TEHRAN (Iran News) – Ex-Esteghlal sporting director Ali Khatir has been banned from all football activities until further notice.

The punishment was handed out by the ethics committee of the Iran Football Federation.

He has been accused of damaging credibility of Iran football.

Last year, Khatir played a role in hiring Italian coach Andrea Stramaccioni as Esteghlal coach.

Iran to Appeal against FIFA Ruling on Wilmots

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran Football Federation will lodge an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding former national team head coach Marc Wilmots financial case, the federation’s legal team said.

On Monday, FIFA’s Players’ Status Committee (PSC) ruled that the Iranian federation should pay €6.2 million in compensation to the Belgian who parted ways with Iran last December.

The international football governing body gave the Iranian federation 30 days to pay the sum to its ex-manager.

Meanwhile, Mohammad-Mehdi Nabi, the secretary-general of the federation, said a task force, comprising legal experts, is established in an effort to overturn the FIFA’s verdict in CAS.

Wilmots, 51, had only been in charge of Iran’s national team for six months, replacing Portuguese Carlos Queiroz in June 2019.

Iran began its campaign at the 2022 World Cup Asian qualifiers under the Belgian with easy victories over Hong Kong (2-0) and Cambodia (14-0).

However, a couple of below-par performances saw Iran suffer back-to-back defeats at the hands of Bahrain (1-0) and Iraq (2-1), leaving the Asian powerhouse in third place of Group C – trailing Iraq and Bahrain by five and three points respectively, albeit with a game in hand – before the qualifiers were halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Iran Football Federation Cancels Elective General Assembly

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran’s (FFIRI) elective General Assembly was rescheduled to a later date.

FIFA had already asked the elections should be delayed until FFIRI amends its current statutes.

The football’s world governing body had said it would not allow Iran to stage the elections.

On Thursday, the federation announced that the elective General Assembly has been deferred until a later time.

The elections were due to be held on March 15.

Iran Football Federation Made Deal with Skocic

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Based on the lastest agreement made by Iran football federation, Dragan Skocic will be named the new head coach of Iran national football team by tomorrow.

The Iran football federation had previously negotiated with Iranian coaches Ali Daei and Amir Ghalenoei but it has reportedly reached an agreement with the Croatian coach, Skocic.

The contract draft is prepared and he will be named Team Melli head coach by tomorrow.

Skocic stepped down from his role as Sanat Naft coach a couple of days ago.

The 51-year-old coach took charge of Malavan in 2013 and has also coached Foolad and Khooneh be Khooneh.

Team Melli will host Hong Kong on March 26 in Tehran and meet Cambodia five days later in an away match in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification.

Iran will face Bahrain and Iraq on June 4 and 9 in Tehran.

Heidar Baharvand appointed to IFF acting president

TEHRAN (Iran News) – By the decision of members of the Presiding Board of Iran Football Federation (IFF), Heidar Baharvand replaced Former President of Iran Football Federation Mehdi Taj.

Today, the Presiding Board of Iran Football Federation held a session following the resignation of Mehdi Taj from his position as president of the Iran Football Federation in order to decide on his successor.

After holding a session with the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Masoud Soltanifar, members of the Presiding Board of the Federation selected “Heidar Baharvand” as acting president of Iran Football Federation.

Accordingly, Vice Chairman and current head of Iran Pro League Organization will follow up on the current affairs of the federation.

Mehdi Taj Submits Resignation

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Mehdi Taj has submitted his resignation as the president of Iranian football federation due to suffering from heart attacks.

Confirming the news on resignation, the federation’s spokesman Amirmahdi Alavi said on Sunday that “unfortunately, after the last heart attack that happened in Turkey and treatments that Taj received in that country, he suffered from a second heart attack on Wednesday.”

“Given the occurred problems and the doctors’ recommendation to avoid stress and heavy activity, he decided to resign and hand over the responsibility to the vice-president according to the federation’s statute.”

As Tehran Times has reported, he was rushed to hospital last week and the doctors recommended him stepping off from his role. Mehdi Taj has suffered heart problems related to the stress of management twice in one year and that ended to his resignation.

Mehdi Taj Meets QFA President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa

President of Iran Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, and President of Qatar Football Association (QFA) Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al-Thani held a meeting in Doha, Qatar on Saturday.

