TEHRAN (Iran News) – Chairman of the Iran-Switzerland Chamber of Commerce believes economic growth of the country without political agreement with the world is unlikely and he welcomed the new 25-year cooperation document with China.

Speaking to ILNA, Sharif Nezam-Mafi said that it is very unlikely that if political solutions do not come to help the economy, the country can experience economic growth, adding that Iran has endured well the maximum pressure and its economy has proved as it is unbreakable even under the toughest pressures.

On the IMF’s recent forecast about Iran’s 2.5 percent GDP for the current year, he said he believes the forecast is right and if Iran can reach political agreement regarding the JCPOA and its unblocked assets are used efficiently, its GDP can even grow more than the IMF’s forecast.

He said if after the agreement Iran’s frozen funds are unblocked in the third party countries and are used efficiently in the national economy especially in reinforcing the infrastructures and production, the economic condition will get much better because the private sector has adjusted itself with the maximum pressure for continuing its activities and export-centered activities. Therefore, the private sector has learned under the maximum pressure that if the pressures are reduced, it can act more effectively, he added.

Nezam-Mafi went on to say that in recent years all economic sectors of the country have focused on exports and finding new markets, and it has made Iranian products better and they can compete with their rivals. He noted that if banking issues, instead of hindering help the economy, can help, they can help the private sector a great deal in doing their economic activities.

He also reiterated that the government should stop meddling in the economy, noting that if the past mistakes are not repeated, the country can see economic growth and blossom in one or two years, and it all depends on the government decision.

When he was asked if the political agreement does not happen whether such a growth would be possible, he said it seems unlikely, noting that if the political solutions do not help the economy, such a growth will be unlikely.

Touching upon the FATF issue in the country, he said if God willing the FATF is approved, it can help the national economy a great deal but unfortunately the FATF in the country has turned into a political stuff and when an issue is politicized, its end is unknown. He said unfortunately a simple economic issue has turned into a political conflict and this will have nothing but loss for the national economy.

Pointing to the 25-year cooperation document of Iran and Chin, he said all should take it as a very good omen and one should look at the bright side of the agreement, reiterating he does not agree with those who see the document pessimistcally.

Nezam-Mafi said that Iranians should work with Chinese companies because China has progressed in all fields and it is currently the second economy in the world and it can be the first economic power in the world in 10 to 15 years.

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior anti-narcotics official from Iran has traveled to China to explore ways of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in the war on illicit drugs.

Secretary-General of Iran Anti-Narcotics Headquarters Brigadier General Eskandar Momeni arrived in China on Monday at the invitation of the Chinese Minister of Public Security.

Speaking to reporters, the Iranian general said he sought to promote cooperation between Iran and China in various fields of anti-narcotics efforts.

“The two countries share views on the war on narcotics, and such common views have prepared the ground for close cooperation,” Momeni said, adding that he would discuss various plans with the Chinese officials to share experiences in the war on illicit drugs.

During a visit to China, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani signed a memorandum of understanding on the fight against narcotics, the general said, noting that he will be pursuing efforts to implement the agreement.

“In this visit, we will strengthen cooperation between the two countries in various fields of the war on drugs, such as countering, treatment, mitigating damages, and prevention at the level of regional and international diplomacy,” Momeni stated.

In November 2019, Iran’s minister of interior and China’s ambassador to Tehran discussed plans for cooperation between the police forces of the two countries and the fight against terrorism and narcotics.

Momeni had announced in June 2019 that despite the US sanctions’ negative impact on Iran’s campaign on illicit drugs, the country captures 800 tons of narcotics each year.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Despite high economic and human costs, the Islamic Republic has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past decades.

TEHRAN (Iran News)- Tehran and Beijing signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further increase and strengthen mutual agricultural cooperation run by Iranian and Chinese agricultural academic centers and research institutes.

Iran’s Deputy Agriculture Minister Kazem Khavazi and President of the Yanan Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Xuelin Li signed an MoU, on the sidelines of Khavazi’s visit to the Far-Eastern country.

Following the official invitation of the Chinese Academy, Khavazi paid a visit to the Academy’s facilities and laboratories to become familiar with research activities and meet with Xuelin.

In addition to signing the MoU, Khavazi held specialized committees, and reached an agreement with the Chinese side for joint research projects.

Referring to the history and antecedent of bilateral relations between Iran and China, Khavazi recalled for the development of scientific relations within the framework of the Silk Road Restoration Program.

