TEHRAN (Iran News) –The Iranian Judiciary’s High Council for Human Rights has issued its midterm assessment on human rights status in Iran to the United Nations, reporting “huge progress”.

Kazem Gharibabadi, secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights, drafted the report. It was sent to the UN Human Rights Council on Saturday in accordance with the Universal Periodic Review, or UPR, a procedure that entails a review of all UN member nations’ human rights records.

According to the report, “huge progress” has been made in improving human rights situation in Iran based on Islamic values and the country’s constitution.

“In accordance with the existing conditions and with the aim of upholding social justice and establishing people’s welfare, Iran has made huge investment in economic, cultural and social fields, and has guaranteed people’s rights to equal participation and progress,” the report said.

The report delves into Iran’s legislation and policies aimed at promoting human rights for various groups, ranging from the disabled to religious minorities, women and children, and refugees, during the Iranian year 1399 (March 2020-March 2021) and the first six months of the year 1400, which ended on March 20, 2022.

According to Gharibabadi, despite limits imposed by the U.S. as a result of “cruel and inhumane” sanctions over the last 43 years, Iran has achieved great progress in improving its human rights status.

“The unilateral coercive measures by the United States against the Islamic Republic of Iran over the past four decades have extensively and discriminately violated the basic rights of the Iranian people and left irreparable harms,” he wrote.

“Those measures are in clear violation of the UN Charter, international law regulations as well as international human rights laws,” Gharibabadi noted.

The report cites some of the U.S. measures including embargo on import of medicine and medical equipment to Iran, highlighting that such policies harmed hospitals during the Covid-19 outbreak.

“To lower the effect of the unilateral U.S. sanctions, which have been tightened in the past two years, Iran has taken into consideration the impacts of the coercive measures in all processes involving the formulation of laws and policy-making, and has implemented plans supporting vulnerable classes of the society, particularly during the Covid pandemic,” it stated.

The report underscored that there is always room for additional improvement in the human rights situation.

It also emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the countries that actively implements the UPR, and that “the country’s basic policy is to support this balanced and non-selective mechanism.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Raisi Says Judiciary Must Act Authoritatively. Judiciary Chief Judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iran’s president-elect stressed that the Judiciary must act authoritatively; this is not personal authority and is the power given to the body by the law.

Speaking at a ceremony commemorating the Judiciary Week on Wednesday after paying homage to the Founder of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini (R) by attending his mausoleum , Hojjatoleslam Seyed Ebrahim Raisi said: “We must not have trial and error today.”

This ceremony is held so that high-ranking judicial officials renew allegiance with the ideals of the Founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini.

Raisi added: “We should try to do what Imam Khomeini and the martyrs and the Leader of the Islamic Revolution want.”

The chief of the judiciary went on to say: “Today we have to work hard to administer justice, and the executive apparatus must rule in all layers of this apparatus of justice so that the number of cases entering the judiciary is reduced.”

Raisi pointed out: “In the judiciary during the transformation period, we focused on justice to advance the “document of transformation”, and in the presidential election, the message of the people was “change”, and this change is also centered on the administration of justice.

The Judiciary Chief and senior judicial officials also renewed allegiance with the aspirations of the martyrs by visiting the tombs of 72 people martyred in a bomb explosion in the office of the Islamic Republic Party in June 28, 1981.

On 28 June 1981, the Hafte-Tir bombing occurred, where the Judiciary Chief and the Secretary of the Islamic Republic Party Ayatollah Mohammad Beheshti, four cabinet ministers (health, transport, telecommunications, and energy ministers), twenty-seven members of the Majlis (Parliament), including Mohammad Montazeri, and several other government officials were assassinated.

Since then and to commemorate the martyrdom of Beheshti and his comrades is marked as the Judiciary week.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Raeisi Registers to Run for President as Independent. Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi, who heads Iran’s Judiciary, has registered to officially run in the June 18 presidential election, shortly after announcing his candidacy as an “independent.”

Raeisi turned up at the Iranian Interior Ministry’s election headquarters in Tehran on Saturday, the last day of the registration process, to officially hand in his credentials and put his name down for the race.

“Seeing the living conditions of the people; the issues of unemployment, high prices, the people’s livelihood, and the economic situation are a major cause for concern,” the Judiciary chief said after signing up for the vote.

