According to the data released by the Chinese customs administration, the trade between the two countries stood at 6.4 billion in the first five months of 2020, Tasnim news agency reported.

Iranian exports to China reached $2.5 billion in the said period, seven percent less than the figure for the same time span in 2020. Iran had exported $2.7 billion of commodities to China in January-May 2020.

Crude oil accounted for the biggest share of Iranian exports to China in 2020, according to the customs data.

The imports from the Asian country stood at $3 billion in the mentioned five months, 19 percent less than the $3.7-billion in the previous year’s same five months.

Iran’s trade balance with China was $500 million negative in the said five months.

The value of Iran-China non-oil trade stood at $18.715 billion in the past Iranian calendar year (ended on March 20), according to the spokesman of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).

Ruhollah Latifi put the weight of bilateral trade at 30.128 million tons and said that China was Iran’s first non-oil trade partner in the past year.

Iran’s export to China was 26.585 million tons worth $8.954 billion, and its imports from that country were 3.543 million tons valued at $9.761 billion in the previous year, the official announced.

Pistachios, nuts and spices, mineral and industrial raw materials, construction materials, methanol, polyethylene, carpets, glassware, iron ingots, iron products, dates, grapes, and fruits, along with petroleum products were Iran’s main exported items to China, Latifi stated.

He mentioned machinery and industrial raw materials, medical equipment, cereals, yeasts, paper, wood and boards, fabrics and yarns, auto parts, all kinds of wires, sports equipment, data processing machines, glasses, and all kinds of yeasts and seeds as Iran’s major imported items from China.

Iran and China officially signed a document for 25-year comprehensive cooperation in late March.

Under a cooperation agreement signed by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Iran’s Natural Science Foundation (INSF), the two sides will jointly fund research projects in 2021 to help scientists and knowledge exchange between the two countries.

About 15 joint research projects are planned to be supported by 2021, with maximum funding of China’s 2 million yuan per project. Exchange costs are also part of the research budget and international cooperation that the INSF provides to Iranian scientists.

According to the information published on the website of the University of Tehran, this budget will be allocated to research projects in the fields of mathematics, life sciences, and materials sciences.

Iran’s significant contribution to world’s scientific growth

The share of Iranian articles with international participation has had significant growth of 209 percent during an eight-year period (2013-2020), becoming the Islamic world’s leading country in science diplomacy, according to the Scopus International Citation Database.

The number of articles indexed by the Iranian researchers on the Web of Science website in 2020 increased by 122 percent compared to that of 2013, which made Iran 16th in the world with 69,779 articles, and first among the Islamic countries for several consecutive years, Gholam Hossein Rahimi, deputy minister of science has said.

In November 2020, scientific studies and analyses extracted from the Scopus International Citation Database showed that the rate of scientific contributions of Iranian researchers to the world increased from 17 percent in 2011 to 31 percent in 2020, becoming the world’s leading country in science diplomacy with 14 percent growth.

The development of international scientific partnerships and diplomacy is one of the main policies of Iran, which is also emphasized by the country’s higher education system, Mohammad Javad Dehghani, head of the Islamic World Science Citation Center (ISC), said.

The share of the latest joint international scientific findings in the total scientific publications of the country is one of the most important indicators of scientific participation, he added.

The meeting between Chinese Ambassador Chang Hua and members of the Iran-China parliamentary friendship group revolved around economic cooperation between Tehran and Beijing.

The Chinese envoy also welcomed the promotion of cultural interaction between the two nations considering their rich history.

The two sides called for efforts to prepare the necessary infrastructures to boost the economic and cultural ties and facilitate the bilateral relations.

In August 2019, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visited China to explore avenues for the expansion of strategic relations between the two nations in talks with senior Chinese officials.

In a meeting in Beijing, Zarif and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi discussed various issues related to bilateral relations, the latest developments in the implementation of the JCPOA, a roadmap for Iran-China ties in the next 25 years, the security of the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, and the illegal and unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on independent countries.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations announced in July 2020 that the 25-year roadmap between Tehran and Beijing for strategic partnership is nothing out of the ordinary and stems from age-old relations between the two countries.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – China Ambassador to Iran Chang Hua reiterated his country’s support for Iran against the US sanctions and said the East Asian nation is the only country that buys oil from the Islamic Republic.

