country, for example, an Iranian pharmaceutical raw material production line started in Saint Petersburg three years ago, he highlighted.

He went on to say that entering the Eurasian health market can come beneficial for the country as Iran’s quality of medicine and medical equipment will prove high-quality in the region, adding, the country’s needs for pharmaceutical raw materials can also be met by attending these markets.

For the time being, Iran cooperates with Iraq, Lebanon and Tunisia in the health sector, he concluded.

Three years ago, Iran and Russia signed 15 documents, protocols and memorandums of understanding, focusing on the pharmaceutical and medical equipment sector.
Also, Iran has launched a production line for manufacturing multiple sclerosis drug in St. Petersburg.

Deputy health minister Reza Malekzadeh said in July that 73 types of Iran-made medicine produced by knowledge-based companies are being exported to other countries.

In late May, Hossein Vatanpur, an official with the Ministry of Health, announced that 52 Iranian knowledge-based companies export their products with value more than 70 million dollars.

For this purpose, the deputies’ health ministries of Iran and Russia met and held talks in Moscow on Tuesday and emphasized the need for the expansion of Iran-Russia medical equipment cooperation and export of medicine and medical equipment.

This meeting was held in Moscow’s Holiday Hotel in the presence of Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Sanaei in line with the implementation of joint cooperation commission between the two countries and within the framework of a daylong seminar on the rules and procedures of registration of medicines and medical devices in the Russian Federation.

Iranian Ambassador to Russia Mehdi Sanaei said that organizing such seminar will expand and develop bilateral relations in the field of medicine and medical industries.

The two countries of Iran and Russia have great potentials for the development of cooperation and collaboration in relevant field, he said, adding, “upon signing and sealing Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Iranian side found a complementary capacity for its potentials in this field in order to present its products and capabilities in lucrative Eurasian market.”

The ambassador also urged Iranian medical agents both in public and private sectors to take advantage of this opportunity.

For his part, Russian Deputy Health Minister Dimitri Kastinov said, “organizing this meeting had been approved in 15th Joint Commission Meeting and we believe that today’s discussion will provide a framework for exporting medicine to the Eurasian Economic Union.”

“Iran has the biggest hybrid cord blood bank in the Middle-East and we collect samples from other countries, including Turkey, Turkmenistan, Romania, Iraq, Afghanistan, Jordan, Norway, Canada, Britain, the UAE, and Oman, as well,” Managing Director of the cord blood bank technological company Morteza Zarrabi said in Tehran on Wednesday.

He added that 120,000 samples of cord blood have so far been stored in the country.

Zarrabi explained that the cord blood taken from different people is kept in the bank with the help of fully indigenous know-how, adding that the cord blood banks in the neighboring states have been set up by the European and US firms which take the samples to their own countries after collection and storage.

Cord blood (umbilical cord blood) is blood that remains in the placenta and in the attached umbilical cord after childbirth. Cord blood is collected because it contains stem cells, which can be used to treat hematopoietic and genetic disorders.

There are several methods for collecting cord blood. The method most commonly used in clinical practice is the “closed technique”, which is similar to standard blood collection techniques.

With this method, the technician cannulates the vein of the severed umbilical cord using a needle that is connected to a blood bag, and cord blood flows through the needle into the bag. On average, the closed technique enables collection of about 75ml of cord blood cells.

Collected cord blood is cryopreserved and then stored in a cord blood bank for future transplantation. Cord blood collection is typically depleted of red blood cells before cryopreservation to ensure high rates of stem cell recovery.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Deputy Minister of Health, Treatment and Medical Education Mohammad Reza Shanehsaz emphasized that the country is able to produce nearly all its needed medicine despite the US sanctions. Iran’s self-sufficiency in medications is an achievement needed to be accomplished.

Iran is currently able to produce %99 of medicine needed by patients with the remaining one percent either not being cost-effective to be produced domestically or it is a totally new product in the world, Shanehsaz said, addressing the 16th Conference on Iran’s Pharmaceutical Sciences in Kermanshah on Wednesday.

He added that some 180 medicines will be produced in Iran within two years, which will save 250 million dollars in the currency for the country.

“Currently, Iran has a special status in terms of scientific products in the field of pharmaceuticals, which is indebted to the efforts of the local experts and elites,” Shanehsaz said.

While the enemies are seeking to create problems for the country, it has attained self-sufficiency in producing medicine, he said, noting that there is no shortage of medicine despite sanctions and pressure piled on the country.

Iran has taken long strides in producing different types of drugs and medical equipment and exported them to many foreign states.

A recent report by the scientific and technological department of Iran’s presidential office said that the country is able to produce 97% of its needs to drugs indigenously.

in July, Iranian Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari unveiled 8 new drugs during his visit to knowledge-based companies in Alborz province near Tehran.

The newly-developed drugs included Micro-Peltamparazole, Tamsulosin hydrochloride, Naltrexone base, Citalyptin phosphate, Peo glitazone, and other medicine.

As a result of Iran’s self-sufficiency in medications, the drugs have applications in the treatment of digestive diseases and intestinal insufficiency, and will also be exported to the regional states.

The medical progress made in Iran alongside valuable experiments gained in various fields of health and treatment caused the country to be introduced as a distinguished model among the Islamic countries, said the caretaker of the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences.

Alireza Zali told that the World Health Organization confirmed not only the accuracy and efficiency of health patterns observed in Iran but also the pivotal role played by the country in the field of health, treatment and medical sciences. Iran News covers the story told by Iran Daily.

He said presently Islamic countries are faced with a large number of common medical challenges including ecological variations, environmental problems, demographic transitions, and an increase in risk-prone health behaviors among people.

“An increase in life expectancy as well as the complexities created by modern life in the field of health have caused the health-related issues to become a common concern among the Islamic countries”, he said.

Referring to the Fourth International Health Congress of Islamic Countries held in Tehran from Oct.9-11, he said Iran has managed to host the health tourism conference of Islamic countries because the country has achieved a high position in the field of medical sciences during the past years.

He noted that Health Tourism Development Center of Islamic countries was established in Iran five years ago.

Zali, who also acts as the advisor to Parliament’s Health and Treatment Commission, said about 800,000 medical tourists arrived in Iran in the year to March 2019.

He noted that there is no exact figure available in this regard because the information of some foreign visitors in Iran from neighboring countries to receive medical services has not been collected.

“Even if no change were to be made in the health, treatment and medical sector of the country, we are capable of hosting 1.5 million health tourists annually,” he said, adding that making any improvement in the infrastructure of Iran’s medical sector would help increase the figure to 2.5 million.

Pointing to the implementation of economic resistance policies in the country, he said given that efforts are underway by officials to manage an economy without oil in Iran, health tourism is one of the best opportunities which can be used to earn revenues for the country.

Zali said the amount of hard currency brought to the country by a medical tourist is three-to fivefold higher than that by an ordinary tourist.

The official said the ground has been prepared in Iran to develop rehabilitation tourism, ecotourism, and geotourism sectors, pointing out that efforts should be made to provide the condition for foreign patients to use such facilities for convalescence.

He said a large number of natural attractions including warm and mineral water springs are in Iran which can be used for treating various diseases.

“They are also attractive for healthy people willing to improve their well-being,” he concluded.
