TEHRAN (Iran News) – Almaty of Kazakhstan is poised to host an exclusive exhibition of Iranian products during July 1-3, according to the head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO).

Alireza Peyman-Pak said that buildings and new technologies in the construction industry, agricultural machinery, technical and engineering services, oil, gas and petrochemical, industrial machinery, food industry, educational products and services, mining machinery, medicine and medical equipment, home appliances, furniture, and wooden products, and health tourism are some of the areas in which Iranian companies will showcase their products and achievements in the exhibit.

Kazakhstan is one of the major export destinations of Iranian products in Central Asia. Iran and Kazakhstan’s positive political relations, as well as easy access to each other’s markets through road, rail, air and sea, have created a very high potential for the expansion of trade ties between the two countries.

“Kazakhstan has a high potential in importing goods and export products from our country; Therefore, this exhibition is a good opportunity for the country’s businessmen and exporters,” Peyman-Pak said.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that the recent turmoil in Iran and the fact that its economy is pressured, is mainly a result of the illegal sanctions the US imposed on the Islamic Republic after unilaterally withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal.

“Problems in Iran are very serious, to a large extent because of the US sanctions that were imposed on that country absolutely illegally, because the Americans withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal and are seeking to make others implement it,” he told the Mediterranean Dialogues (MED) conference in Rome on Friday.

Lavrov also noted that the US scheme, which is meant to provoke public disconnect in Iran, was also used in Venezuela.

“If the US wants Iran economy to be pressured and instigate people’s discontent, we see such a scheme being used in Venezuela. It is a pattern.”

In May 2018, the US scrapped the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that had been endorsed by the UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump has unleashed the “toughest ever” sanctions against Tehran, notably targeting its key oil exports.

In mid-November, the Iranian government rationed fuel in order to prevent the country from becoming reliant on gasoline imports in the future amid the US economic sanctions.

The move prompted protests in a number of cities that went largely peaceful, but turned violent when armed riotous elements took advantage of the situation to vandalize public and state property, and attack civilians and security forces alike.

Many of the rioters were found to have links to the US spy agency CIA as well as terrorist groups, royalists and separatists.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – US sanctions have provided Iran with a rare opportunity to revive its textile and clothing industry which is as old as its history.

There is a big opportunity for existing textile and apparel plants to expand and for new entrants to set up shop, especially in the wake of a stepped-up crackdown which the government launched about a year ago against smuggled clothing.

Last year, Iranian producers were so buoyed by the measure that they replenished the market with local quality brands during the period leading up to the new Persian year, usually marked by a shopping spree, Presstv reported.

The Iranian rial’s depreciation has provided the additional boon by cutting imports and smuggling which are the nagging problem of the industry.

Smuggled clothing costs Iran and its apparel producers some $2.6 billion in lost revenues a year, deputy director of Iran Textile Exports and Manufacturers Association Majid Nami said in Tehran Tuesday. To put this in perspective, Iran’s official imports of clothing is put at a minuscule $60 million.

Retailers in Tehran and other major cities have a teeming emporium of contraband clothing which has thrived for more than a decade.

By comparison, the share and growth of the textile and clothing industry in the economy of Iran and Turkey, which have dominated the geopolitical and economic landscape of the Middle East for centuries, have gone in opposite directions.

According to World Bank data, cited by state news agency IRNA, textile and clothing accounted for 20% of Iran’s economy in 1991 against 15% for Turkey’s. By 2009, this share dropped to 3% in Iran and rose to 17% in Turkey.

For more than 100 years until the early 1990s, the textile industry remained one of the largest sources of employment within Iran’s non-petroleum sector.

The first industrialized textile factories were established in the 19th century during the Safavid dynasty. Despite remaining a cottage industry, textile production continued to play an important role in the economy.

The industry consists of companies engaged in spinning, weaving, knitting, dyeing, and printing, and of finishing plants that process yarns from natural and synthetic fibers to produce a variety of woven and knitted fabrics. The major textile items are blankets, machine-made carpets, handmade carpets, serge, as well as fabrics and garments.

