Head of Iran Fisheries Organization (IFO) said on Wednesday that sturgeon fish farming had been expanded to cover 20 out of 31 provinces of Iran, adding that a total of 128 caviar fish farming was operating across the country

Nabiollah Khunmirzaei said that Iran had produced six tons of aquaculture caviar and 2,800 tons of caviar fish meat in the year ending in March 201, Presstv Reported.

“We have a serious plan in the IFO for aqua farming of caviar fishes so that we could carry out this activity in all provinces,” said Khunmirzaei, adding, “Nation-wide studies have been conducted on this purpose.”

The official said Iran eyes to reach an output of 100 tons of caviar and 10,000 tons of caviar fish meat by 2025.

The comments came a week after Iran and four other countries sharing the coast along the Caspian decided to renew a five-year ban on caviar hunting until the end of 2020.

The decision came in a summit of fishery chiefs of Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan held in the Iranian capital Tehran.

Khunmirzaei said Iran had called for a longer ban on sturgeon fishing in the Caspian, something he said was opposed by others in the summit.

“The view of the IRI (Iran) is that the ban should continue for more than a year but a single-year ban was agreed because some countries opposed the multi-year ban,” he said, adding that Iran would host a similar meeting next year to decide on the ban.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – The value of Iran’s annual seafood exports will reach $600 million by March 2020, indicating a 20-percent growth year-on-year, said the secretary-general of Aquatics’ Production and Trade Union of Iran.

Ali-Akbar Khodaei added the figure marks a record in Iran’s annual seafood exports.

According to statistics by Iran Fisheries Organization, he said, the country produced 1.2 million tons of seafood in the year to March 2019.

The official noted that this comes as Iran’s production of aquatic products, during March 21-October 22, 2019, was 15 percent higher than the figure for the 12-month period to March 2019.

The reason for the country’s increased output has been a good investment in the fields of cage fish farming and farming sturgeon as well as cold and warm water fishes, Khodaei said.

He put Iran’s shrimp production since March 2019 at 34,000 tons, adding the figure is expected to reach 47,000 tons by March 2020, which would not exceed that of the same period last year.

The official said Iran exported 30,000 tons of shrimp in the year to March 2019, valued at $150 million.

He added the country exported seafood worth $525 million in the 12-month time span to March 2019.

Khodaei predicted that Iran will export seafood valued at $1 billion within three years, given the current growing trend reflected by the country’s production and overseas sales of fisheries.

“In light of the country’s capacities in seafood production, this amount of exports is quite accessible. Iran has a capacity to export shrimp worth $1 billion. To achieve this, we are required to raise our annual shrimp exports to 200,000 tons from the present figure of 30,000 tons.”

China is the main destination of Iran’s seafood products, as half of the country’s annual overseas sales are destined for the East Asian state, he noted.

“We annually sell up to 30,000 tons of shrimp and 50,000 tons of fish to China.”

He added, however, Iran’s seafood imports from China hardly reach 10,000 tons per year.

The official listed other target markets of Iranian seafood as the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

“We also export 5,000 tons of aquatic products, mainly shrimp and caviar, to European countries per year.”

He described Russia as a potentially lucrative market for Iran’s sea products, regretting that, traditionally, Iranians have failed to gain a firm foothold in this market.

A number of obstacles have always hindered Iran’s success in Russia’s seafood market, such as the Russians’ interest in working with major international companies, Khodaei said.

He noted that Turkey has been able to put in a good performance in terms of capturing the Russian market as the country has a concentrated trade structure and its products are exported by one or two companies.

Iran lacks such a structure in its aquatic trade and production sectors, he said, expressing hope that the country’s aquatic products would gradually find their way into the Russian market.

Hossein Abdolhay, IFO’s deputy head for aquaculture, added in the year to March 2019, the country produced 1.26 tons of aquatics, IRNA reported.

This figure showed that in that year, the organization was ahead of the target set in the Sixth Five-Year Development Economic Plan (2016-2021).

He noted that over the past few years, the Iranian government has paid special attention to the domestic fisheries sector, particularly the field of aquaculture.

The Iranian Agricultural Jihad Minister Mahmoud Hojjati normally unveils one or two aquaculture projects or visits their sites in his provincial trips, Abdolhay said.

“Iran’s production of fisheries and aquaculture currently is in a good status. All provinces are active in this field.”

He put the country’s aquaculture output at 138,000 tons in 2012, saying that the figure reached 489,000 tons in the year to March 2019.”

The IFO deputy head noted that in 2012, Iran farmed 167,000 tons of warm water fish and 140,000 tons of cold water fish, adding the figures amounted to close to 200,000 tons and 170,000 tons, respectively, in the year to March 2019.

In 2012, Iran’s production of shrimp and sturgeon fish stood at 12,000 tons and 500 tons and, he said, adding this comes as in the year to March 2019, the figures reached 47,000 tons and 5,800 tons respectively.
