IKCO Releases Peugeot 207 with Panoramic Roof

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s largest car manufacturer, Iran Khodro Company (IKCO), is launching a new version of its popular French model Peugeot 207 with a panoramic roof.

Ahmad Aqajani, a project contractor working for IKCO, said that the carmaker has already launched mass production for the new version of Peugeot 207, saying the move would boost sales and help increase customer satisfaction, Press TV reported.

Aqajani said the panoramic glass roof developed for Peugeot 207 is part of a wider scheme at IKCO to produce modern vehicle roofs for various models through the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) method.

He said mounting panoramic roofs on mass-produced cars like Peugeot 207 required some adjustments to IKCO’s production lines.

“We added some robots and equipment to the lines and a number of new working stations were built inside the line,” he said, adding that all parts required for mounting new roofs on IKCO’s homemade and foreign models have been fully manufactured by Iranian parts makers.

The contractor said that IKCO plans to sell 700 units of Peugeot 207 equipped with panoramic roofs in its initial offering to the market, adding that the company has a capacity to manufacture 200,000 units of the car, including normal hatchback versions, per year.

Iran’s car industry has thrived technologically and logistically in recent years, mainly because a series of American sanctions imposed on the country since 2018 have forced car makers to develop innovative solutions to maintain output at normal levels.

The IKCO and other car manufacturers have developed various high-tech parts needed to finish foreign models by using expertise and investment inside Iran.

Recent reports have suggested that car production in the country has rebounded following a hiatus that was caused by the spread of the coronavirus.

He made the announcement in the inauguration ceremony of Peugeot ‘301’ production line at the place of IKCO.

As he added, ICKO has indigenized production of an auto part and will unveil it in early autumn. As Yeke Zare described, IKCO is the first Iranian car company who has been able to manufacture this auto part.

He, elsewhere, said that in Peugeot ‘301’ production, IKCO is employing the technology that PSA Peugeot Citroen has brought to Iran although the French automaker has left the country in light of the US sanctions.

The IKCO chief said his company tries to continue producing the cars that were to be manufactured jointly under the contract with Peugeot even if the French side does not agree to keep the agreement.

According to the scheduled program, Peugeot 301 passenger car will hit the domestic car market by the yearend.

Some 2,123 parts are required for manufacturing this passenger car, 565 of which have been indigenized by Iranian manufacturers, Vice President for Science and Technology added.

In June 2016, Iran Khodro and the French carmaker Peugeot-Citroen (PSA) agreed to launch a joint auto company in Tehran under a joint venture worth 400 million euros.

But in 2018, the French company reneged on the agreement and decided to obey the US sanctions against Tehran by leaving Iran.

Peugeot ‘301’ production line inaugurated in IKCO

Accordingly, 60 percent of parts needed for manufacturing Peugeot 301 will be provided through domestic production, expandable to 80 percent in upcoming programs, VP Sattari said, adding, “some 300 Iranian parts suppliers have been employed for manufacturing parts of this passenger car.”

He went on to say that Peugeot 301 sedan fully observes requirements of international standards.

Peugeot 301 is manufactured in IKCO while France’s Peugeot Company left Iran in the wake of US sanctions, he said, adding, “earlier, it was supposed that all parts and equipment needed for manufacturing this passenger car would have been provided by French companies.”

After France’s Peugeot left Iran, this giant project was handed over to domestic manufacturers, the vice president added.

IKCO to offer Dena models in Ukraine through Azerbaijan operations

Iran’s largest car manufacturer Iran Khodro Company (IKCO) is planning to offer its Dena model, co-produced by Azerbaijan, in the Ukrainian market, a senior official at the company said.

Head of IKCO operations in Asia, Europe, America and Commonwealth of Independent States, Sabina Nobari, said the company is set to export its Dena vehicles to Ukraine through its operations in Azerbaijan.

According to the official, a limited number of Dena and Dena Plus models will be shipped to the East European country as Completely-Built-Units (CBU) in the first phase to weigh the market’s feedback.

The vehicles roll out of Azerbaijan’s Naft Chaleh production site, which is jointly owned by AzEuroCar LLC and IKCO.

IKCO was present in the Ukrainian market between 2006 and 2010 selling some 12,000 Samands in its market.