The discovery of oil resulted in the formation of an economy focused primarily on the development of the petroleum industry. In recent years, however, the limitations and harmful effects of an oil-independent economy have prompted Iranian officials to think about streamlining the sources of revenue.

The US government’s decision last year to choke off Iran’s oil revenues has given added momentum to reviving traditional industries, with the textile sector being the prime focus of the push.

Yazd is the capital of Iran’s textile industry, whereas many 2,000 factories manufacture traditional products, cotton fabric, and synthetic fibers and spin cotton yarn and polyester fibers.

In 1994, there were more than 40,000 plants operating in the Iranian textile industry, more than five times the current number. Iran’s textile industry is overwhelmingly dominated by privately-owned small- and medium-sized firms.

Iran’s northwestern neighbor is currently among the world’s most important textile and apparel manufacturing countries, with annual sales of $27 billion which plans to raise to $100 billion by 2023.

After vehicles, clothing is Turkeys’ most successful export product. In 2017, ready-to-wear clothing accounted for about 18 percent of Turkey’s $157 billion exports.

Iran textile and clothing industry exports last year stood just above $1 billion, according to the deputy minister of industry, mine, and trade Saeed Zarandi.

Across the country, there are 7,900 textile and apparel units with 260,000 employees. Officials say this figure can double or triple with sufficient government backing.

The road, however, is not without hurdles despite the best opportunity in many decades beckoning.

Before the sanctions, the government was hoping to modernize Iran’s textile industry through joint ventures with foreign companies in Japan, Germany, China, and South Korea.

It planned to extend low-interest loans to the Iranian private textile companies for purchasing required equipment, raw materials, and technical expertise.

Local producers now say the government’s crackdown on contraband should not be spasmodic, where smugglers lurk in the fringes and wait for a letup to resume their illegal trade.

They also face a shortage of raw materials and foreign exchange. One primordial drawback of Iran’s textile industry is its reliance on overseas for raw material.

“Our main problem today is the shortage of liquidity and the lack of raw materials. When a manufacturing unit does not have sufficient liquidity, it certainly cannot source its needs for raw material at non-official foreign exchange rates,” Reza Naqshineh, a producer of scarves, told Tasnim news agency.

For raw materials such as yarn, local companies do not directly deal with foreign suppliers. They have to source their needs from intermediaries who further inflate the prices.

“Most of the raw materials are controlled by intermediaries and manufacturers have to source them at very high costs in order to start production,” Majid Eftekhari, a member of the Association of Iran Textile Industries, said.

The same goes for imports of technology and spare parts to replace outdated and aging machinery.

Speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony on the occasion of the 23rd National Exports Day anniversary, Hosseinzadeh stressed the important role of international exhibitions and the first exclusive exhibition of EAEU products in boosting exports.

“After producing domestic products, these products should be introduced to the target markets, and international exhibitions both inside the country and abroad will be a great help in this regard,” the official said.

Pointing out the fact that Iran is trying to increase the number of international exhibitions as planned, Hosseinzadeh added, “Since one of the main priorities of the Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade is promoting exports to the neighboring countries, this year nearly 40 international exhibitions have been held in the country.”

The industry ministry is also planning to provide the organizers of such exhibitors with necessary financial assistance.

“Overall, exhibitions are directly and indirectly contributing to the country’s economic boom, he said.

Speaking in a press conference held at the place of Tehran Permanent International Fairground on Tuesday, Bahman Hosseinzadeh said: “This year has been named as the year of “Pickup in Production” by the Supreme Leader and to materialize this objective we have supporting domestic production on top of our agenda”.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – An Iranian business leader says Iran exports to neighboring Iraq have decreased over the past two months amid escalated protests across the Arab country.

Seyyed Hamid Hosseini, who serves as the secretary-general of Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce, said on Saturday that the total value of Iran exports to Iraq between March and October this year had declined by $540 million compared to the similar period in 2018.