Xuelin, meantime, described the development of the scientific relationship with the Agricultural Education Research and Promotion Organization as an opportunity for scientific enhancement.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides formally signed an MoU on joint agricultural research as they announced their readiness to expand research collaborations.

Within the framework of this MoU, the parties undertook to develop their cooperation in various fields of agricultural research.

According to the report, hybrid seed production of wheat, rice, rapeseed, vegetables, safflower, breeding and processing of tea, tropical fruits, temperate fruits and underground flowers, development of integrated pest and disease management methods are among the most important areas of joint research.

Prior to traveling to China, the delegation members drafted the Action Plan Document on Cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, with the title of Proposed Research and Executive Cooperation with China on the basis of our country’s agricultural needs and with a view to reaching a common agreement at meetings.

Iran-China is enjoying broad mutual agricultural cooperation, and the two countries even increased bilateral trade of fishery products after some food providers of china like Saudi Arabia failed to meet health standards.

Late in August, it was announced that China had banned imports of shrimp from Saudi Arabia after finding viruses in food cargos from the kingdom, and granted market access to 40 shrimp exporters from Iran.

The ban was followed by market access being granted to Iranian shrimp exporters, including Daryazad Seafood Products which is headquartered in Bushehr province, producing raw processed and value-added shrimp products.

China is the largest market for Iran which exports some 30,000 tonnes of shrimp a year, London-based global seafood news website Undercurrent News reported.

Iranian veterinary authorities said China endorsed the exporters after they met Chinese laws, regulations and standards, paving the way for direct shipments.

China’s special envoy for Middle East affairs Zhai June made the remarks in a Tuesday meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Tehran, where both sides exchanged views about issues of bilateral and regional significance and Mideast stability, Press TV reported.

During the talks, the two sides highlighted strategic ties between Tehran and Beijing.

Zarif pointed to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s new regional peace initiative, dubbed Hormuz Peace Endeavor (HOPE), and said Tehran welcomes Beijing’s positive role in ensuring regional peace and stability.

In an address to the 74th session of the General Assembly on September 25, Rouhani said that the “coalition of hope” aims to promote peace, stability, progress and prosperity of littoral states and help achieve mutual understanding and establish peaceful and friendly relations among them.

In a meeting with Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs in Beijing late in August, Zarif said disregard for international law has increased during recent years, describing this as a reason for boosting international cooperation between Iran and China.

“Inattention to international regulations and humiliation of international law has been on the rise and this is why the two countries of Iran and China, as age-old friends, need to further expand their bilateral cooperation,” Iran’s top diplomat said.

“We note relevant reports and the latest remarks on holding talks. China has been stressing all along that dialogue and consultation is the only right approach while confrontation and conflict will lead nowhere. On the Iranian nuclear issue, China always stands for deescalation through dialogue and communication. We have made great efforts towards salvaging the JCPOA,” he said in a weekly presser on August 27 as reported by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Yesterday, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif in Beijing. State Councilor Wang stated China’s support for all efforts conducive to upholding the JCPOA. He said that China understands Iran’s legitimate demands and believes that its continued fulfillment of the deal should be properly rewarded,”.

China is committed to continue working with relevant parties to uphold and implement the JCPOA to facilitate the political and diplomatic settlement of the Iranian nuclear issue and play a constructive role in reducing tensions in the Persian Gulf region, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang stated.

Addressing a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday, Geng Shuang said, “as for China’s energy cooperation with Iran and its oil imports from the country, I can tell that the normal cooperation between our two countries under the framework of international law is justified and legitimate, which should be respected and upheld.”

Referring to the US’s unilateral sanctions against Tehran and the future of Iran-China ties after the six-month waivers on the oil sanctions come to an end, the official said, “Regarding the US attitude on other countries’ cooperation with Iran, I think China’s position is clear: we have always opposed unilateral sanctions and “long-arm jurisdiction”.

The comments come concurrently with Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani’s three-day visit to China (Feb. 18-20).

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Larijani is visiting the East Asian country upon an official invitation by Li Zhanshu, chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee.

The official has held separate talks with senior Chinese officials to enhance the level of bilateral ties in political, cultural, parliamentary and scientific fields.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh, Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Farhad Dejpasand, Governor of the Central Bank of Iran Abdolnaser Hemmati, and the head of the Parliament’s Energy Committee Fereidoun Hasanvand accompany Larijani in this visit.
