In comments at an online ministerial meeting of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region on Wednesday, Saeed Namaki said Iran has achieved remarkable success in producing the coronavirus vaccine.

“(The Iranian vaccine) passed the initial tests and (we) hope to reach promising stages for battling COVID-19,” the official added.

He also highlighted Iran’s success in synthesizing the medicine for the treatment of the coronavirus despite the pressure of cruel sanctions, saying two local pharmaceutical companies are going to supply hospitals across the country with Remdesivir, an antiviral drug used for the treatment of COVID-19.

Namaki also expressed Iran’s readiness for cooperation with regional nations in the fight against COVID-19, saying Tehran has repeatedly informed the friends, neighbors, and regional states that it is prepared to share experiences in containing the coronavirus pandemic.

In April, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani ordered the Health Ministry and the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology to focus efforts on the development of a vaccine for the novel coronavirus.

Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Satatri says local researchers in knowledge-based companies have been working on the most complicated pharmaceutical products to prevent and cure the novel coronavirus.

The virus spread rapidly to all 31 of Iran’s provinces soon after the country’s first cases – two deaths in the holy city of Qom – were announced three months ago, AFP reported.

“Ten provinces have reported no new coronavirus deaths in the past 24 hours and six others only one,” said Iran Health Ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour.

The southwestern province of Khuzestan was still classified as “red” – the highest level on the country’s color-coded risk scale, he said.

But the situation was “stable” in most other provinces, Jahanpour told a televised news conference.

Khuzestan was currently the only province still classified as red, he added.

The official had warned in previous days of a deteriorating situation in the provinces of Lorestan, North Khorasan, Kerman, Sistan and Baluchistan, and Kermanshah.

On Tuesday, he said 62 fatalities in the past 24 hours had taken the overall death toll in the country’s outbreak to 7,199.

Another 2,111 new infections were confirmed over the same period, he said, raising the total caseload to 124,603.

More than 97,170 of those hospitalized with the virus have been recovered and discharged, he added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to push for the lifting of the “cruel sanctions” that have impaired the ability of nations to deal with the coronavirus outbreak, Health Minister Saeed Namaki said.

In comments on Monday, Namaki expounded on the topics discussed in a recent online meeting he held with his counterparts from the WHO member states, saying he called on the WHO to intervene to lift the cruel sanctions against Iran and other nations that have hindered the acquisition of medicine and vaccine amid the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Namaki also noted that he highlighted Iran’s fair medical services in the videoconference, saying the Islamic Republic has provided free treatment for all people after the COVID-19 outbreak, even for foreign refugees.

The minister further noted that Iran has voiced support for the WHO as an organization that is connecting nations in the war on the coronavirus.

“We condemned the American move to weaken the World Health Organization, which happened for the first time,” he added.

US President Donald Trump has suspended the WHO funding over what he called the UN body’s “mismanagement” of the new coronavirus pandemic, in a move that has drawn widespread international condemnation.

The US president has repeatedly accused the WHO of siding with China and reliance on Chinese data, blaming it for “all sorts of false information about transmission and mortality” that was circulated amid initial reports.

The US contributed $400 million to the WHO last year, roughly 15% of its budget.