He said protests and riots that began in Iraq since early October was the main reason for the plummeting export figures as he insisted that the value of Iranian shipments sent to the Arab country had increased year-on-year in the first six months of the Iranian calendar year ending on September 23.

“Borders are open, movement continues and exports keep going on but recession in the Iraqi market and insecurity has affected the shipments and have caused our exports to decline,” said Hosseini in an interview with the Fars news agency.

What was initially a peaceful protest movement against corruption in Iraq has now turned into violent clashes and rioting in major cities across the country. More than 400 people have been killed in the riots which authorities in Baghdad blame on certain foreign governments.

Iraq is a major trade partner for Iran with authorities aiming to reach a target of $20 billion in Iran’s exports to the Arab country in the near future.

Hosseini said exports to Iraq in the first seven months of the Iranian calendar year ending October 23 had topped $5.117 billion, down more than 11 percent compared to the last year.

He said, however, that demand for Iranian goods and services in Iraq’s semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan had surged after Turkey, a main exporter to the region, began its all-out military intervention into Kurdish-dominated areas in neighboring Syria last month.

Deputy Managing Director of Iran’s Small Industries and Industrial Parks Organization (ISIPO) Asqar Masaheb said on Monday that Iranian SMEs exports worth $1.5 billion in the first seven months of the current year, adding that the figure stood at $1,040,000,000 in the corresponding period in last year.

This volume of products was exported by 900 industrial and production units based in industrial parks, he added.

As compared to the same period of last year, the number of exporting companies has reduced this year due to the export restrictions but their export volume registered a hike, Masaheb added.

Some $1,030,000,000 worth of products were exported by SMEs in the first half of the current year (from March 21 to Sept. 22), showing more than 30 percent hike as compared to the last year’s corresponding period.

Food products, home appliances, polymer and plastic materials, chemicals and leather products were of the main products exported by these companies in this period, he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he pointed to the knowledge-based companies and startups in industrial parks and put the number of knowledge-based firms in these parks at 312.

He further noted that ISIPO has thrown its weight behind knowledge-based companies and startups in three fields of infrastructure, development of technology, commercialization and market development.

On Saturday, Iranian Vice-President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari censured the country’s dependence on oil revenues, and urged for more technology-oriented economic activities.

Speaking on a visit to the Northern province of Mazandaran, Sattari criticized oil economies for their incapability, saying that nowadays, the price of a barrel of oil is lower than a bottle of perfume.

“Development with an oil economy is impossible, and we must all realize that dependency on oil revenues will get nowhere,” he added.

The official urged for a technology-based economy, saying that “today, no country is going to oil-rich countries for technology”.

The vice president pointed out that pharmaceuticals is one of the most important areas that knowledge-based companies are involved in Iran, adding that 98% of the country’s human medicines are produced domestically.

He added big steps have been taken by the knowledge-based firms in the area of veterinary pharmacy and nutrition industry.

Last month, Governor of the Central bank of Iran (CBI) Abdolnasser Hemmati announced that the country has further reduced its reliance on oil revenues to bring the share of the income earned though crude sales in the budget to less than 30 percent.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Jafar Sargheyni said on Sunday that sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran increased Iran’s steel exports volume in the international arena.

He pointed to the US failure in imposition of sanctions on Iran’s mineral industries and steel sector in the current year (started March 21, 2019) and said, “Iran’s steel exports volume to hit 12 million tons by the end of the current year (March 20, 2020).”

The US imposition of sanctions on Iran’s mineral sector has failed, he said, adding, “although the Minister of Industry had predicted that country’s steel exports volume will hit 10 million tons by yearend, statistics show that more than six million tons of steel has been exported in the first half of the current year (from March 21 to Sept. 22).”

Under such circumstances, Iran’s export volume of steel products will hit 12 million tons by the yearend, the deputy minister of industry added.

Sargheyni also revealed the exports growth of copper and added, “in tandem with the exports growth of steel, it is predicted that copper will register a 10 to 15 percent growth”

Totally, exports value of mines and mineral industries will hit $10 billion by the yearend, he stated.
