Iran warns against change in international borders in Caucasus region

TEHRAN (Iran News) – A senior Iranian lawmaker has warned against any effort to change international borders in the South Caucasus region, saying Iran will not accept such a thing after border tensions soared between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The lawmaker, Mojtaba Zolnouri, who serves as the head of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said Tehran has made it clear that it will not accept any change in international borders in the region.
“The position of the Islamic Republic of Iran is very clear, unequivocal, and decisive. We do not accept any change in the borders of the region. The territorial integrity of the countries in the region must be preserved. At the same time, we do not accept the deployment of any supra-regional forces near our borders,” Zolnouri told Russian state news, Sputnik.

“Therefore, if part of the territory of Armenia is to be taken and our border conditions change, that is, to have a new neighbor, it is not acceptable for us. The existing borders must be completely protected and the shared border of the Islamic Republic of Iran with Armenia must be maintained,” he continued.

The comments came after Armenia claimed that the Azerbaijani forces have advanced into its sovereign territory in Syunik province. Azerbaijan confirmed that it had deployed troops to the borders with Armenia but said its forces did not enter Armenian territories.

Zolnouri said Iran backs the territorial integrity of both Azerbaijan and Armenia. “We support the position of Azerbaijan in preserving the territorial integrity of this country and the position of Armenia in preserving the territorial integrity, territory and neighborliness with Iran. We are neighbors of both countries and based on the conditions we had in the past, both countries are viewed as our neighbors, and by maintaining this neighborliness without accepting any change in the region, we support the territorial integrity of both countries,” the lawmaker noted.

Zolnouri also accused Israel of trying to “create dispute among the region’s countries and muddy the waters in order to fish in the troubled waters.”
Israel is doing so to later intervene in the region, he said.

The lawmaker said terrorist Takfiri groups are being organized in the vicinity of Iran’s borders with help from Israel and some countries in the region, and this issue is very sensitive in the view of Iran and it won’t let it happen.

“Any insecurity on our borders will be severely responded to and there is no way for foreigners to enter this area,” he said.

Iran Not to Tolerate Insecurity at Its Borders: Interior Minister

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s Interior Minister said the country will not tolerate insecurity at its borders and give stronger warnings if any mortar attack on borders of country is continued following the conflict erupted between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh.

“Some bullets and mortars hit parts of our country in the wake of conflict and we asked them (Azerbaijan and Armenia) to control it, otherwise, the country will give stronger warnings to the warring sides,” Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said according to Mehr News Agency (MNA).

Speaking to reported on Monday, Rahmani Fazli said, “We advised neighboring countries of Azerbaijan and Armenia that we will not tolerate any insecurity, interference or any action that would harm security of our people in those areas and we hope that this issue will be resolved by observing current laws and implementation of international laws that respect national sovereignty and rights of countries.”

He stressed, “In view of the Ministry of Interior, the internal security of the country, ranging from borders to all parts of the country, is a high priority and each of our border areas is part of our national security so that Armed Forces and Law Enforcement Forces (Police) monitor the security of border areas precisely.”

Elsewhere in his remarks, he appreciated residents of the northern border areas of the country and emphasized, “We take this opportunity to thank our intimate people in northern border areas of the country especially Azeri-speaking provinces for their cooperation and collaboration in strengthening and maintaining the security of the country as well as dealing with the issue logically.”

On Monday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the Islamic Republic Iran, closely monitors the transit of goods via its borders and it never allows weapons and ammunition to be transferred through the Iranian soil.

He also said Iran has drawn up a plan for the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Khatibzadeh said during a weekly press conference the proposal is based on “respecting the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and withdrawal of military forces from the occupied cities.”

IRGC, Police Plan to Enhance Border Security in SE Iran

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Senior commanders from the Iranian Border Police and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) weighed plans to enhance interaction in ensuring security along the country’s southeastern border.

In a meeting in the province of Sistan and Balouchestan, IRGC Ground Force Commander Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour and Border Police Commander General Ahmad Ali Goodarzi stressed the need for close coordination between their forces to ensure sustainable security in the border areas.

Highlighting the Border Police’s operations against drug traffickers, armed outlaws, and terrorist groups in the large province, General Goodarzi said any source of insecurity along the southeastern border would be tackled harshly.

General Pakpour said security prevails across the southeastern border regions, adding that closer cooperation between the IRGC and the Border Police would assure the local residents of security and frighten hostile and terrorist groups in those areas.

The Iranian Police and security forces have been quite successful in ensuring security in the large province Sistan and Balouchestan despite its long borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan, harsh weather and vast desert areas.

Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe.

Two Iranian border guards martyred

TEHRAN (Iran News) – Two Iranian Border Police guards were martyred on Friday in an armed clash with gunmen in an outlying border region in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

According to the public relations office of Iran’s Border Police, the exchange of fire occurred in Jakigour region, bordering Pakistan, some 450 kilometers south of the provincial capital, Zahedan, and near the borders

Major Sargent Ahmad Rahmani-Fard and Private Ahmad Tavakoli were the two Iranian border police guards martyred in the battle.

Armed clashes along with the border areas of Sistan and Baluchestan, which neighbors Pakistan, are not rare.

The Iranian Police are often engaged in battles against drug-traffickers and outlaws in the region.
