IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – Iran’s former ambassador to Afghanistan believes Afghanistan will soon join the list of customers of Iran’s gas and this needs appropriate infrastructures.

Speaking to ILNA, Abolfazl Zohrehvand said the need of Afghanistan to Iran’s gas is definite, adding that Iran needs a stable and developed Afghanistan and development of Afghanistan is in fact a strategic goal for Iran, and by this means, we can activate the eastern part of the country.

On export of gas to Afghanistan, he said although it is true that Afghanistan has considerable gas reserves, they are currently unexploitable because Afghanistan currently providse major part of its fuel needs through imports, so Afghanistan’s need to Iran gas is a definite issue.

On providing security for the gas pipeline in Afghanistan, he said security is a soluble issue but this is capacities and infrastructure which should be created by the Afghans. Zohrehvand said the more Afghans prepare their infrastructures, the more activities and investment will be in gas sector.

He emphasized that Iran looks at gas export to Afghanistan as a developmental and security issue rather than just gas sale and its economic aspect.

High Consumption to Make Iran Gas Importer in 20 Years

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – The managing director of Iranian Fuel Conservation Company (IFCO) says with the current trend of gas consumption in the country, Iran may become a gas importer in 20 years and it may import 500m cubic meters of gas per day.

Speaking in a press conference, Ali Mobini Dehkordi said that currently the capacity of the country is incomparable with the past two decades, adding that capabilities and physical infrastructures have become stronger and bigger and if the country has good organizing and uses public capacity, and then it can cheat the impossible.

He then touched upon the outbreak of Coronavirus and sanctions, adding that these two issues have toughened the condition for the country, and unemployment has increased and it has also restricted and affected transfer of technology or financial resources, demand and supply and other factors in the business.

Mobini Dehkordi went on to say that country has currently big capacities for generating financial resources which can be materialized through saving the energy waste and conservation.

He further said that energy consumption should be managed in the country in order to generate financial resources.

He stipulated that currently private power stations have been activated in the country but the country should first find solution for managing the challenges.

Mobini Dehkordi noted that conservation of energy can be equal to 3 to 3.5 million barrels of crude oil and if we calculate every barrel of crude oil with the current price of $43 and post Coronavirus price of $65, it will become a noticeable amount of money which can be used in creating jobs and exploiting the resources.

He said that Iran in terms of offering energy is close to Germany but its consumption is six times more than this European state, adding that GDP of Germany, regarding its purchasing power is three times more than Iran, is six times more than Iran and it shows energy consumption in Iran serves the non-productive sector.

He further reiterated that energy consumption in Iran is three times more than the UAE, Turkey and China and two times of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, stating Iran’s energy consumption is even more than Russia.

Mobini Dehkordi said in the recent decade, Iran’s initial offering of energy has grown by 3 percent on average annually and due to its Gross Domestic Product, initial energy consumption has witnessed uptrend growth while the energy consumption growth in the world has been declining.

He noted that currently the energy consumption in the country is equal to 6.3m oil barrels per day, reiterating that by taking conservation plans, the country can save 50 percent in energy consumption.

He reiterated that if the current trend in gas consumption in the country continues with the same speed, then the country will have to import 500m cubic meter of gas per day in the next 20 years.

He noted that the amount of energy consumption in Iran is three times more than world average while the energy consumption is declining in the world and Iran should take serious measures in this regard.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The supervisor of the second refinery of Iran’s giant South Pars gas field has said the refinery’s gas production has increased by two percent in the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 20-July 21, 2020).

According to Hossein Baghban, the increase in the supply of feedstock to the refinery in the mentioned four-month period has come from the rise in the production capacity of the field’s phases 6, 7, and 8, which send their gas to the mentioned refinery for processing, ISNA reported.

Reducing the downtime of processing units and improving processing conditions are also on the agenda to realize the goals of further increasing the refinery’s output in the current Iranian year (ending March 2021).

He said that overhaul operations and the realization of all overhaul programs based on schedule are among the important activities planned for the current year to sustain production in phases 2 and 3.

South Pars Gas Complex is comprised of 14 gas refineries in southern Iran that are currently processing the gas extracted from the country’s giant South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf.

The mentioned gas field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which, called South Pars, are in Iran’s territorial waters. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, called North Dome, are situated in Qatar’s territorial waters.

Currently divided into 24 standard phases in the Iranian side, the field is estimated to contain a significant amount of natural gas, accounting for about eight percent of the world’s reserves, and approximately 18 billion barrels of condensate.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior official at Tehran Chamber of Commerce has said that Turkey prefers to import natural gas from Iran instead of Russia, and this a good chance for Tehran to seize the Turkish market.