Raeisi proclaimed that he would be running on a platform of fighting “corruption and incompetence,” and that he did not consider himself “a contender against political groups.”

In a statement earlier in the day, Raeisi — a figure largely associated with the Principlist camp — announced he was seeking to contest the key vote as an “independent” candidate with the aim of bringing about change in the country’s executive management.

“While respecting all the candidates and political groups, I have entered the scene…as an independent in order to bring about a change in the country’s executive management and put up a relentless fight against poverty and corruption, humiliation and discrimination,” he said the statement.

Raeisi said he had a good knowledge of the country’s challenges and problems besides its resources and capabilities, pledging efforts to help the nation in line with the “Second Step of the Revolution” statement issued in 2019 by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to Iran’s young generation.

Raeisi served as attorney general from 2014 to 2016, and was deputy Judiciary chief from 2004 to 2014. He was also prosecutor and deputy prosecutor of Tehran in the 1980s and 90s.

Another Principlist figure, Sa’eed Jalili, has joined the 2021 Iranian presidential race, despite widespread belief earlier that he would not run if heavyweight Ebrahim Raeisi did, and potentially contributing to a further division of Principlist votes.

Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri has registered to run in the June 18 presidential election, pitting himself against Ebrahim Raeisi, who is seen as the Principlists’ main candidate.

Jahangiri filed his application with the election headquarters at the Interior Ministry on Saturday, the final day of the registration process for presidential hopefuls.

Jahangiri was the Reformist camp’s second-best choice, after Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif announced on Wednesday that he would not be running, turning the spotlight on the Iranian vice president.

“Our Iran has faced various issues and difficulties in recent years and is now in serious need of real openings in people’s lives, all-out development, [and] the improvement of people’s livelihoods with the removal of sanctions, sustainable economic growth that would create jobs, and support for production and a fairer redistribution of wealth,” he said.

“Elections should be honored and made effective as an opportunity arising from the ideals of the Islamic Revolution and the constitutional capacity to exercise national sovereignty and reform the governance process,” he added.

Jahangiri said he had not intended to run, but decided against his initial intention after Zarif announced his own refusal to run.

A former Parliament speaker, Larijani headed to the election headquarters at the Iranian Interior Ministry in Tehran on Saturday — the last day of registration — to officially put his name down for the race.

His nomination comes after weeks of speculation about whether or not he would run and whether he would run a Principlist or Reformist ticket. A veteran politician, Larijani is associated with the Principlist camp but has been tapped as a potential ally by both sides in recent months.

Larijani served as the speaker of the Iranian Parliament from 2008 to 2020. He was the secretary-general of the Supreme National Security Council from 2005 to 2007.

Meanwhile, a number of other figures from the two Reformist and Principlist camps, including former cabinet ministers Abbas Akhoundi, Masoud Pezeshkian, and Shamseddin Hosseini, have so far appeared at the registration venue to file their applications.

Ex-lawmaker Mostafa Kavakebian and former IRIB chief Ezzatollah Zarghami also put down their names for the key vote.

The registration process will come to an end at 18:00 local time later in the day.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior official at Judiciary said Iran is to prosecute 46 US officials involved in the imposition of unjust sanctions on the Islamic Republic, which among other things, have prevented the country from importing medications necessary to treat patients with serious diseases.

The announcement was made by Head of the Iranian Judiciary’s High Council for Human Rights Ali Baqeri-Kani on the sidelines of a visit to a children’s hospital in Tehran on Monday, Press TV reported.

Commenting on the imposition of tough unilateral sanctions on Iran by the United States, which has prevented the country from buying essential medications, Baqeri-Kani said, those Americans “have spared no effort” to deprive Iranians from crucial medicines imports.

“We are using all legal means, at domestic and international levels, to counteract these crimes and today, I announce that the names of 46 American natural and legal persons, who have been one way or another involved in imposing unjust and inhumane sanctions on the Iranian nation, have been given to Tehran prosecutor’s office” to prosecute them in accordance with a law on countering terrorist measures of the United States, he said.

In May 2018, US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the UN-endorsed 2015 nuclear deal, which it had signed as a member of the P5+1 group with Tehran in 2015, and re-imposed the anti-Iran sanctions that had been lifted under the agreement.

