TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said the country has urged the Baghdad government to punish those attackers behind Wednesday assault on the Iran consulate in the Iraqi city of Najaf.

In a statement released on Thursday morning, Mousavi decried the attack on the consulate and said the Iraqi ambassador to Tehran has been officially informed of the Islamic Republic’s strong protest over the issue.

The Iranian spokesman further urged the Baghdad government to deal decisively with the attackers behind the assault on Iran consulate.

Mousavi also recalled the responsibility and duties of the Iraqi government to protect diplomatic missions and diplomats.

Anti-government protesters stormed and set the Iranian consulate ablaze in the southern city of Najaf on Wednesday, drawing condemnation from Iraq’s government, as the political turmoil continues to escalate.

Staff at the Iranian consulate evacuated safely before the attack in the holy city, which was later placed under a curfew, state media reported, according to the Al Jazeera.

On Thursday, the Iraqi state news agency quoted the foreign ministry as condemning the attack on the diplomatic facility.

One protester was killed and at least 35 people were wounded when police fired live ammunition to prevent them from entering the building, a police official told The Associated Press.

The incident marked an escalation in the demonstrations that have raged in Baghdad and across mostly Shiite southern Iraq since October 1.

The protesters accuse the government of being hopelessly corrupt and complain of poor public services and high unemployment.

As Iraqi state news agency said early on Thursday, citing the foreign ministry, Wednesday’s attack was ‘aimed at damaging the historical relations between Iraq and Iran and with rest of the countries.’

“Diplomatic missions operating in Iraq are highly respected and appreciated,” it added, stressing that the incident did not reflect Iraq’s perspective.

Iraq condemns the act of rioters who stormed and set Iran’s consulate in blazing in the southern city of Najaf on Wednesday. The spokesperson of the Iranian Foreign Ministry required the Iraqi government to give a firm response to these acts of violence.

Abbas Mousavi reminded the Iraqi government is in charge of providing the security of diplomatic sites in that country, adding that Iran will announce its protest against the event to Iraq via Iraqi envoy in Iran.

Staff at the Iranian consulate evacuated safely before the attack in the holy city.

Local authorities imposed a curfew following the incident, state media reported.

According to local media, 47 Iraqi security staff have been injured during the attack. The Saudi-led media Al-Arabiya, activities of which is illegal in Iraq, has broadcasted the attack in a live report from its beginning which raises the probability of a pre-planned attack.

The attackers were a group wearing masks who had come from other cities to Najaf in a planned move to set the consulate ablaze, the report added.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iraqi authorities have announced curfew in the holy city of Najaf after masked assailants attacked and set fire on the Iranian consulate.

The rioters entered the compound and torched the entire consulate building late Wednesday, police and civil defense sources said.

The staff members at the Iranian consulate had been evacuated under heavy protection just before the building was set on fire, according to the Iraqi police.

According to reports, nearly 50 security forces sustained injuries during the clashes with the masked assailants.

Shortly after the incident, the Iraqi authorities declared curfew in Najaf and closed the roads linking the city with neighboring provinces.

Israeli journalist and political analyst Edy Cohen took to his Twitter account immediately after the attack on the Iranian consulate and asked his followers which one they would choose: peaceful demonstrations or subversive ones when it came to countering Iran.

So far, the majority of respondents (82%) have chosen the “peaceful” option.

Cohen had earlier in October called for an “Iraqi revolution” against what he called “the Iranian occupation”.

Back on November 3, another group of assailants had scaled the concrete barriers surrounding Iran’s Karbala consulate and spray-painted scurrilous writings on its perimeter walls.

Some other rioters also threw stones and burned tires around the Iranian consulate building, prompting Iraqi security forces to fire in the air to disperse the crowd.

In reaction to the Karbala incident, Iran urged the Baghdad government to take all necessary measures to protect Tehran’s diplomatic missions in Iraq.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Mousavi condemned the attack on the Iranian consulate building, and said the Islamic Republic “has conveyed its concerns to the host government through political channels and stressed the importance of guaranteeing the security of Iran’s diplomatic and consular missions in Iraq within the framework of international regulations and conventions.”

At the start of October, street protests erupted in several Iraqi cities over unemployment and a lack of basic services.

The rallies resumed on October 25 after a pause of about two weeks but took a violent turn. Over 150 people lost their lives in the first round, according to official figures.

Police and medics estimate that over 300 people have been killed and thousands more wounded so far during Iraq protests.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iraqi Foreign Ministry in a statement on Monday condemned a recent attack by a group of people under the guise of protest on Iran’s Consulate in Karbala.

In the statement, the Iraqi ministry underlined the fact that diplomatic missions, which have been established based on bilateral agreements in Iraq, have sanctity and their security should not be endangered, IRNA wrote.

It added that the security of foreign embassies and consulates is regarded as a red line and no aggression will be allowed against them.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry went on to say that Iraqi security systems have adopted all measures to prevent any disruption of order for diplomatic missions in Iraq.

Such behaviors will not affect friendly ties and good neighborliness between Iran and Iraq, it noted.

A number of unidentified protesters attacked the outer wall of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Consulate in Karbala on Sunday.

Iraqi security forces reacted to the attack instantly.

Iraqi security forces managed to disperse the protesters without them damaging the buildings of Iran’s Consulate in Karbala.

Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said Iran is carefully monitoring the situation in Iraq.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the Iraqi nation’s demands that are clearly affirmed by the religious authority as well as Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi,” Mousavi said.