Currently, Turkey imports gas from Azerbaijan, Russia, and Iran through the pipeline, and Russia owned 55 percent of the Turkish market while the remaining 45 percent is shared by Iran and Azerbaijan, said Head of Energy Commission of Tehran Chamber of Commerce Hamid-Reza Salehi, ILNA reported on July 15.

Salehi exclusively told ILNA, “The resumption of gas imports from Iran after a 3-month hiatus should be considered auspicious.”

Iran’s natural gas exports to Turkey halted due to an explosion that hit the pipeline on Turkish soil on March 31.

Salehi referred to some problems facing Russia’s “Blue Stream pipeline” that transfer gas to Turkey stressing that under the existing circumstances, Iran “must develop its liquid petroleum gas (LPG) in order to influence the Turkish market.”

Presently Ankara imports LPG by ship from the United States, Qatar, and Algeria. However, Iran can be a better actor “by selling its gas to Ankara on better terms,” said the official.

Salehi urged the need to use ‘economic diplomacy’ to be a winner in the economic competitions.

Relations between Russia and Turkey, one of Moscow’s biggest consumers of natural gas, have been patchy for the past years and are beset by the number of issues, including conflicts in Syria and Libya as well as the status of Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia.

On July 10, a Turkish court annulled a 1934 cabinet decree that had turned Hagia Sophia into a museum, paving the way for its use again as a mosque after 85 years, the Turkish official News Agency, Anadolu, reported.

After centuries of service as a church under the Byzantine Empire, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II following his conquest of Istanbul in 1453.

In 1935, Hagia Sophia was converted into a museum.

Reconversion of the Hagia Sophia into a mosque received different reactions in the international community. It was welcomed by Muslim countries but hurt some others.

Russia’s Blue Stream pipeline, launched in the early 2000s, moved 11.1 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas to Turkey last year out of a total of 15.5 bcm exported.

Mohammad Reza Julaee said exporting gas is underway in compliance with all previous commitments of the two countries.

Natural gas exports from Iran to Turkey came to a halt on March 31 after an explosion and fire at a pipeline on the Turkish side of the border.

The explosion occurred near the Bazargan border crossing on Turkish soil. Turkey had undertaken to repair the pipeline and compensate for the damages.

In a visit to Istanbul in mid-June, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called for efforts to restart the export of natural gas to Turkey after carrying out necessary repairs to the pipeline.

Sanctions Are “No Problem” for Turkey’s Imports of Iran Gas

IRAN NEWS ECONOMIC DESK

TEHRAN – National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Dispatching Director Mehdi Jamshidi Dana says sanctions are not problems for Turkey to import Iran’s gas because Turkey has received the U.S. waiver for gas import from Iran.

Speaking to ILNA, Jamshidi Dana elaborated the latest development on Iran-Turkey gas deal and repair of the gas pipeline which has been exploded in March.

He said that since the explosion has happened in Turkey, the country is responsible to fix it but Turkey is delaying because of the current condition and drop in consumption ,and it has resorted to the force-majeure clause in the agreement with Iran.

Jamshidi Dana reiterated that Iran has rejected the force-majeure clause because it believes Turkey is resorting to the clause in order to escape fines. He added that for years Turkey has decreased its gas imports due to the beginning of heat but the country decreases its gas imports in a way not to be fined because according to the take-or-pay agreement, Turkey is obliged to get at least certain amount of gas stipulated in the agreement or else it should pay its price.

He further said that Turkey has diverse energy basket in the country and it receives natural gas via pipeline and LNG by vessels and it is natural that the country uses different sources according to its economic condition.

Jamshidi Dana noted that the outbreak of Coronavirus was another reason to slow down Turkey’s effort to fix the exploded gas pipeline.

He reiterated that so far, Turkey has been committed to its contract obligations, adding that it is logical that Turkey uses cheaper gas because of slump in its revenues in tourism industry.

On renewing contract with Turkey for gas exports, he pointed to the start of negotiations, adding that the talks are moving slowly for renewal of the contract which will expire in 2025. He further said the company’s studies show that imports of gas from Iran have advantages for Turkey, noting that he does now know the future of the new contract but undoubtedly, Turkey cannot snub importing gas from Iran.

Jamshidi reiterated that Iran is after a win-win contract with Turkey and all options are under study in NIGC.
