TEHRAN (Iran News) – Iran’s blood transfusion measures are admirable and influential in the region, Mikoko Senga, the deputy representative of the World Health Organization in Iran, has said.

“I was impressed by the infrastructure and facilities of the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO),” she further stated.

Referring to her work experience in different countries in the region, she considered Iran to be an influential country in the field of health and hygiene, and in particular, praised the actions of the IBTO.

In August 2021, the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization was selected for the third time as a partner center of the WHO.

Iran’s advanced blood transfusion provides a suitable and needed environment for further cooperation, she noted.

A 13 percent increase in blood donation in the first three months of the current [Iranian calendar] year (started March 21, 2022), compared to the same period last year has brought the donation rate to 27 per thousand people, Mostafa Jamali, CEO of IBTO said.

He also considered planning to expand blood donation in rural areas as one of the long-term goals of his administration and requested Senga to support the blood transfusion organization in order to achieve the goal of creating facilities in deprived areas.

Senga also emphasized that the representative office of the World Health Organization in Iran is ready to support the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization in providing the necessary equipment.

In August 2021, the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization and the High Institute for Research and Education in Transfusion Medicine were selected for the third time as partner centers of the WHO.

Highest blood donation in Eastern Mediterranean

Blood donation in Iran has long been done voluntarily as over 2.1 million Iranians donate blood annually, Bashir Haji-Beigi, the Blood Transfusion Organization spokesman, said on June 14.

There are currently 178 blood donation centers in the country, with Fars, Khorasan Razavi, Khuzestan, Tehran, and Mazandaran provinces having the largest number of blood donation centers, he stated.

While blood donation in 70 countries still depends on replacement or paid donors, Iran is the first country in the region that has enjoyed voluntary blood donation by 100 percent since 2007.

More than 85 percent of all donated blood worldwide is used to produce blood products, while the rate is 65 percent in Eastern Mediterranean countries. Iran ranks among the highest-income countries in terms of converting more than 97 percent of the blood donated by people to plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMP).

Iran currently has the highest blood donation rate in the Eastern Mediterranean region so out of 9.9 million blood donation units in this region, more than two million belongs to Iran.

Also, the index of blood donation is 27 per 1,000 populations, while in the member states of the Eastern Mediterranean region, this number is 14.9 per 1000.

With the successful and complete implementation of the activities of the second period of the WHO Cooperative Center in the field of blood health education and research, the Blood Transfusion Organization and the High Institute for Research and Education in Transfusion Medicine were selected as partner centers from September 2021 to September 2025.

During the third period of membership, the two partner centers cooperate with the WHO by holding a workshop on centralization and management of blood transfusion centers, a workshop on optimal use of plasma for refining, and conducting two research projects on blood donor management and assessing the health and adequacy of blood in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Moreover, they will help implement the World Health Organization strategies on blood health and adequacy in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Also, the first membership period was from 2013-2017 and the second membership period started from 2017 to 2021.

During these courses, the partner centers succeeded in holding seven training workshops and an international seminar and conducting a research project to review the status and trends of 10 years of health and blood adequacy in the region.

Tehran, the Biggest Blood Consumer City of Iran

IRAN NEWS NATIONAL DESK

TEHRAN – The spokesman of Iran Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) says more than 2 million units of blood and blood products are donated in the country per annum, adding that AB Negative blood group is the rarest blood group in the country and Tehran is the biggest blood consumer city of the country.

Speaking to ISNA, Dr. Bashir Hajibeigi said that last year, over 2.5 million people went to the blood transfusion centers in the country to donate blood, adding that some 2.1m people could donate their blood and some 490, 000 people were found ineligible for donation.

On the amount of blood needed in the country, he said some 920 hospitals in the country receive blood and blood products from IBTO offices and in metropolis Tehran, Tehran’s IBTO office meets the demands of some 170 hospitals and medical centers.

He added that some 3,000 units of blood and its products are requested in Tehran per day, reiterating that Tehran Province has the most blood donators and blood consumers in the country.

Hajibeigi added that consumption of blood in Sistan and Baluchistan, Fars, Gilan, Fars, Mazandaran, Bushehr, Khouzestan and Kerman provinces is higher because of the huge number of Thalassemia patients.

He further said that the organization acts based on the demands and needs of blood banks of hospitals, adding that whatever hospitals request, IBTO provides them with blood and blood products. He admitted sometimes because of huge demand for blood products like platelets, IBTO faces shortage in supply but it is mostly temporary.

Hajibeigi noted that over 2m units of blood per annum were collected by the organization and most of it is turned into the blood products. He said over 3.5m units of blood products are produced from over 2m units of blood and the amount has met the demands of medical centers of the country so far.

He added that when the demands from the medical centers for blood rises, the IBTO starts its propagation and culturalization of blood donation, and consequently the amount of blood donation rises.

He reiterated that O Positive is the dominating blood group in the country with 33 percent while 25 to 26 percent of people have B positive, 27 to 28 percent A Positive, 8 to 9 percent AB Positive and only 10 percent of people have negative blood groups.

He further said that AB Negative is the rarest blood group in Iran and only one percent of people have AB Negative blood group.

He said O Positive is dominating blood group in the country and its donation and consumption is higher than other blood groups.

Hajibeigi noted that blood donation has increased in Iran in recent years as the figure reached 60 percent last year.