Iran sued the US at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) afterwards. The tribunal ruled that the US should lift its sanctions on humanitarian supplies.

The trade of humanitarian goods, such as food, medicine and medical devices, is theoretically allowed by the US, but European companies refuse to do business with Iran, fearing secondary American sanctions. The bans imposed on the Iranian banking system have dissuaded many pharmaceutical firms from doing business with Iran.

The United States in June activated a set of sanctions it had imposed on Iran’s shipping network six months ago, in a move expected to further hamper imports of food and medical supplies into Iran at a time when the country is fighting to contain a deadly coronavirus outbreak.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Baqeri-Kani said despite all restrictions, Iran is now a leading country in treating various diseases, but this does not downplay the inhumane nature of the conduct of Iran’s enemies, particularly the US.

The Iranian youths are doing their best to prevent any disruption to the country’s health and treatment sectors, he added.

During a visit to a medical center for treatment of children suffering from epidermolysis bullosa or EB on Thursday, Baqeri-Kani censured the Western states for pretending to be advocates of human rights while blocking Tehran’s imports of medicine meant for child patients.

He said the European governments “do not even adhere to the rules and regulations of war, because in wartime medical mechanisms are immune from violation.”

According to Nour News, the Romanian Police has also submitted a 29-page report to the authorities in Iran.

The body of the 52-year-old judge from Iran was found dead at Bucharest’s Duke hotel on June 19.

Mansouri, who was accused of taking a 500,000-euro bribe, was a co-defendant in a major financial corruption trial currently underway in Iran that also involves former deputy head of the Judiciary Akbar Tabari, among others.

Iranian authorities had issued an alert for Mansouri’s arrest through the International Criminal Police Organization and requested his extradition to Iran.

The ex-judge was arrested in Romania, but later released from custody and put under police watch.

He was found dead in the lobby of the hotel on June 19. On June 23, Romania said autopsy findings indicated that he had died of the impact from a fall.

Bucharest’s prosecuting unit said in a statement that based on preliminary conclusions from the forensic autopsy, Mansouri’s death was “caused by traumatic injuries incompatible with life, produced by hitting a hard surface.”

The death sentence was carried out against Seyed Mahmoud Mousavi Majd at dawn on Monday, according to local reports.

In June, Iran’s judiciary announced that Mousavi Majd had worked as a spy for the CIA and Mossad and given them intelligence on the whereabouts and movements of Iranian top commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by the US in Iraq in early January.

It added that the case of the informant had nothing to do with the American assassination of General Soleimani as he had been arrested four months before the top general’s martyrdom.

Lt. General Soleimani, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was the deputy head of Iraq’s Hashd al-Sha’abi (PMU), and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport on January 3.

The White House and the Pentagon claimed responsibility for the assassination of General Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of US President Donald Trump.

In the early hours of January 8, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) targeted the US airbase of Ain al-Assad in retaliation for the US move.

Earlier this month, a retired employee of Iran’s Defense Ministry was hanged for providing the US with information on Iranian missiles.

The spy, named Reza Askari, was put to death for spying for the CIA.

After retirement from the Defense Ministry’s Aerospace Department in 2012, the executed convict was connected with the CIA, sold information on the production of Iranian missiles, and received the money in exchange.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Gholam Hossein Esmaeili said courts and prisons across Iran have been given a new directive on permitting prisoners to get furlough as part of precautionary measures to contain the second wave of the COVID-19.

He said the Judiciary has also commuted the sentences in many judicial cases and considered the maximum employment of other punishments in lieu of prison sentence.

Moreover, the Judiciary has enhanced the health and precautionary measures in penitentiaries and launched special plans for cooperation with the Health Ministry to monitor the health of prisoners, he added.

Some 2,600 inmates convicted of financial crimes have been released from prisons under the auspices of charity organizations, Esmaeili further noted.

Tens of thousands of prisoners across Iran have been granted leave after the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic in February.

Iran’s Health Ministry on Monday reported 203 new deaths from the novel coronavirus, one of the highest single-day tolls since the viral disease broke out in February.

At least 222,000 patients have recovered from the coronavirus infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across Iran.