The cooperation between Iran and China is under pressure from a third country and this is tantamount to interference, which is illegal under international law, Chang said at a press conference in Tehran on Wednesday.

China strongly opposes unilateral sanctions (by the US) and their impact on the cooperation of countries, the diplomat stated.

He further pointed to the US government’s maximum pressure campaign against Iran and said since May 2018, when the United States walked away from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Washington has been trying to cut Iran’s oil exports down to zero.

Despite the unprecedented pressure, China is the only country that buys Iran oil in these conditions, he said, pledging that Beijing will not change the policy in the future.

The remarks come against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since May 2018 after withdrawing from the JCPOA.

Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.

Iranian officials, however, have dismissed such moves as psychological warfare, saying the country has its own ways of circumventing the American bans.

In the press conference at the place of the Chinese embassy in Tehran, the envoy briefed reporters about the outbreak of coronavirus and answered various questions with regards to Iran and China mutual trade.

He, in particular, hailed the stance of the Islamic Republic of Iran towards the issue underlining that FM Zarif has been the first foreign minister among world countries who have announced support for China.

The Ambassador also expressed gratitude for Iranian foreign ministry’s stances and support besides other Iranian officials including Health Minister Saeed Namaki and Tourism Minister Ali-Asghar Mounesan.

The Chinese ambassador referred to the recent tweets of FM Zarif and those of Iranian foreign ministry’s spokesperson Abbas Mousavi as good examples of Iran’s support for China under the present tough conditions.

He named the stance of Iranian officials and media as “impartial and fair”.

He also thanked those Iranian people and children who have announced their support for China via their tweets or video clips on social media.

Lamenting about the US stance towards the virus outbreak in China and measures done by the Chinese government, he said, “China feels responsible for its people and does the same about all people in the world.”

“In the last days of January, WHO managing director visited China and hailed our measures in combating and curbing the virus,” Hua said, “He hailed China’s measures as an example for the world of coping with a contagious disease.”

“China is against the US abuse of the situation,” he underlined.

“The American officials have made irresponsible remarks,” he said.

He quoted Iranian health minister saying “a virus does not know borders,” adding, “I hope the one or two countries to cooperate with China facing the situation instead of abusing it.”

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior anti-narcotics official from Iran has traveled to China to explore ways of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the war on illicit drugs.

Secretary-General of Iran Anti-Narcotics Headquarters Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni arrived in China on Monday at the invitation of the Chinese Minister of Public Security.

Speaking to reporters, the Iranian general said he sought to promote cooperation between Iran and China in various fields of anti-narcotics efforts.

“The two countries share views on the war on narcotics, and such common views have prepared the ground for close cooperation,” Momeni said, adding that he would discuss various plans with the Chinese officials to share experiences in the war on illicit drugs.

During a visit to China, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani signed a memorandum of understanding on the fight against narcotics, the general said, noting that he will be pursuing efforts to implement the agreement.

“In this visit, we will strengthen cooperation between the two countries in various fields of the war on drugs, such as countering, treatment, mitigating damages, and prevention at the level of regional and international diplomacy,” Momeni stated.

In November 2019, Iran’s minister of interior and China’s ambassador to Tehran discussed plans for cooperation between the police forces of the two countries and the fight against terrorism and narcotics.

Momeni had announced in June 2019 that despite the US sanctions’ negative impact on Iran’s campaign on illicit drugs, the country captures 800 tons of narcotics each year.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past decades.

Speaking to a gathering of businesses in Tehran, the envoy insisted that reaching a $20b target in bilateral trade in eight months was a sign that Iran-China were determined to increase their economic cooperation and trade.

The ambassador, who was appointed to the post some six months ago, said he had done his best during his time in Tehran to help improve the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The comments come as China struggles to minimize the impacts of the American sanctions targeting Iran’s oil industry on the general status of trade and cooperation with Iran.

China, once the top buyer of Iran’s oil, has consistently refused US pressure to cut crude imports from Iran to zero. Beijing insists oil imports from Iran would continue despite problems affecting the transportation and insurance of oil shipments.

The ambassador said China would keep trying to save the landmark nuclear deal signed between Iran and world powers in 2015 more than a year after the US pulled out of the agreement to let it unravel.

He said the JCPOA, as the deal is known, was a historic diplomatic achievement and a result of years of negotiations that should be preserved as a model for solving international disputes.