Taj has traveled to Doha to attend the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup final match between European champion Liverpool and Brazil’s Flamengo.

Two parties emphasized on mutual cooperation to further develop the sport in both countries.

Taj and Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa also discussed about the bilateral cooperation for the 2020 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Stramaccioni, Esteghlal Go through Dialogue

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Italian coach Andrea Stramaccioni announced on Sunday that he and his staff are terminating the contract with the Esteghlal football team but the club’s managers are still trying to find a way to continue work with the successful Italian coach.

Under the guidance of Stramaccioni, Eteghlal could get back to the top of Iran Professional League’s table after some four years. Almost all the experts inside the country praise the work of the Italian coach in creating a unified attacking team.

Being under unilateral US sanctions, there are limitations for transferring money outside Iran and Esteghlal has failed to pay the wage of coaching staff according to the contract. This made the coaching staff, also including Marco Caser, Sebastian Eduardo Leto and Omar Danesi, to announce unilateral termination of the contract on Sunday.

The news was a great shock to Esteghlal fans and the issue has become a trend on Twitter among Iranian netizens.

Reports indicate that Stramaccioni and Leto have left Tehran early on Monday.

In an official statement on Monday, Eteghlal appreciated the efforts of the Italian coach, highlighting that the club has fulfilled all its obligations under the contract. The statement said that the club has paid the wage of the coach but because of some problems in his bank account, the transaction has not completed.

It said that club managers have failed to make any contact with the Italian coach on Sunday but negotiations are underway with his lawyers. One of the lawyers has suggested decreasing the contract term from two to one year which has been rejected by the club, said the statement, adding that the remaining salary of the coach will be paid on Monday.

“According to the documents, Mr. Stramaccioni is not entitled to unilaterally terminate the contract and Esteghlal FC is still considering the agreement as valid and is ready to solve the problems in a face-to-face meeting as before,” noted the statement.

Marc Wilmots Talks about Future of Team Melli

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran national football team head coach Marc Wilmots says that he is facing an intolerable situation in Team Melli.

Iranian federation and Marc Wilmots have reportedly reached a deadlock after Team Melli’s poor results in the 2022 World Cup qualification.

Then, local media reported that the federation is going to terminate Wilmots’s contract by mutual consent.

After that, Wilmots has reacted to the rumors on his Twitter account, posting a message about his future in the Asian team.

“I have taken note of the rumors published in the Iranian press, which are incorrect. The truth is that Iran football federation has created serious contractual violations for me and my staff. We face an intolerable situation,” Wilomots wrote.

“My lawyers work on the case and I don’t want to comment more on the issue,” the Belgian coach added later.

Under guidance of Wilmots, Iran have suffered back-to-back defeats against Bahrain and Iraq in the 2022 World Cup qualification.

Team Melli also sit in third place in Group C with six points, five points adrift of leaders Iraq.

The Iranian media reports suggest that former Persepolis coach Branko Ivankovic is a possible candidate to succeed Wilmots.

Iran Football Federation to Negotiate with Branko Ivankovic

Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) will negotiate with ex-Persepolis coach Branko Ivankovic over taking charge of Iran national football team.

According To Iran News, Local media reported that the Iranian officials will negotiate with the Croatian coach in Zagreb on Monday.

Marc Wilmots’s team lost to Bahrain and Iraq at the Qatar 2022 World Cup Asian qualifiers within a month.

The Belgian coach left Iran immediately after return to Tehran from Amman and the Iranian football fans has accused Wilmots of irresponsibility.

Speaking to Tasnim on Sunday, Ivankovic has denied the speculations linking him with Team Melli but it seems the Iranian football federation is reluctant to continue its cooperation with Wilmots.

“I didn’t receive any call from anyone and I didn’t have any negotiation,” he told Tasnim news agency.

Ivankovic has an excellent track record as a coach in Iran, since he helped Iran U-23 football team win the 2002 Asian Games.

He also led Team Melli to a third place in the 2004 AFC Asian Cup in China and also booked a place in the 2006 FIFA World Cup with Team Melli.

The 65-year-old Croat also won three consecutive titles in Iran Professional League with Persepolis.
