TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran has launched the first phase of a major power plant in the country’s main hub for producing natural gas, Asaluyeh.

In an order issued via videoconference on Thursday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani opened the steam unit of the combined-cycle power plant in Asaluyeh, in southern Iran, on the coast of the Persian Gulf.

The facility feeds 160 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Iran’s national power grid, reported IRNA, adding that the total capacity of the power plant would reach 480 MW once all units come online.

The power plant has been designed and launched by MAPNA, Iran’s largest energy construction company, which also owns the facility.

The IRNA report said the steam unit of the power plant is the first in Iran that enjoys a fully home-made distributed control system (DCS).

MAPNA has been behind many construction and renovation schemes in Iranian electricity factories in previous years, including the launch of steam units in the so-called combined-cycle facilities where the steam is raised through using the exhaust heat from the gas-fired combustion turbines.

The company has used 150 contractors for the construction of the Asaluyeh power plant, a process that started in 2016 and created 800 permanent jobs and led to indirect employment for 1,500 people.

Asaluyeh, a small city in Iran’s Bushehr Province, is key to Iran’s massive natural gas sector where various refineries and petrochemical units run on gas pumped from the South Pars gas field, the world’s largest natural gas reserve, which is shared between Iran and Qatar.

President Rouhani on Thursday also launched another electricity and water project in Bushehr Province during the videoconference event.

He made the remarks on Sunday and added, “presently, Iran renewable power plants have been launched in all provinces of the country.” Iran News quotes the report.

He put the total production capacity of solar and wind power plants installed in the nationwide at 841 megawatts and this production capacity has been realized by 115 private sector companies.

To date, about 3,500 solar power plants have been installed across the country, he said, adding, “in addition, construction operation of 2,500 solar power plants is underway in disadvantaged and deprived areas of the country.”

Installation of solar power plants in the country has generated employment opportunities for about 53,420 people per annum, Iran’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA) Spokesman Jafar Mohammadnejad Sigaroudi added.

Earlier it was said that the Ministry of Energy is determined to increase production capacity of renewable energies in the country up to 4,000 megawatts before the termination of the 12th government, he added.

Presently, Islamic Republic of Iran enjoys rich resources of fossil and renewable energies, he said, adding, “about 60,000-megawatt wind energy potential has so far been identified in the country.”

Elsewhere in its remarks, the ministry revealed the identification of 150,000-megawatt solar energy for the construction of solar energy farms and added, “in spite of existence of 82,000-megawatt of hydroelectricity and nuclear power plants, very high potential has been created in the country in using renewable energy.”

Tehran (Iran News) – Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian plans to inaugurate 8 major power projects in the southwestern province of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad on Saturday.

In a statement released on Friday, the Iran Power Generation Transmission and Distribution Management Company (Tavanir) announced that during Ardakanian’s visit to Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province on Saturday, the executive operations of three major power projects will begin and 5 large-scale transmission and distribution projects will be connected to the national grid.

In addition to the major projects, 40 other electricity distribution projects will become operational simultaneously, according to the statement.

In February 2018, Ardakanian highlighted the country’s self-sufficiency in the area of power generation and said the Islamic Republic is the top producer of electricity in the Middle East.

About 90 percent of power generation equipment, even complicated parts like turbines and generators, are currently manufactured inside the country, the energy minister told reporters at the time.

He added that Iran’s capabilities in the area of power generation have developed over the past four decades so much that the country has become the top producer of electricity in the region.

“At present, we have energy exchanges with all the countries that share land borders with us,” he said.
