TEHRAN (Iran News) – The Iranian Energy Ministry has adopted a plan to meet Afghanistan’s need to electricity, Tehran’s Ambassador to Kabul Bahador Aminian said on Wednesday.

“The two countries have many opportunities to promote ties in different fields, so if Afghanistan intends to develop these ties, Iran would be the best option,” Aminian said on Wednesday on the sidelines of “Water, Electricity and Renewable Energy Exhibition” in Kabul, reported Fars News Agency.

Pointing to the importance of Afghanistan’s market for the Iranian private sector, he added, “Statistics indicate that Afghanistan is importing about $3 million annually, so if the country provides a broader market for Iranian goods, Iranian producers are willing to cooperate with Afghan partners.”

The Water, Electricity and Renewable Energy Exhibition was inaugurated in Afghanistan’s capital on Tuesday.

Referring to the importance of developing Iran’s trade relations in the region as well as expanding non-oil exports, Deputy Industry Minister Hamid Zadboum, who heads the Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) said that based on this important issue, the exhibition is being held in Kabul.

The opening ceremony of the specialized exhibition was held in the presence of officials and businessmen from both countries, he added.

A total of 100 Iranian companies are present in the exhibition to introduce their capabilities in related fields in order to develop the export of technical and engineering services and related industries to Afghanistan, Zadboum said.

He added that a 120-member delegation of Iranian businessmen in the field of energy and municipal services will have fruitful talks with the Afghan side during their four-day stay in Afghanistan.

The TPO head said that one of the goals of the exhibition is to develop urban diplomacy with Afghan cities.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Washington renewed a waiver for Iraq to continue importing Iranian electricity, a US State Department official said.

“The Secretary granted this brief extension of the waiver to allow time for the formation of a credible government,” the official said, referring to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and added that the waiver would expire on May 26, according to Reuters.

Washington has repeatedly extended the exemption for Baghdad to use crucial Iranian energy supplies for its power grid, for periods of 90 or 120 days.

Earlier this month, Iraq’s president named intelligence chief Mustafa al-Kadhimi as prime minister-designate, the third person tapped to lead Iraq in just 10 weeks as it struggles to replace a government that fell last year after months of deadly protests.

“Once that government is in place, the Secretary will reassess whether to renew the waiver and for how long,” the US State Department official said.

The official added that the waiver applied only to electricity and referred to the Treasury Department for transactions related to Iranian natural gas imports.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Spokesman of Iranian Ministry of Energy Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi said that Iran has exported more electricity to neighboring countries this year as compared to last year.

According to the country’s 6th Five-Year Socioeconomic and Cultural Development Plan, the ministry must reduce the losses of the country’s electricity network to less than 10 percent, he added.

Presently, the ministry has managed to decrease the rate of electricity network’s losses to less than 10 percent, he said, adding, “accordingly, the trend of nationwide electricity network’s losses last year was on a completely downward trajectory and this will continue this year [started March 21, 2020].”

Turning to the current situation of the country amid the coronavirus pandemic, he stated, “the Ministry of Energy has taken measures to prevent power officials from referring to subscribers’ residences for registering power meters consumed.”

He pointed to the export of electricity by the Islamic Republic of Iran to neighboring countries and added, “based on the commitments made in this regard, Iran’s export of electricity will continue on a regular basis this year.”
